PACKAGE AND TOY.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK GARDNER, a citizen of tlie United States, residing at Oak Park, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages and Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a package or receptacle which is especially adapted to be used for vending popcorn, confections, or the like, and to combine with such a receptacle a ball and string or cord in such a manner as to provide a toy or amusement device. Its objects are to provide a package of the character set forth, with means adapted to coact therewith to provide a toy or amusement device preferably when the contents have been removed from the package.

My improved package and toy is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in

which- Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the package with the contents therein; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; and Fig. 3 illustrates the package after the contents have been removed, and indicates the method in which it is used as a toy.

As indicated in these drawings, i represents a box or casing, preferably of cylindrical form, having one end provided with a cap or closure 5, preferably intended to form a permanent closure for said end, and having the opposite end provided with a removable cover 6. The end 5 has a hole 7 therethrough covered by a thin piece of paper or fabric 8. At a point indicated at 9, preferably adjacent to the end of the package to be opened, I attach a string or cord 10 having a ball or the like 11 secured to the end thereof. The string or cord 10 is preferably of considerable length, say about two or three feet, in order to secure the best results. When the package is to be filled, the contents thereof may be placed in a separate envelop or casing as indicated at 12 and placed in the receptacle, then the ball and string are crowded in and the cover 6 placed in position. When the purchaser opens the package and has removed the contents, he then punches in the light paper Specification of Letters Patent.

One way of operating the toy, in order to derive amusement therefrom, is to grasp the package in the hand, and by a sharp upward movement the ball is thrown above the package, and the person using the same attempts to catch the ball in the hole 7 in the top of the package. If desired, the sides of the hole may be slightly beveled so as to conform with the shape of the ball when it rests therein. It will be found that this is an amusing trick requiring considerable skill and is designed to furnish much amusement to the purchasers of the package. Another way in which the device may be used is to extend the cord or string 10 upwardly through the hole 7 and then, with the ball resting on the end of the box or package, giving it a rapid rotary motion. This will produce a humming or buzzing sound; or by vibrating the box or package laterally, a rattling noise may be produced.

Having thus described my invention, which'I do not wish to limit to the exact construction or arrangement of parts as shown herein, except as specified in the appended claims, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A package and toy comprising a receptacle for holding goods or wares having a hole in one end thereof, a string secured to said receptacle, and a ball at the end of the string.

2. A combined package and toy comprising a receptacle for holding popcorn, confections or the like having an opening through one end thereof, a string secured to the opposite end of said receptacle, and a ball on the end of said string, said ball being of larger diameter than the opening through the end.

3.
