Specification of Letters Patent. lPatented Feb. 29, 1916.
Application sied :ruiy 2, 1915. serial n. 37,679.
'To aZZ whom it may concern Be itvkiiown that I, HARRY BAsEviTz, a citizen of the nited States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State 'of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Burglar-Alarm, of which the tollowing is a full, clear, and exact descrip- -I A tion.
- thorized 'person is trying to force a closurev Myinvention relates to burglar alarms, andthe object thereof is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and eflicient alarm which is adapted to fire a cartridge when an unauprotected byathe said alarm.
' lVitli the above fand other objects iii View, the nature oi-swhich will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel Construction, combinar. tion and ariangeinent'of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
`In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in 'all p the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the lower portion of a door closure provided with an ein- `bodimeiit of iny'invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the alarm; Fig. 3 isa similar view from the opposite side; and Fig. t is an elevation from the inner side ot the alarm. y, Referring -to the drawings, 5 represents the frame or casing which is formed of a. blank, the edges of which are raised to form vthe casing. One ofthe' sides or edges of the casing 5 has a socketl 6 adjacent one corner which forms a cartridge holder. On the same side ad]acent the other corner, a poi'- y tion 'of the casing is folded over to form a U-portion 1' (see Fig. in which portion a transverse slot 8 is formed, as best seen in Fig. 4. A hammer9 has one end thereof pivotally connected to the casing. The other end is adapted to swing to and from the socket 6. The socket and U-portion being in alinenient, the swinging end of the `hammer passes through the U-portion 7 when moving toward the side of the casing i'emote from the socket The casing 5 is provided with suitable apertures 1+i whereby Vthe same can'be secured to or 'at the closure to be protected by the alarm. The latch l1 is provided with a flexible member 15', such as a chain, which chain carries a securing member 16 whereby the chain Imay be attached. As shown in Fig. 1, the chain is attached to a door 17 and the alarm is attached to the door jamb. llvlien the hammer is set in` the position shown in Figs. l and 4, the socket 6 can be engaged by a cartridge 18; and if an unau-v thorized entrance. is effected, the latch 1l will be-,forced out of the slot 8 permitting the springr 10 to swing the hammer against the cartridge`l thus firing the same and giving the alarm` i lVhileI have described the principle of operation.. together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is-meiely illustrative4 and that such changes may be made-as are within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A burglar alarm of the class described comprising,-a casing, a socket on one side of 'the casing adjacent the corner thereof and forming a cartridge holder, said casing having a Ushaped portion at the saine side adjacent the other corner in alinenient with the socket,l a hammer mounted to swing in the casing to and from the socket and adapted to pass into the U-shaped portion, a spring -for moving the hammer toward the socket, ca pin extending from the said hamnier through the casing whereby the same can v be moved from the socket and whereby the spring is placed under tension, a latch detachably associated with the U-shaped portion and adapted' to engage the hammer whereby the spring is maintained under tension, and means associated with the latch whereby the saine can be removed from the U-sliaped portion, thus permitting the spring to move the hammer toward the socket.
Iii testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
