Be it known that'I, ALFONSO ALVAREZ, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan,.c ity, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Blades for Safety-Razors, of which the following is Reference is tobe had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 1s a horizontal section of a safety razor with my improved blade in position thereon; Fig.2 is a plan view of the blade with the blade sections opened out; Fig. 3 is an edge view thereof;-F1g. 4 is a face view of another form of blade; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blade showing a different form of recess.
In the drawings 10 represents the usual shank which carries the back plate 11 and is arranged to be detachably connected with the handle to secure the blade in position. The back plate 11 is provided with the customary studs 12 for preventing any lateral movement of the blade. In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the blade comprises .two sections 13 and 14 pivotally secured together at one end as indicated at 15. The ends of each section 13 and 14 adjacent to the pivot 15 are preferably thinned down so as to secure a flush connection, the heads of the pivot 15 being also preferably made flush with the opposite surfaces of the sections 13 and 14. The free ends of each section 13 and 14 are adapted to overlap when the blade is in position in the holder and are hook shaped as indicated at 16 so as to extend partly around the one stud 12 and thus prevent the blade sections from accidentally spreading or opening apart. Each blade section is further formed at its inner edge with a recess 17 adapted to partly surround the other stud 12anda further central recess 18 arranged to partly surround the shank 10, as clearly shown in Fig.- 1. y 1
When it is desiredto hone or strop the blade the same is removed from its support and opened up as indicated'in Fig. 2.- In,
this condition the cutting edges of the two sections are in alinement and form a substantia'lly continuous cutting edge which is easily honed or stropped in the same manner as an ordinary razor, it being understood of 1 course thatithe blade in its open condition is secured or clamped in a holder of suitable construction. If desired the said .blade in its open or unfolded condition and while itis in this position in the holder may be used as an ordinary razor. When it is desired to again use the blade as a safety razor it is first folded as indicated in Fig.1 andthen again clamped in position on the studs 12 and the usual safety razor handle.
The form of blade shown in Fig. 4 differs from the one just described in that theblado sections 13 and. 14 overlap at two intermediate points as 19 and 20. With this construction the blade sections extend far ther around the studs 12 and shank 10 and are more firmly held against spreading when in operative osition onthe holderl' In both 0 my structures the blade sections are easily unfolded to present a relatively long cutting-edge which is easy to strop' and hone without necessitating the use of .a complex and expensive stropping machine.
