CORSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH ANN JENYNS, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Brisbane, in the State of Queensland, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in corsets, and has for. its object to provide a corset in combination with an abdominal support, which will obviate the wearing of two separate articles, where cases of enlarged liver, floating kidney, inguinal or umbilical hernia, prolapsus and strainedy loins demand such abdominal supports. Furthermore the invention contemplates an abdominal support in combination with corsets which will give the front of the abdomen a more regular contour or shape by reducing or suppressing any superfluous full` ness in front without injury to the organs.
'The invention is so constructed that pressure may be applied to any lower portion of the abdomen. This is attained by the use of three separate and distinct lacings in the back, an insertion of elastic webbing along the full length of each side, a belt attachment fastened to the lower back lacing adapted to buckle on to an adjustable, detachable, abdominal support buttoned on to the front of the corset and a pad sewn to the inside of the corset at any particular spot to cover any swelling that may occur from any of the aforementioned complaints.
l/Vith this obj ect in view my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
I will now refer to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification in which like letters in the several views designate like parts.
Figure l is a perspective view of the corset; Fig. 2 is a back view of the corset, showing the lacings and portions of the belt; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the corset; Fig. Ll is an inside view of the parts shown in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a front view of the detachable abdominal support.
A represents the front portion of the corset and B the back portion. Short lengths of elastic web, a, a or other suitable material, see Fig. l, extend from the front to the back portions of the corset, and are stitched to these parts to form the sides of the corset.
C is a detachable abdominal su port which buttons on to the double row o diagonally arranged buttons cl and d on the front of the corset by the button holes 0 and c on said abdominal support. The diagonal arrangement of the plurality of rows of buttons on the lower front portion of the corset possesses the advantage of being able not only to adjust the abdominal support directly up and down as heretofore proposed, but also to adjust it sidewise, and in a number of diagonal positions, so that an' even pressure may be applied to any given portion of the lower abdomen and the comfort of the wearer increased. D and D', see Fig. 5, represent buckles stitched to lappets carried by said abdominal support C, as shown.
E, E, Fig. 2, represent portions of a belt with the lacings F stitched to one end which portions are adapted at their other ends to be secured to the buckles D and D carried by the detachable abdominal support, the said lacings F, F, portions E, E and support C constituting a complete belt. The other ends of lacings F are fastened to the back of the corset.
H represents a top lacing, and G a middle lacing employed to adjust the corset above the lacings F.
J represents hooks for fastening the front ends of the corset, K a loose wash leather back, M a pad to be sewn to any desirable spot, and N Suspenders for the stockings.
In using the invention the back lacings are tightened or slackened according to requirements and the detachable abdominal support buttoned without the belt on to the front of said corset in the position best suited to the existing circumstances and to the location of the pad M if it is used. For instance, if it is desired to reduce the fullness in front, the detachable abdominal support is fastened to the top buttons, whereas if it is desired to support the lower portion of the abdomen, as frequently occurs in various cases, then it is attached to the lower buttons. While if the pad M does not register over a given spot the desired diagonal adjustment may be found so as to produce a pressure at that point found most comfortable for the wearer. In all cases if considerable upward pressure is desired the detachable abdominal support is buckled to the belt, givingit an upward or lifting pressure, and
thus affords the same support as a separate abdominal support.
The pad is sewn on the inside of the corsets in the position best adapted to relieve the particular complaint requiring such attention.
What I claim is :h

In a corset the combinat-ion of a plurality of independent lacings arranged one above the other; a double lacing located below said irst mentioned lacing; portions of a 'belt secured fto the ends of said double lacing; `a detachable abdominal support provided with button holes, and With buckles to Which said beltportions are adapted to be secured; and a ydouble row of diagonally arranged buttons carried by the lower front portion of said corset over which said button holes are adapted to fit, substantially as described.
