Description
J. F. SANDELL. DEVICE FR` CONNECTING BAMBOO. APPLIoA'rIoN FILED JUNE 9, 1910.
Patented A111225, 1911 OFFICE Appncaua filed Julie 9, 1910. sei-iai no. 566,038.
To all whomtt may concern:
Be it known that l. Joux l". Saxon-zml. a citizen ofthe [vnitcd States. residing at loll I "arragnt avenue. Chicago, in'the7county ot' Cook and State'of Illinois. have invented a new and useful Imlnovement in Devices for Connecting Bamboo, of which the following is a specitication. l
My invention relates to certain new and ing bamboo and is tally described and e.\: plained inthe specification and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective viewsof the'end oi a pieccof bamboowith the tirst tcrrulc in place, tbe bamboo slotted and the connecting device separate therefrom; Fig. 2 is an ele-I vation oft'he. same parts `with the. plug"r forced Home: Fig. il is a view similar to Fig.- 2 showing the' parts in the next stage of the operationandFig. t is a similar elevation showing;I the completed construction.
Very greaty difliculty has been experienced in the past'in working with bamboo because ofthe facttha-t ,any usual c'onnectincr device therefor lwill"have a great tendency to split the bamboo.. Furthermore expandinglr plugs o'r nuts have been used jwith anrordinary piece off.'.hzunbslwnrrounded b v a terrnle, but Stich constructions are unsatisfactory because theinner -tibers of a piece ot bamboo `I are comparativelyweak, and, if hey are broken in place, they will slideout.longitudinally. An vexpanding nut or bolt will therefore simply take hold of these weaker fibers and when ]nessure or.4ten:-tion is ap-` )lied will break the same, and the eonnect lng device can then be veryeasily pulled longitudinally from the end of the piece.
40- In the present devicey a small ferrule A is first Alaced upon the end' of a piece which is `to e joined, the same being slipped back aboutthree inches from ythe end and titting as tightly asis convenient. The bamboo is then sawed longitudinally in the manner illustrated to divide it into four separate pieces at its end, the ferrule reventing the continuation of the, saw-korf y splitting..
B is a plopr which is sli ghtl;r trusto-comcat "0 in shape and has a square hole to receive a bolt- C threaded at its end. provided witha head at the other` and provided also with a square shank adjacentl to the head tocooperate with the holel in the plug. The plug,r isplaced upon the bolt with its smaller Specification of Letters Patent.
then forced into the' bamboo piece inthe useful improvements in devices t'or connect- .far as possible so thata "construction" completed the plug is held absolutely.-
DEVICE FOR `CONNLEC'LING BAMBOO.
Patented Apr. 25, 31911,
cnd extendingr awa)Y from ythe head and is manne'` shown in Fig. 2Q the four sectorsof the bamboo spreadingl apart as shown, Tl'UVM pld;V i.` toi-cedaV far into the piece as is p: i ible. 'l`hc 'tree-ends ot' the four Section Af the end ot the' bamboo piece are ,"tlietil brought together b v a suitable clamping-gfl ef vice. such as the pieceV of wire twf. i shown in l"i 3. and a ferrnlc D istie|` driven on to the end ot' the bamboo'p 'i nut ll is then screwed up on the bolt:V by a manipulation of the nutV in anfob'v' manner the plug; is-drawn toward the" n ot the bamboo piece as far asfposshibl washer or plate beineT intcrposetljfbefn en the nut and the end of therlmmbol g thepullingl 'out of the plug.. The si alldife'r-1 thatshown'in Fig. -t is producef'l.:
'lt is to be noted that the slightly con character ot' thc 4plug permits ityto fiU shape. which the inside ofthe banib ultimatcliv takes. and that when theqoin't nun-ably ia place. l"urtl1ern iore, thephi'g not only engages the. comparativelyweak which is reduced both to the.front..and of the plug. so that any fort-enthielt gli be applied tending to'movc thep'lu'gy @e5 sisted by the 'entire body of the-lil-lnlqylf .-\s a result of this construction, the. piece is very readily and cheaply provided with a sereuthreaded peg extending' f' l -1'- its end in position to be satisfactoriyI .I n" as a means of union with other partsff any nature whatsoever.
-Thc device is exceedingly .strong and can be made very cheaply and it has been deinonst-rated in practice repeatedly that when this device is used in connection with a piece of bambooabout an inch in dianieter a threeeighths inch bolt can readily' be twisted ot y before -the bamboo will break, crack 'or split.
In fact the union is in ever way. as strong as the `original material of t e bamboo.
It' 'will-be evident that the-device `and. 105 method herein made, shown and described, while especially devised "for bamboo are equally applicable to use in connection wlth any other similar tubular growth havmg thelongitudinal fibers of bamboo, andwhen I use the word bamboo in this specification and.
claims, I do so in a'broadly gcnericsense y 'iiitendin thereby to covernot only1 the 'substance w ich istechnically known as bamboo but other similar hollow reed like tubu-" lar growth, which can beused for similar purposes.
I 'realize that Onsidmble variati@ is ossible in the details of construction of my Improved device without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not intend, t erefore, t'o limit myself to the' specific form herein shown and described.
What I claim as new and desire to secure' by Letters Patent, isf- 1. The combination with a tube of bamboov of a ferrule on thetube, the tube being split above the ferrule, a plug of larger diameter than the tube driven into the same, and a second ferrule placed' around the free-ends of the sections to contract the same to 'embrace the plug.
2. The combination with a tube of bamboo of a frrrule on the tube, the tube being split above the ferrule, a plug of-largerdiameter than the tube driven into Athe same, and a second feirule placed...a round the free-ends of `the sections tocontract thesame to ern-- brace the plug, the said 'rst ferrule being forcibly drawn toward th`e secondlferrule' to embrace the' plug tightly between thema 3. The combination with'a tube ofbani`f boo, and a ferrule on the tube, Vthe tube being split above the ferrule to form sections, of a frusto-c'onical plug forced into the split part of the tube, and a second ferrule. placed 'around the free-.ends of the sections of the tube 'to contract the same to embracel the plug, the plug being forcibly drawn into said contractin space.
4. The combination with a tube of bamboo, and a ferrule on tl-e'tube, the tube being split above the ferrlile to forni sections, of a frusto-conical plug forced -into the splitpart z of the tube, and a second ferrule placed around the free-ends of 'the sections vofthe said contracte being driven"toward the plug after such tube to contract the same to embrace the plug, the plu being forcibly drawn into space, and the first ferrule itracted part.
5. The combination with a tube vof bamboosplitfat its end, of a lug of greater diameter than the. tube andp placed therein tio expand the tube opposite said plug, means for preventing the expansion of the tube in .advance of the plug, means for contracting the tube in the rear of the plug, and means fordrawing the plug forcibly into the cone.. 'rheicombinauon wat a tube of bamboo split at its end, of a frusto-conical plug 'of greater diameter than the tube and placed therein with its smaller end toward the enda of the tube, whereby the tube is expanded opposite the larger end of said plug, means f or preventing the expansion of the tube in advance of the plug, means for contracting'the'tube in the rear of the plug,
'drawing of the plug for the vpurpose set and means for drawing the plug forcibly into the contracted part. v
7. The method of providing an anchorage 'for an attaching'plug in a tubeof bamboo or other similar tube of vegetable iibrous growth, which consists in splitting the end of the ltube to divide the same into sections,
expanding thesectionsto receive t-he plug,
and contractin the ends of -the sect-ions to a less diameter n the plug.
' 8, .The method of securing fan attaching plug within a vegetable tubular growth havulg" longitudinal fibers, .is bamboo, which consists 1n placing on said tube'near the end thereof means to prevent the splittin of the tube, dividing the tube beyond sai means into` separate sections longitudinally, insert-- ing lnisuch divided portion a lug of greater diameter than the diameter of) the' tube, contracting the divided portion of the tube beyond the plug, placing Vbinding means about such contracted expansion thereof, an forcibly ravving the plug into such contracted portion for the purpose set forth'.
