Be it known that I, Sivnn'r GUNDERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofa-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates particularly to such structures as sofa-beds, in which the back is employed as a means for locking the seat in closed position. The primary object is to provide an improved device of this character, which operates in an improved manner.

The invention is illustrated in the yaccompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a view of the improved structure in open position, with one end of the frame removed; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the structure in closed position, with a portion of the frame shown brokenly; Fig. 3, a. broken rear elevational view; Fig. 4, a perspective view of a latchdevice employed; and Fig. 5, a perspective view of a locking-stud employed.

In the constructionillustrated, A represents a frame; B, a forwardly invertible seat; C, a folding-bed normally housed in the frame below the seat; and D, a movablymounted back for the structure.

The frame may be of any suitable construction. As shown, it comprises endstandards l which afford arms for the sofa; and an open-topped box 2 rigidly secured to the lower portions of the end-standards.

In the illustration given, the seat is connected, by links 3, to brackets 4 secured to the front corners of the box 2, the seat being adapted to swing forwardly from a position in which it surmounts the box 2 to an inverted position in front of the main frame.

In the form illustrated, the folding-bed C comprises a rear section 5 an intermediate or spacing-section 6, and a front section 7, the intermediate section being pivotally mounted on brackets or hangers 8 applied to the corners of the seat-frame. The sections 5 and 7 are pivotally connected with the intermediate section 6. The rear section 5 is connected by elbow levers 9 with the brackets 4; and the members 9 are joined by links 10 to the brackets 8. The section 7 is connected by links 11 to the swinging edgeportion of the seat B, and the seat B is equipped with legs 12 operated by links 13. The yrear portion of the bed-section 5 is connected, by heavy coil-springs 14, to standards 15 with which the rear corners of the box 2 are equipped. The folding-bed structure, and the manner of connecting the same and the seat to the main-frame are known in the art.

I/Vhen the structure is in the folded condition shown in Fig. 2, the springs 14 tend to throw the seat open and aid in unfolding the bed-structure. The back D normally locks the seat against opening. The back D is supported on pivots 16 carried by corner standards 17 which may constitute a part of the end standards 1. These pivots are preferably located slightly below the center line of the back. Light coil-springs 18 connect the lower portion of the back to the corner standards 17 and tend to throw the lower portion of the back forward to the seatlocking position shown in Fig. 2. Clips 19 applied to the upper portions of the members 17 limit the rearward swing of the upper portion of the back. Clips 20 applied to the member 17 limit the rearward swing vof the lower portion of the back. 'I he back is equipped at its ends with downwardlyextending arms 21, upon which are pivotally mounted the latch-members 22, which have locking notches 22a adapted to engage the studs 23 which are secured to the inner sides of the members 17. The studs 28 have attaching bases 23a, through which screws pass to secure the studs to the members 17. The latch members 22 are provided at their front ends with extensions 22b adapted to be engaged by arms 24 secured to the rear corners of the seat-frame, referring to the structure in the folded condition shown in Fig. 2.

When it is desired to convert the structure from sofa-form to bed-form, the upper portion of the back is drawn forward, thereby moving the ylatch members 22 to the latching position shown in Fig. 1, whereby the back will be restrained or held in the nonunderstood that the seat may portion of the hack forward, so that the hach will lock the seat in closed position, in the manner shown in Fig. 2.

The latching-mechanism for holding the bach in non-,locking position is preferably duplicated at the two ends f the bach.

In a structure ofthe character set forth, the combination of a frame, a seat, means tending to turn said seat to open position, a haelt movahly mounted on said frame and adapted'to loch said seat in closed position, latch mechanism acting automatically to hold the hach against movement when said back is moved away from said seat, and means on said seat adapted to coact with said latch mechanism to render the latch mechanism inoperative when said seat is turned to closed position.

A structure of the character set forth, comprising the combination of the frame, a seat, means tending to turn the seat to open position, a bach movahly mounted on said frame and adapted to lock said seat in closed position, means acting' automatically to move the bach to the position for locking the seat, automatic means including latch mechanism for holding the back against movement When said hack is moved away from saidseat, and means on said seat adaptedto coact with Copies o this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing said latch mechanism to render the latch mechanism inoperative when said seat is tnrnedto closed position.
