(Cl. 5-42) This invention relates to sofa beds, and particularly to a love seat type bed divan composed of three sections which pull out to make a full size bed.

While bed divans of two and three section type have been employed heretofore in the art, the present type of love seat bed divan embodies substantial improvements over the type heretofore manufactured and sold in the trade.

The main objects of the invention are: to provide a bed divan of the three section type having all of the units interconnected to be moved into bed position by the actuation of one of the units; to provide a bed divan of the three section type employing the simplest type of hinge structure for uniting the three sections in unit relation to each other; to provide stop means on the hinges of the sections to limit the movement thereof into seating and bed positions; to provide a link hinge for supporting the back section of a three section bed divan which lowers the back section to the depth of the two superimposed seating sections so as to project only a minimum amount above the top portion thereof; to project the lower edge of the back section forwardly and the rear edge of the seating section rearwardly when the sections are in seating position to produce a maximum area when in bed position while eliminating any space between the sections when in seating and bed positions; and, in general, to provide a three section bed divan which is simple in construction, positive in operation and economical of manufacture.

Other objects and features of novelty of the invention will be specifically pointed out or will become apparent when referring, for a better understanding of the invention, .the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to Figs. 1 to 7, the bed divan therein illustrated comprises a box frame 19 having a pair of arms 21 secured thereto to form the main support for the assembly. A back section 20, a forward seating section 23, and an intermediate section 22 are hinged to each other and to the box frame 19 so as to be movable from seating to bed position, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4 respectively. The back section 20 has a base frame 24 on which coil springs are mounted in the usual manner and thereafter padded and upholstered to form the back section. In Figs. 2 and 3 it will be noted that the lower end of the back section is extended at 25 soy as to have the end wall thereof disposed substantially parallel to the top of the box frame 19 when in seating position and to overhang the base frame 24 when in bed position. Similarly, the forward seating section 23 has a base frame 26 upon which springs are supported, padded and upholstered to produce the seating section. The rear edge of the forward seating section 23 is extended at 27 to overhang the edge of the frame Z6 so as to eliminate a gap when in seating position with the back section 20. The intermediate section 22 similarly is built upon a base frame 28 upon which the coil springs are supported, padded and upholstered in the usual manner.

The back section 20 is supported on a pair of link hinges 31 having a flanged plate 32 which is attachable to the box frame 19 and a flanged plate 33 which is attached to the frame 24 of the back section. A pair of

34 and 35, of predetermined relative length, is pivoted to the respective plates 32 and 33 in such relation as to have the back section 20 disposed at the proper' angle when in seating position, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and to have the back section disposed horizontally when in bed position, as illustrated in Fig. 4. A tab 36 is illustrated as being struck from the plate 32 in position to be engaged by the link 35 when the back section is in seating position to position and support the back section. A pair of spring pressed plungers 37 is mounted board of the box frame 19 to be in position to engage the frame 24 of the back section 2h when in seating position to eliminate the shock which would occur when the back drops into seating position and to assist in the swinging of the back to bed position. Preferably one of the units 37 is provided at each side of the bed divan .for balancing the force applied thereto.

Each of the side members 38 of the box frame 19 is provided with a slot 39 in which the top ange of the plate 32 projects for locating the plate on the box frame in which the flange is adjusted between the front and rear members of the box frame. Suitable screws 41 retain the plate in adjusted position. The flange of the plates 33 is secured to the frame 24 of the back section 20 by suitable screws 42.

The angle element 46 provides lever arms of proper' length to produce the necessary degree of tension in the spring 47 for aiding in the swinging of the forward seating section 23 from seating to bed position.

The intermediate section 22 is joined to the forward seating section 23 by a jackknife hinge 51, one leaf 52 of the hinge Si having a hanged edge which engages the frame 23 of the intermediate section 22 to which it is secured by suitable screws 53. A similar leaf 54 has its ange attached to the frame 25 of the intermediate section 22 by suitable screws 53. 22 and 23 are in horizontal alignment with each other in bed position. The abutment of the flanges 57 is illustrated in the enlarged view of Fig. 7.

The leaf 54 has a leg 58 welded thereto in right-angle relation to the frame 26 of the forward seating section 23 so as to have the end thereof engage the floor when in bed and seating positions. Further support is provided by the leg 59 which is pivoted to a plate 61 secured to the frame 26 of the forward seating section 23. The leg is joined by a rod 62 to the hinge 51 in a manner to have the leg moved into the position illustrated in Fig. 2 when the seat sections are disposed in seating position.

A strip of fabric 63 extends from the back lower edge of the back section to which it is secured by tacks or other meansI across the top of the intermediate section 22 when in bed position, downwardly over the forward end thereof, and secured to the frame 2S by suitable means, as by tacking. The strip of fabric 63 moves the bottom edge of the back section 24 forwardly when the front and intermediate sections are swung out to bed position, thereby moving the back section to bed position all by the single manipulation of the forward seating section 23. The forward seating section 23 is provided with a finish strip 65 along its front end in position to rest upon the front board 66 of the box frame 19 when the divan is in `seating position, as illustrated in Fig. 2.

The finish strip 65 is grasped near the center when the forward seating section 23 is to be raised, which is permitted by the notch 67 formed in the board 66, and the forward seating section 23 is pulled forwardly to swing the intermediate section 22 on the swivel hinge 43 as the jackknife hinge Near the end of this the intermediate section 22 and pulls the lower edge of the back section 20 forwardly and aligns the section with the

22 and 23 in bed position. It wiil be noted that the projecting edges and 27 of the sections 2t) and 23, respectively, are disposed adjacent to the edge of the intermediate section 22 in bed position to eliminate any gap therebetween. It will be noted also when in bed position that the back section 20 rests upon the backboard of the box frame 19 and is supported at the sides on the

34 and 35 and atthe front edge by the fabric strip 63. The intermediate section 22 has its rear edge resting upon the swivel hinge 43, with its forward edge retained in position by the flanges S7 disposed in abutted relation on the jackknife hinges 51. The jacltknife hinges are directly supported by the leg 5S and the forward seating section 23 as further supported by the pair of legs 59, one disposed on each side of the section. It is to be understood that the structure recited above for the one side of the divan sections is also employed on the opposite side thereof.

When the sections are to be moved from bed position to seating position, the tinish strip 65 on the section 23 is again grasped to raise the two

22 and 23` upwardly, after which the forward edge of the forward seating section 23 is dropped to cause the hinge 51 to fold, which occurs as theintermediate section 22 swings aoout the swivel hinge against the forward edge 2S of the back section 20. When this occurs, the back section 2d swings on the

The upper end of the back section 2t) has wing portions 68 and the arms 21 have a recess 69 'on their inner surface at the rear edge thereof. The wing extensions 68 move within the recesses 69 when moved to and from seating position and mateV with the arms and cover the recess portions 69 thereof when in seating position` Referring to Figs. 8 and 9, a further form of the invention is illustrated, that wherein a strap 7i, attached to the jackknife hinge 5f, is utilized in place of thc fixed leg 58. An angle bracket '72, welded to the leaf 32 of the link hinge 31, has an outwardly extending flange 73 /hich is engaged 'oy a flange 74 on the end of the strap 7l, as illustrated more clearly in Fig. 9. When the forward seating section 23 is in seating position, the flange 74 rests on the flange 73 and provides support for the section at each side of the divan.

In Figs. l0 and l1, a further form of support is illustrated, 'that wherein a strap 75 lis welded directly to the link 35 to have the upper end disposed in position to engage the end of the rod 62 when the sections are in seating position. k

In Figs. l2 and 13, a further form of support is illustrated, that wherein a strap 76 is welded to a leaf of the jackknife hinge 51 and extends rearwardly in position to engage a block 77 on the link 35, as illustrated in the hgures, When in seating position, the end of the strap 76 contacts the top 0f the block 77 and thereby provides support for the rear end of Vthe seat section. The end '78 of the strap is bent outwardly to provide a cam surface which cams the strap outwardly when the end engages the adjacent edge of the link 35.

ln Fig. 14, a further form of the invention is illus-- trated, that wherein the box frame 19 has a plurality of metal straps 79 extending across the bottom from the front to the rear thereof. The top of the intermediate section 22 rests upon the straps and thereby provides support for the pad and upholstering material which prevents them from sagging from the supporting springs when in inverted position.

lt will thus be seen that a bed divan has been provided having a comfortable seating area which rests against a back section which extends down the full depth of the two seating sections so as to provide a low appearance. Wings are provided on the back section to extend beyond the inner spacing of the arms which are recessed at the rear to receive the wings. The wings provide an appearance of solid construction to the back section, the same as in the built-up type of divan. Spring operated bumpers are also provided at the rear of the box frame against which the back section strikes as it swings to seating position and which is available to assist initially A strip of fabric is preferably attached to the intermediate section and to the rear edge of the back section in such manner as to pull the .ack section from seating to bed position when the intermediate cushion is moved to bed position. The hardware employed for pivoting the three sections is simple in construction, requiring no locks or latches, which results in a rugged assembly which is always operative. The sections are retained in abutting relation by providing overhanging edges on the bottom of the back section and at the top of the rear edge of the front section.

What is claimed is:

1. A bed divan comprising when in bed position a box frame having arms at each end thereof, a back section, a forward seating section, an intermediate section, link hinges connecting the sides of the back section to the sides of the box frame, swivel hinges connecting the sides of the intermediate section to the sides of the box frame, hinges connecting the intermediate section to the forward seating section, and a fabric strip connecting the rear portion of the intermediate section to the lower portion of the back section when in seating position to cause the latter to move to bed position when the intermediate section is moved to bed position with said fabric strip extending across the top surface thereof.

2. A bed divan comprising when in bed position a box frame having arms at each end thereof, a back section, a forward seating section, an inttermediate section, link hinges connecting the sides of the back section to the sides of the box frames, swivel hinges connecting the sides of the intermediate section to the sides of the box frame, jackknife hinges connecting the intermediate section to the forward seating section, spring supporting arms extending forwardly from the swivel hinges and secured to the forward edge of the intermediate section when the sections are in seating position, and springs connecting the end of each of the last said arms to the sides of the box frame to assist the forward swinging of the intermediate section and to cushion the movement of the intermediate section when moved to seating position.

3. A bed divan comprising a box frame having arms at each end thereof, a back section, a forward seating section, an intermediate section, link hinges connecting the sides of the back section to the sides of the box frame,

swivel hinges connecting the sides of the intermediate section to the sides of the box frame, jackknife hinges connecting the intermediate section to the forward seating section, and wing extensions provided upon the back section above the arms on each side thereof, said arms at the rear being recessed to receive said wing extensions when the back section is moved to bed position.

4. A bed divan comprising a base frame having thereon a back section, an intermediate section, and a forward seating section, means for supporting the back section on said base frame for movement from bed position to back rest position, means supporting said intermediate section for arcuate swinging movement through substantially hinge means securing the forward seating section to the forward edge of the intermediate section when the sections are in bed position, and a fabric strip secured to the forward edge of the intermediate section when in bed position and extended over the top of said intermediate section and secured to the forward portion of the back section.
