EJ'ECTOR-TYPE OF WRENCH 0R KEY Filed June 28, 1968 v 'INVENTOR. 55 YMOt/R ,4. 057m 66/? ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,533,314 EJECTOR-TYPE 0F WRENCH 0R KEY Seymour A. Ostrager, Bronx, N.Y., assignor to Miracle Instrument Co., New York, N.Y., a corporation of Delaware Filed June 28, 1968, Ser. No. 740,966
Int. Cl. B25b 13/00 US. Cl. 81-53 4 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Construction of the device in the manner defined provides a larger diameter handgrip for the handle member to facilitate use thereof and a more compact assemblage of the device for packaging and storage.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a device made according to my invention, with parts of the construction shown in elevation and indicating the handle member in extended operative position in dot-dash lines.
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1 showing the handle member in operative position and omitting background showing of the body portion of the device; and
FIG. 3 is an end view of the handle member detached.
In illustrating one adaptation and use of the invention, I have shown in FIG. 1 an ejector-type of wrench or tool, sometimes referred to as a key, comprising an elongated key element in the form of a rod body, having a handle pivot end 11, rounded as seen at 11', a spring seat collar 12 and a reduced shank 13. The lower end of the shank 13 terminates in a key head 14, square in form and fashioned to fit predetermined apparatus to be controlled by a wrench or key. Mounted in the shank 13, inwardly of and adjacent said head 14, is a key pin 15.
Slidably mounted on the shank 13 and collar 12 is a sleeve 16, longer than the shank 13, including the head 14 thereof. The bore 17 of the sleeve 16 includes an inwardly projecting annular stop or flange 18. At one side of the stop 18 is a washer 19, forming a seat for a spring 20, also seating upon the collar 12. At the other side of the stop 18 is a shim 21, on which the key pin normally seats when the device is not in use. The sleeve 16 has, near its free end, opposed apertures 22, facilitating attachment and detachment of the pin 15.
The free end portion of the rod end 11 supports a pivot pin 23 for pivotally coupling a member 24 therewith. The member 24, while being a handle for the device or element 10, also forms a housing enveloping the major portion of the tool or wrench when the same is not in use, as well as when the device is shipped or stored.
The member 24 has a handgrip portion 25, generally channel or horseshoe-shaped in cross-sectional form, as will appear from a consideration of FIG. 3; in other words, one side of the handgrip is open to receive and house the shank and sleeve, as well as part of the rod end 11. Note the full line showing of the member 24 in FIG. 1.
In the dot-dash illustration of the member 24 in FIG. 1, the member is in extended use position, substantially at right angles to the axis of 11, 12, 13 and 14.
The pivot end of member 24 is reduced in cross-sectional form, as seen at 26 in FIG. 2 of the drawing, to engage the rod end 11. The end 26 has a rounded closure 27 forming a stop, checking movement of the member 24 into operative position. Note dot-dash line showing in FIG. 1. The closed end 27 has an outwardly projecting thumbpiece 28, note FIG. 2. The pivot pin 23 is suitably fixed in the sides of the end 26, as seen at 23 in FIG. 2.
As with other devices of the type and kind under consideration, when the handle member 24 is in the raised operative position, as shown in dot-dash lines in FIG. 1, movement of the Wrench or tool in engagement with a workpiece serves to slide the sleeve 16 along the shank against the action of the spring 20 to expose the key head 14 for engagement with the workpiece and, on completion of the operation of the tool, release of pressure will automatically eject the tool from the workpiece by action of the spring 20.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character defined, including a rod body having a key head end with ejector sleeve means slidably mounted on the body and tensionally supported normally in key head enveloping position, a handle member pivotally mounted in connection with a free end portion of said rod body for movement into a non-use position longitudinally of said body and into a use position extending at right angles to said body, and said handle member comprising an elongated channel portion forming a wide handgrip, and said channel portion extending to the end of said key head and ejector means providing a protective housing for the rod body when said handle member is in nonuse position.
2. A device as defined in claim 1, wherein the end of the rod body pivotally supporting the handle member is rounded, and the handle member has a reduced pivot end, including a rounded closure wall operatively engaging the rod body in checking movement of the handle member into operative position.
3. A device as defined in claim 2, wherein said handle member is rounded at its pivot end and includes an outwardly projecting thumbpiece extending from said rounded end in a direction opposite to said channel portion.
4. A device as defined in claim 1, wherein means is employed on said body operatively engaging the sleeve in checking movement of the sleeve into normal key head controlling position.
