To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOSEF HENRIKsoN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Burntranch, county of Trinity, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double -Action Force-Pumps, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to double action force pumps.
The present invention has for its object the provision of a force pump of simple, inexpensive, durable, and light construction having a novel arrangement of inlet and check valves and operating means whose cylinder or barrel is combined and arranged with its other parts in such manner thatit may be readily placed in a bucket or other vessel or reservoir, or in a well for convenient operation.
The invention contemplates the provision of a force pump which will be easy to operate and will be so constructed that a very large volume of water can be readily raised.
The invention is set forth fully hereinafter and its novel features are recited in the appended claim.
1n the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical section; Fig. 2, a horizontal section on line 2 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a cross section on line 3 3, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, a detail of the cylinder head at the left hand end of thepump barrel.
The pump being preferably constructed out of sheet metal, is provided with a preferably square barrel 1 having its sides and bottom formed of one piece of sheet metal and its ends 2 and 3 of sheet metal and provided with anges 4 fitted in between the sides and secured thereto by suitable bolts or rods 5. Clamped in between the sides is the top 6 which the ends 2 and 3 overlap. Below the top is the upper wall 7 of the barrel 1. This is provided with flanges 8 which are riveted or otherwise secured at 9 to the sides and they are provided with ports 1() and 11 by which the fluid has ac cess to the space between the parts 6 and 7. This space or valve chest is provided with filler or spacer members 12 which are so formed that the effective valve chest space is largest at its ends and constricted toward its center as shown at 13, thus the better directing the water or other iuid to the ports 14 and 15 in the outlet 16. Two of the walls of the outlet 16 are of pieces of upright sheet metal which rise from and are connected to the upper walls 7 of the barrel 1, the other walls 18 being upward extensions of the top 6. Surrounding the walls 17 and 18 is the nozzle or pipe coupling 19. Any suitable pipe can be connected to this coupling to lead the water to any desired point. Secured to the walls 7 and disposed between the walls 17 is a step bearing plate 2O in a transverse groove 21 of which is pivoted at 22 ametallic valve 23 adapted to move in one direction or the other in the outlet 16. The sides 17 at-their upper ends terminate in upwardly converging edges 24 which constitute rests for the check valves 25 which are pivoted at 26, said valves when closed as shown in Fig. 1, resting upon the said inclined or converging edges 25, being adapted to spread or be thrown apart by the pressure of t-he water so that they will assume a vertical position, being limited in their outward swinging, or separating movement, by the walls 18. These check valves prevent the water which has been pumped into the nozzle 19 from passing back into the pump and the oscillating valve 23 moving one way or the other according to the direction from which the pressure is received from the pump barrel 1. The pivots of the valves 25 serve as an abutment for the free end of the valve 23. Pivoted on rods 27 are the check valves 28 and 29 disposed over the ports 10 and 11.
In the end 2 are water admission openings 30 and this end has a cross-piece or bearing member 31, provided with an aperture 32 serving as a guide for the piston or plunger rod 33 of the piston or plunger 34 which plays in the barrel 1. A suitable clamp 35 surrounds the nozzle 19 and has an eXtension to which is pivoted at 37 an operating lever 38 in turn pivoted to the rod 33. This lever may be of any desired length and made in sections, so that it can be so disposed as to be readily operated even if the pump is placed at any appreciable depth in a well or the like.
Pivoted on a rod 40 is a valve 41 which has a slot 42 through which the piston rod 33 loosely passes, said slot permitting the valve to open suiiiciently to admit the iuid through the openings 3() to the barrel 1. No packing is required as the valve, which is of flat sheet metal, and closes ilat against the end 2 and the slot 42 is closed by the bridge or cross-piece 31 When the suction is at the other end of the barrel. The end 3 has an opening 43 for the admission of the fluid and a flat metallic valve 44 pivoted on a rod 45 closes this opening when the suction is from the other end and opens When suction is at its own end.
In operation, the lever 88 is reciprocated, causing the piston to play back and forth in the barrel, and the fluid is alternately admitted through the opposite ends of the barrel and forced through the ports 10 and l1, opening the check valves 28 and 29 in alternation and alternately shifting the oscillating valve 23 to one position or the other. The valves 24 and 25 alternately open and close and, While permitting the fluid to be forced into the nozzle, check its return to the barrel.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a force pump, the combination With sheet met-al sides and bottom, of sheet metal ends having flanges, connections between the flanges on the ends and the sides, a top having flanges connected to the sides, a supplemental top connected to the sides and spaced or separated from the lirst-named top, thereby providing a valve chest, a piston, and admission and cheek valves.
