PUMP.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Fatented Dec. 18, 1906.
Application led May 13,1905. Serial No. 260.276.
To @ZZ rui/1,0m, t Wawy concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY NAGEL and JOHN E. NAGEL, citizens of the United States, and residents of Brunswick, in the county of Antelope and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Pump, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to pumps of -that kind in which a vacuum-chamber below the piston and a compressed-air chamber above the piston serve to prolong both the iniiow of water into the suction-tube of the pump and the outflow from the pump-barrel.
Our improvement consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the pumpcasing with its pressure and vacuum chambers and the piston and valves, as hereinafter fully described with reference to the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of our pump shown in a well, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged view showing a modification of the pumpbarrel.
ln Fig. 1 of the drawings we have illustrated a well 10, into which extends a delivery-pipe 11, leading to a pump-casing A, supported in the well. rlhe pump comprises upper and lower cylinders 12 and 13, respectively, these being of the same diameter and connected by a coupling 14 and having at their outer extremities upper and lower heads 15 and 16. Into the center of head 15 is threaded the end of the delivery-pipe 11, while from the head 16 depends a suctionpipe 17. The lower cylinder 13 has across its upper extremity a head 18, in which is an opening having depending from it a tubular member 19, forming the working barrel. ln this barrel operates a piston 20, the rod 21 of which is shown as extending upwardly through the cylinder 12 and delivery-pipe to a pump-head 22, which may be of any desired form. The piston carries the usual upwardly-opening check-valve 23, and at the lower end of the member 19 is a perforated plug 24, furnishing a seat for an upwardlyopening check-valve 25. This last-named check-valve has depending from it rods 26, provided with right-angular ends 27, which extend beyond the edge of the opening through the plug to retain the valve against upward displacement. Between the cylinder 13 and the member 19, which are concentric with one another, is an annular space forming a vacuum-chamber 28. The cylinder 12 has at its upper end beneath the head 15 a head 29, providedwith an opening in alinement with that of the head 18 and from which depends a tubular member 30. This is concentric to the wall of the chamber, and the space between them forms an air-chamber 31. I r
`The water in the well being at its normal level, an upward movement of the piston simultaneously draws the air from the chamber 28, producing a partial vacuum, and lifts the water through the suction-pipe. Upon the downward movement of the piston the check-valve 25 retains within the barrel what water has entered, while that within the suction-pipe and vacuum-chamber is retained by external pressure. rl`he water passing through the check-valve of the piston flows into both the member and the air-chamber 31, compressing the air in the latter. The water that thus accumulates in the vacuum and air chambers furnishes an auxiliary supply, which causes a steady flow when the well does not supply suiiicient water to Ell the barrel to the lifting capacity of the piston. The harder the suction on the entry-point of the water'the greater theefhciency of the apparatus, this result being attained without increase in the power applied.
ln the form illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings a pump-cylinder 34 takes the place of coupling 14 in Fig. 1 and has upper and lower end sections 32 and 33, respectively, of equal diameter connected by screw-couplings 35 35. The outer extremities of the end sections are closed by heads 36 36. The intermediate section furnishes the working barrel for a piston 37, this having a rod and checkvalve, as has been previously described. From a head 38, at the upper end of the section 33, surrounding an opening there, extends a tubular member 38a, having coperating with its upper end an upwardly-opening check-valve 39 and forming with the cylinder-seotion a vacuum-chamber 40. The upper sectionhas a head 4 1 similarly provided with a pendent tubular member 42, furnishing between it and the section 32 an airchamber 43. In this instance the principle of operation is the same as that of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.
In both forms of our invention there are three alined coaxial cylinders of the same diameter, the cylinders 12 13 and coupling 14 in Fig. 1 and the cylinders 32, 33, and 34 in IOO IIO
Fig. 2, all detachably connected by screwthreads in such a way as to make a simple and practical pump of the kind described.
We claim 1. A pump comprising a suction-pipe and delivery-pipe arranged coaXially and an intermediate casing between the suction-pipe and delivery-pipe and of larger diameter than said pipes and consisting. of upper and lower cylinder-heads and intermediate cylindrical sections, both the u per and lower sec tions being provided witii pendent concentric tubes forming a compression air-chamber and vacuum-chamber, respectively, a check-valve arranged in the lower section, and a piston with upwardly-opening valve arranged to work at an intermediate point between the upper and lower sections and having a piston-rod extending centrally up through the delivery-pipe.
2. A pump comprising a pump-head with hand-lever, a delivery-pipe extending from the pump-head down into the well, a suction-pipe and a casing intermediate to the suction and delivery pipe and of larger diameter than said pipes and consisting of upper and lower cy inder-heads and intermediate cylindrical sections, both the upper and lower cylindrical sections being provided with pendent and concentric tubes forming a compression air-chamber and vacuumchamber res ectively, a check-valve arranged in the ower section and a piston with upwardly-opening valve arranged to work at an intermediate point between the upper and lower sections and having a pistonrod eX- tending centrally up through the deliverypipe and pump-head and attached to the hand-lever.
3. A pump comprising a suction-pipe and deliverypipe arranged coaxially and an intermediate casing between the suction-pipe and delivery-pipe of larger diameter than said pipe and consisting of upper and lower cylinder-heads and intermediate cylindrical sections, both the upper and lower sections being provided with pendent and concentric tubes forming a compression air-chamber and vacuum-chamber respectively, the lower pendent tube being provided with an upwardly-opening valve at its bottom and a piston iitting in said tube and having an upwardly-opening valve and a piston-rod eX- tending up through the delivery-pipe.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
