usefulImprovementsin Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of thefinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which. it ,appertains to makeanduse the This invention relates to new and useful improvements in latches and has for its principal object to provide a device which is particularly adapted {for use on cupboard doors a-nd similar places where it is necessary to have a simple andefiicient latch.
A further object of the invention is to provide a latch which may be entirelycon-- structed of sheet metal and which will be particularly effective and simple in use.
Still another object of the inventionis to provide a latch which not only can show the retaining of the door but will also act as a pull to enable the user to eliminate the use of a knob or similar attachment.
A still further object, of the invention is to provide a latch having a minimum number of operating parts thereby reducing friction andiprovidi'ng a device which may be manufactured at a minimum amount of expense.

The latch member hereinbefore referred to is designated byithe numeral 15 and com prises the body 16 having formed near one end a suitable rivet receiving aperture through which the rivet 17 is arranged to extend; This rivet-17 is so arranged that it extends also through'one of the apertures 8 in the base plate-l and thus pivotally secures the latch-member- 15 to the base plate.
Formed centrally of the longitudinal axis of the body 16 is the rectangular aperture 18 which is so positioned as to lie at a point substantially centrally of the base plate when the device is in its normal locked position.
Pivotally secured to ears 7 hereinbefore referred to is the latch controlling and operating member designated generally by the numeral 19 which comprises the ring or finger hold 20 which is formed with a suitable radial projection 21 this radial projection 21 is provided at its opposite terminal with a pair of spaced cars 22 which ears are spaced from each other a suitable distance to enable the ears 7 hereinbefore referred to, to lie therebetween. These ears 22 and 7 are pivotally secured to each other by means of the pivot pin 23 as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Extending between the cars 22 near the pin 28 is a suitable pivot pin 24: which is so arranged as to pivotally secure the latch operating member 25 in operative position with relation to the member 19 hereinbefore referred to. This latch operating member comprises the plate 26 which is formed at its lower terminal with the angular extension 27 this extension is arranged to project into the aperture 18 in the latch 15 and it will thus be seen that a positive connection between the latch member and the latch controlling mechanism is provided. The ears 22 hereinbefore referred to are provided with a suitable cover 28 which is arranged to engage the ears 7 when the device is hanging in position illustrated in Fig. 5 and thereby limit the outward movement of the member 19. It will thus be seen that a pull is provided which will automatically operate the latch and thus release the door to permit the same to be swung open.
A suitable keeper designated generally by the numeral 29 is provided and this keeper comprises the base plate 30 which is formed at each end with a suitable aperture 31 through which the screws for securing the device are arranged to extend. This plate is formed intermediate its ends with the extension 32 the free terminal of which is provided with an angular upstanding portion behind which the latch member is arranged to engage and thereby hold the door in its closed position.
It will be apparent from the foregoing, that in use the device is assembled as illustrated in Fig. 1 and the base plate 1 secured to the door upon which the device is to be used by screws or any other suitable fastening means. lVhen it is desired to open the door it will be evident that by pulling outwardly on the ring 20 the latch will be lifted from engagement with the keeper 29 through the action of the member 26 and upon further pull on the ring 20 it will be evident that the cover plate 28 of the cars 22 will engage the ears 7 thereby forming a stop for the ring and eliminating the upward movement thereof which will permit the user to use the ring as a knob or pull to enable the door to be easily and quickly opened. As soon as the pull is released from the ring 20 it will be evident that the latch member will return to its normal downward position through the weight of the ring and thus provide a gravity latch which will effectively hold a door in its closed position.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that there has been provided a simple and efiicient latch which may be easily and cheaply constructed of sheet metal and assembled at a minimum amount of expense. It will also be evident that the device may be secured to any suitable article and will effectively hold the same closed to prevent accidental opening thereof.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that such changes in the combination and arrangement of parts as may fall within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is l. A latch including a casing, a latch member pivotally secured within the easing, the free end of the latch member projecting beyond one of the lateral extremities of the casing said latch member be ing provided with a rectangular aperture near its pivoted end, a latch controlling member pivoted within the casing near the upper end thereof a link pivotally secured to the latch controlling member and eccentric with relation to the pivot point of the latch controlling member and an angular projection at the free terminal of the link, said angular projection being arranged to extend into the rectangular aperture in the latch member whereby upon movement of the latch controlling member the latch member will move.
