To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, "WARREN T. HANLnY and JOHN H. LnAuY, Jr., citizens of the United States, residing at Creede, in the county of Mineral and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful lVork- Holder for Sewing-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improvement in work holders, and although the same may be attached to any support, it is preferably attached to a sewing machine.

The primary object of the invention is to provide an attachment for holding a number of useful articles, such as pins, needles, buttons, cotton, etc.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device which is adapted to swing horizontally so that the same may be moved to or from a person, as desired.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described in which a novel construction of tliimble supporting and thread guiding means is employed.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is composed of several parts which may be quickly assembled or taken apart.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described, which is composed of a minimum number of parts and is therefore simple in construction, and is cheap to manufacture.

With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacriicing any of the advantages of the invention.

Fig. t is a perspective view of one form of the combined spool holder and thread guide, and Fig. 5 is a persoective view of the supporting bracket.

Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.

Referring to the drawings, the invention comprises a bracket 5, preferably formed of a flat metallic plate, and'provided with a plurality of openings 6-45, formed at the opposite ends thereof, and other openings intermediate thereof and designated as 7 and 8 respectively, the last-mentioned openings being spaced apart a suitable distance for the purpose hereinafter described, and the lower one 8 thereof being preferably larger in diameter than the former.

Projections 9 and 10 each have one end engaged within the respective openings 7 and 8 of the plate and project forwardly from. said plate. A bearing pin 11 is secured to the outer ends of the said projections 9 and 10 in any suitable manner, although the same preferably has threaded engagement with the lower arm 10. Journaled on this bearing pin 11 to swing horizontally is a supporting arm 12, the bearing end thereof being preferably enlarged to form a ball bearing 13.

The free end of the arm 12 is bent at right-angles to form a vertical standard 13, the free end 14 thereof being preferably screw threaded and adapted to engage the lower half of a receptacle 15, which receptacle is preferably hollow and semi-spherical in shape. Secured to this receptacle 15 by a hinge 16 of any suitable construction is a pin-cushion 17, the contour of which completes a sphere.

' Collars l8 and 19 are arranged 011 the vertical standard 13 of the supporting arm and are spaced apart and secured by a thumb screw or other suitable means 20 and 21 respectively.

The invention further comprises plates 22 and 28. Each of these plates is preferably formed of sheet metal and is circular in outline, one of the said plates being of less diameter than the other. These plates are provided with openings 24: and 25 respectively at their center. The supporting standard 13 projects through these said openings, and the plates are respectively supported by the collars 18 and 19, the openings being of a sutlicient size to permit of the rotating of the plates. Formed in each plate and near the periphery thereof is a plurality of spaced circular openings 26. V

A combined bearing for spools and a guide for the thread is formed by bending a single piece of metal rod into a substantially U shaped formation, one of the legs 27 thereof being driven through one of the openings 26 of the plate, and the other leg 28 extending upwardly beyond the periph ery thereof.

Each opening 26 is of a diameter a trifle less than the diameter of the leg 27, and as the said leg 27 is driven therethrough, it will be held in tight engagement with the said plate. The leg 28 is preferably shorter than the leg 27 and is provided with an elongated slot 29, through which the thread for the spool is guided.

A catch 80, of any suitable construction is carried by the receptacle for preventing relative movement of the same and the cushion.

=From the foregoing, it will be observed that the various parts can be quickly and easily assembled, and when assembled, the arm' 12 can be swung to or from a person with ease.

hat we claim is In a work-holder, a support, an arm con nected to the support to swing horizontally, a plate supported on said arm, and a combined spool bearing and thread-guide carried by the plate, said bearing and guide being formed of a single piece of metal rod and bent into a substantially U-shaped formation, one of the legs thereof constituting the spool-bearing penetrating the plate, while the other leg is provided with an elongated slot to form a thread-guide, said legs including a horizontally connected part disposed below the plate and frictionally against the bottom thereof, said leg having the slot being disposed frictionally against the marginal edge of the plate to hold the bearingand guide in place.
