SPOOL-HOLDER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMAN GOODMAN, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool-Holders for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to spool holders for sewing machines, and has for its principal object to provide a simple and inexpensive device for supporting a spool of thread in a horizontal position transversely of the arm of a sewing machine.

Another object of the invention is to provide a spool holder, which is adjustable for supporting spools of difierent lengths in such a manner that the transverse center of the spool will be in alinement with the needle of the sewing machine.

With the above and other objects in view as will be readily understood, the invention will be hereinafter fully described as illus trated in the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be distinctly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings like characters of reference designate corresponding parts.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a spool holder made in accordance with my invention,

Fig. 4 is a side elevation of Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a plate having a circular head 2 and a similar but smaller lower end 3. Fixed in the head 2 and extending at a right angle therefrom is a pin 4, for rotatably supporting a spool of thread, indicated by 5. Any suitable means, as for instance a cotter pin 6 may be employed for retaining the spool upon the pin. The plate 1 is supported from the arm of the sewing machine by a rod 7, which is fixed in its lower end 3 and extends from the same side of the plate as the pin 4:. This rod is bent downwardly at a point central of the spool 5 to form a leg 8 for fitting into the usual hole provided in the top of the sewing machine arm. The leg 8 fits tightly enough into said hole to prevent rotation therein but will allow removal therefrom.

In the modification, the headed pin 9 is adjustably supported in the plate 10, as is also the rod 11, and set screws 12 and 13, mounted in the bosses l l and 15 respectively, are adapted to hold the pin and rod in set positions. By thus making the pin and rod adjustable, the pins may be adjusted to ac commodate spools of different lengths, and the rod may be adjusted to bring its leg 16 central of the spool.

From the above, it is obvious that, this spool holder will support a spool of thread in a horizontal position and transversely of the sewing machine arm, in such a manner that, the center of the spool will be in alinement with the sewing machine needle.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A spool holder for supporting a spool of thread transversely of the arm of a sewing machine, comprising a vertical plate, a horizontal pin carried by the plate for supporting a spool of thread, a horizontal rod supporting thcplate and being on the same side thereof as the pin, the rod having a vertical leg for fitting tightly into a holeof a sewingmachine arm whereby the leg will not rotate therein but is removable therefrom, and the leg being arranged in alinement with the transverse center of said pin, substantially as described.

2. A spool holder for supporting a spool of thread transversely of the arm of a sewing machine, comprising a plate, a pin for supporting a spool of thread, the pin being longitudinally adjustable in the plate, a rod longitudinally adjustable in the plate, and the rod having a leg arranged at a right angle thereto, substantially as described.

3. A spool holder for supporting a spool of thread transversely of the arm of a sewing machine, comprising a vertical plate, the plate having a pair of bosses, a pin for supporting a, spool of thread, the pin being slidably mounted in one of said bosses, a rod slid-ably mounted in the other of said bosses, the rod being bent at 21, right angle to form a vertical leg, and set screws in said bosses for fixing said pin and rod in set position, substantially as described.
