AT TORNEY 3,525,106 PULLOUT SOFA BEDS Albert Perry, Glendale, N.Y., assignor to Super Sagless pring Corp., Bayonne, NJ., a corporation of New S York Filed Sept. 6, 1968, Ser. No. 757,817 Int. Cl. A47c 17/14, 17/22 U.S. Cl. 5--13 20 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This sofa bed is of the four-section type on which people sleep lengthwise in the bed with the head or Afeet at the sofa frame. The bed has toggle linkage so a1'- ranged that when the bed is in tilted position, it may be moved to fully collapsed position with not too much push with the hand, and yet the gentle push translates to a very significant compression force on the mattress and a locking of the fully folded 'bed frame.
BACKGROUND OF THB INVENTION Field of the invention This invention relates to collapsible loose pillow back or fixed pillow back sofa beds of the four section type which is collapsible into Ia sofa frame to hold and com.- press a mattress which is folded within the collapse of the bed, and which bed may be extended so that the four sections are in horizontal coplanar position.
Description of the prior art This invention constitutes an improvement on Pat. No. 3,281,870 granted Nov. 1, 1966. Said prior p-atent shows a collapsible pullout bed of the same general type but doesnt show a toggle mechanism for locking the leg sections in the fully collapsed position of the bed, to permit compression of the mattress with a relatively light manual push on the bed from tilted to fully collapsed position.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION An object of this invention is to provide a pullout bed construction of the character described in which a gentle push on the bed from tilted position to fully collapsed position translates to a very significant compression force on the mattress and at the same time locking the leg section of thebed, so that the leg section cannot move relative to the intermediate section until the bed is first moved from fully collapsed position to tilted position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a rugged and durable sofa bed of the character described which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, comfortable to use, and which shall yet be practicable and efiicient to a high degree.
`Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

A stop member or locating bracket 111 is xed to the bed section 66 to contact the cross-member 34 where the bed is in fully collapsed position.
OPERATION On unfolding or setting up the bed B, the mechanism passes through the positions of FIGS. l, 2, 3, and 4. During the rst phase of the opening cycle, as the bed B is moved from the FIG. l to the FIG. 2 position, main drive lever 21 rotates in a clockwise direction of its pivot pin 19, being aided in this motion by the pull of spring 25. Such action causes moving pivot link 17 to rotate in a clockwise direction about pivot pin 16. As this iS happening, rear throwout link 37 is rotating in a counterclockwise direction about the moving pivot 36, thereby, acting through the links 48 and 39, moving the still folded front and rear intermediate bed sections upwardly and forwardly so that said sections and the rear leg 68 will clear the front board 12.
In the second phase of the opening cycle, the bed B goes from the FIG. 2 to the FIG. 3 position. Main drive lever 21 continues to rotate clockwise and the rear throwout link 37 continues to rotate counterclockwise. However, this continued motion causes only a relatively small amount of continued motion of the pivot link 17. The continued motion of lever 21 and link 37, acting through control link 50, bell crank 53 and rear operating link 65 causes rear leg 68 to pivot in a counterclockwise direction about common pivot 67, to put the rear leg into its unfolded supporting position shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 contacting the floor. As shown in FIG. 3, the front intermediate bed section 66 is substantially in vertical position and the front or leg section 104 is substantially in horizontal position.
In FIG. 3, the pin 64 is at the upper end of the slot 78. The pin 76 is at the left end of the slot 74. The pin 84 is at the left end of the slot 73 and the pin 82 is at the left end of the slot 72. The link 79 is inclined upwardly to the right. Link 210 is inclined upwardly to the left and the link 204 is at an angle to the link 210. The pin 206 is at the lower end of the slot 205. In the position of FIG. 3, the leg section 104 could be raised and the bed section 66 can swing in a clockwise direction about the pin 67. From the position of FIG. 3, the bed can be extended to the fully extended position of FIG. 4. The mattress which lies flat on the bed frame becomes folded When the bed frame is collapsed.
In collapsing the bed, as the bed is moved from the position of FIG. 3 to the position of FIG. 2 (which is the tilted position), the link 204 moves closer to a position alongside of link 210. As the bed is collapsed from the tilted position of FIG. 2, to fully collapsed position of FIG. l, link 204 moves into a position alongside of the link 210. Since the pin 206 of the link 79 is at the lower end of the slot 205 in the fully collapsed position anism. Because of this mechanism a light push of the bedframe from tilted position of FIG. 2 to a fully collapsed position of FIG. 1, translates to a significant compression force on the mattress.
In the fully extended position of the bed as shown in FIG. 4, the'link 79 being in horizontal position and connected to the pivot pin 80 of section 66, is prevented from moving to the left. Since it is pivoted by pin 76 to the link 81 from moving to the left. Link 81 being connected to the pin 82 retains saidpin against moving to the left. The link 63 carries the pin 81 which is at the left end of the slot 73' and being connected to the head or rear section 43 by pin 64, serves to hold said section in horizontal position. The rear section furthermore has an abutment with the rear intermediate section 44 to hold said rear section in horizontal position.
It will thus be seen that there is provided an article in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and'which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use. l
As possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matterl herein set forth is'to be interpreted as illustrative-only.
