Be it known that I, ELIJAH NEFF, a citizen ofthe United States, residing` at Rochester, in the county of Fulton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in pumps for windmills; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed outv in the Claims.
The accompanying drawing is a vertical seetional view ofa pump embodying my improve'- ments.
A represents a vertical pumpbarrel, which is suspended from and has its upper end coniinunicat-ing` with the lower end of a vertical tube, B. The said tube is connected to a baseplate, O, that is supported on the platform D.
E represents a vertical tube, which is arranged parallel with the tube B and at a slight distance therefrom, and the said tube Eis also connected to the base-plate C. The upper end of the tube E is closed by a cap, F, having an arm, G, that extends to and is connected to the upper portion of the tube B.
H represents a compressiouchamber through which the tubes B and E extend. The tube E has a series of perforations, I, which coininunicate with the lower end of the compres sion-chamber II, and the said tube is also provided with a stop-cock or faucet, K.
L represents a cap which closes the upper end oi' the tube I5.
' M represents a link which has its lower end pivoted to one side of the cap F. r:lhe upper end of this link is connected to a lever, N, which `has a counterpoised weight, O, at its short end. To the said lever N is connected the upper end of a piston-rod, l?, and to the lower end of the said r-od is secured a piston, It, that works in the pump-barrel A when the lever N is operated.
The lower ends of the cylinder A and of the pipe E are connected together by a U-shaped coupling-pipe, S. To the lower side of the said coupling-pipe is attached the upper end of a suction pipe, T, which extends down into 5o the well or other source of water. In the upper end ofthe suction-pipe is a valve-ease, U,
in which is located an upwardly opening valve, V.
I represents a similar valve arranged in the upper end of the coupling-pipe S at the lower end of the tube E.
X represents a pipe which is connected to and communicates with the lower end oi" the pipe E. The outer end of the pipe X is uptnrnedaud arranged verticalland is provided at its upper end with a faucet or stop-cock, Y, having a goose-neck, Z.
A represents a vertical pipe which extends from the upper side of the pipe X. The upvper end of the said pipe A is provided with a discharge'nozzle, B, controlled by a stop cock, G.

On the upper end of this cylin- .der is secured a casing, F', arranged below the 75 stop cocks or faucets K and Y, so as to receive the water discharged from the said faueels.
' To the lower side of the pipe X, and comn municating with the Same between the pipes 8o A and E, is secured a depending cylinder, G', the lower end of which is closed.
I-l" represents a piston adapted to reciprocate in the said cylinder, and from the lower side ofthe said piston extends a piston-rod, I', 85 which passes through an opening in the closed end of the cylinder, and is connected to a ver tieally-movable yoke or guide-frame, A". To the upper end of the latter is connected the lower end of the rope or rod Il', that is con- 9o. nected to a weighted lever or vane, a, such as are commonly employed to throw a windmill into and out ofthe wind. The weight on the lever or vane normally keeps the wind-wheel in operation and the yoke K elevated, so as to elevate the piston H in the cylinder G.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The lever N is operated by connecting the same to the operating rod or pitman of an ordinary windmill. Vhen the piston R rises in the cylinder A, the valve W closes and the valve V opens, a partial vacuum is formed in the lower end of the cylinder A and in the suction-pipe l?, and water is drawn upwardly through the latter into the lower end of the cylinder. On the downstroke of the piston the water in the cylinder is forced upward past the valve W' into the pipes K and E. Continued operation ofthe pu mp-piston causes water to flow from the pipe E into the compression-chamber H and ll the same, and to liow from the pipe X into thepipe A' and into the compression-cylimler D to lill the latter. Continued operation ofthe pump`piston causes the pressure of water in the pipe Xto become so great that it forces the piston H' downward in the cylinder G', therebydrawingdownward on the guide yoke or loop K', and causing the latter to draw downward upon the rod L', and thereby throw the wind-wheel out of gear and cause it to cease to operate.
When the stop K is opened, water is discharged from the pipe E into the basin, thus relieving the pressure in the compressionchambers H and D', and after a quantity of the water has been drawn into the basin the pressure on the piston H' will become so slight that the counterbalanced lever will cause said piston to rise in the cylinder G', and thereby again start the windmill and the pump in operation.
rlhe chambers H and D' serve to store a quantity of water under pressure and make it accessible at all times by simply opening either. or both of the faucets K and Y. Vhen the stop-cock C' is opened, the water compressed in the chamber D' will be forced upwardly through the pipe A' and through the nozzle G' in a `iet and form a fountain. When the pump is in operation. and either or both of the stop-cocks K and Y are opened, water will flow therefrom into the basin in a continuous stream.

The combination of the compressionchamber H, having the cock K, the pipe B, extending down through the compressionchamber, the cylinder A, attached to the lower end of said pipe, thepipe E, extending through the chamber H, communicating therewith at 4I, and also communicating with thelower end of cylinder A, and having tlieclieclvalve\V, the inlet-pipe having valve V, the cap F, secured on the projecting upper-*ends of pipes B andFi, the piston R in cylinder A, and having rod P extending upward through pipe B, the link M, attached to cap F, andthe handle lever attached at different points to the upper end of link M and the upper end of rod P, substantially as described.
