Speciiication of Letters Patent Patented May 2, 1911.
Application `led. January 2 1, 1910. 'Serial No. 539,264.
lTo all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS G. JUSTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chi-` ".\cago, in the county of Cook and State of :v 5f foldable mattress-frame'carried thereby are Illinois, have invented certain Improve- 1 ment-s in Sofa-Beds, of which the following rotatable within the soi'a-franie; whereby either the seat or the folded mattress frame may be brought uppermost, in one or the first instance providing an ordinary form of sofa or davenport and in the other or latter instance .permitting the mattress-frame to be extended for the'use fof the device as a bed.
The primary objectof my present inven- .i ion is t0 `provide a sofa-bed structure of this general character with a peculiar form of locking device, by which the rotatable sofa seat is securely locked in position when the arts are arranged in-bed form, said vlocking device being yso constructed and arranged that it will beoperated automatically by the operation of folding and unfolding the mattress-frame, the latter being provided with a catch for holding it folded upon the sofaseat. i
A -further object of the invention is to provide'a peculiar form of connection between the seat and sofa-frame, whereby the seat is rotatable and shiftable laterally withiu the frame and is provided with two spaced-apart points of suspension when arranged in sofa form.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and what I claim as new in the art will be specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification: Figure l is a side or endelcvation of a sofa-bed constructed in accordance with my invention, the parts being arranged in sofa form and the near end of the sofa frame removed. Ifigs. 2, 3 and 4 are views illustrating the operation of' converting the device fromV sofa to 'bed form. Fig. 5 is 'an end View, with the parts-"arranged to provide ached.
Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of the `means' for locking the sofa seat in horizontalposi- =trunnion 8 and the tion when the parts are arranged in bed form. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the catch employed for locking the parts of the mattress frame in folded position'. Figs. 9, 10 and 1l' illustrate a modification of the means for locking the sofa seat in horizontal position.
Like numerals of reference `indicate like parts in all thc'ligures' of the drawings.
` In carrying out my invention I provide 1n the first place-a sofa or davenport frame 4comprising a back l, and ends 2, 2, and in connection therewith employ the usuai form of sofa-seat 3 having a box-like base 4, at
,the forward end of which is attached a board 5, forming the front rail of the sofa. The sofa-frame may be of any conventional design, and said frame, as well as the seat, may be suitably upholstered, if desired.
In carrying out my invention the s eat is rotatable and movable laterally within the frame, for which purpose I provide at each end of the seat a pair of'connecting plates 6 and 7,' the plate 6 in-the present instance being attached to the seat, and the plate 7 :attached to an'end 2 of the sofa-frame. The
l1. -ne end of this slot 'is offset, as. at 11a,-
so'that when the seat is in position to form a sofa the headed pins engaging in the pliV sets will prevent the seat from tilting; and
in this position of the seat it will have two separate points `of: suspension; to wit, the
Attached to the ulijderside of the rotatable sofa-seat, and movable'therewith, is a mattress-frame comprising three sections, the opposite end sections 12 andl, and the short intermediate section 14, said sections being pivotally connected to each other so that they may be--folded as shown, and sup ported in connection with the sofa-seat by means of the section 12, which is attached to said seat at one end by means 'of the short standards l5, and at the other end byjstraps' 16. The sections of the mattress .frame are preferably made up of angle-iron, and provided-with the usual spring-wire mattress (not shown), upon which is mounted the ordinary felt mattress, as 17.
The mattress-frame is foldable under the seat and in the rear of the board or front. rail 5, and in order to hold said mattressframe folded during the rotatable movement of the seat and while the device is used as a bed the outer section 13 of said mattress-frame is provided centrally .with a catch 1S adapted to engage a keeper 1Sa attached to the outer edge of the front rail.
For the purpose of supporting the outer section 413 of the mattress-frame in extended osition when the device is arranged in bed orm, I provide a supporting-leg 19, which is pivoted to said outer section and tothe projecting inner end of which is connected an operating link 20, the other end of said link being pivotally connected materially to the intermediate section 14 of the mattressframe, whereby said leg will be swung alongside' the section 13 when the mattress-frame is folded, and will be opened out or swung to a supporting vertical positionwhen the mattress-frame section 13 'is extended for use of the device asa bed.
F or the purpose of locking the sofa seat in a reversed horizontal position when the parts are arranged in bed form I provide each stationary connecting-plate 7 with a hole 21, with which is adapted to register a similar hole Q2 on the companion connecting-plate 6 attached to the sofa seat, and for each pair of connecting-plates provide a sliding-bolt 23 attached to the sofa-seat and adapted to engage said holes, so asto locl: the connecting- plates 6 and 7 together and thereby prevent rotary movement of the plate 6 and sofa seat to which it isattached.
By reference to Fig. 5 it will be seen that when the sofa seat 1s reversed for use of the device as a bed theF trunnion 8 bears in the slot 9 at the forward end ofthe plate 7, and as the sliding-bolt engages in the rear ends of the pla-tes said sofa seat is supported at two points separated from each other laterally. The sliding-bolt 23 is operated by a lever 24, pivoted, as at 25, to the board or-front rail 5 of the sofa-seat, said lever being connected to the bolt through the 'intervention of a slide-bar 2G and lever 27, the
latter being pivoted at itsouter end to 'a' bracket 2S on the sofa seat and connected at an intermediate pointdirectly to the bolt by means of a pin engaging a slot 29 in said lever. A'spring 30 is attached at one end to the slide-bar 26 and at the other end to a metal strap 31 attached to the sofa-seat, and this spring is adapted to normally project the bolt into engagement with the registering bolt-holes in the connecting-plates 6 Iand 7.
The upper portion of the operating-lever 24: is curved to one side so that it may be depressed for retracting the bolt against the action of the spring, and the end of the lever is bent later ally, as at 24, so as to be engaged for depression by the outer end of the mattress-frame` section 13 when the latter is folded; thus providing for the auto.
matie operation of' thel locking device by the operation of folding and unfolding the mattress-frame.
As will'be noted', the lateral movement of the sofa-seat `imparted-by the connectingplates. (5 and 7, is for the purpose of locating therear end of the seat against the lower lend of the upholstered portion ofthe back,
when the device is arrangedas a sofa, and to locate the board or frontrail 5 a short distance-in front.' of the upholstered back when the device is arranged in bed form,
and Ain this latter instance said board or front rail forms a side piece forvthe bed` to protect the upholstered back.
The operation of the device Will be readily` 'understood from the foregoing description the parts are arranged in sofa form the ,mat-' andin the rear of the front rail, the device then-having the appearance of an Ordinar sofa or davenport, and when it isdesired v for use as a.- bed it is only necessary to reverse the sofaseat to bring'the folded mattress-frame uppermost, after which the catch 18 is disengaged permitting the movable sections of said mattress-frame to be extended, the leg 19 being moved automatically to support the outer portion 'of the mattress frame, and the lever 24 being also automatically operated to lock the connecting- plates 6 and 7 to firmly support the sofa-seat and inner portion of the'inattre'ssframe in horizontal position.
In the modification, shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11 the bolts, as 32, are located directly in the rear of the board or front-rail. 5, and engage keepers 33 on the upper edge of each 1n lconnection with the drawings, for when .29T- tress-frame will be hidden under thejts'eatj end piece 2 of the sofa-frame, said bolts being operated in the present instance by means of a slide 34C carrying arms 35, which latter are connected vto rods 36 extending from the bolts. The bolts 32 are of the ordi-- nary spring-actuated type, so that they will be normally projected, as shown in Fig. 11, and in order to retract the bolts when the slide 34 is operated by the mattress-frame section 13 the connecting-arms 35 engage in inclined slots 37, as illustrated in Fig. 1Q. It will be seen, therefore, that in the modlcation the bolts engage independent keepers instead of the connecting plates, and that the construction of devices for operatlng said bolts is slightly diiferent from that shown in the othen'gures of the drawings, thou h similarly operated by folding and unfolding the mattress-frame` I claim as new7 and desire to secure by Let-l ters-Patent, 4is
