'Ihls invention relates to tools for expanding articles into iilxed positions in structures and more particularly to a'tool for expanding'metal ferrules into locking engagement with the sur-- rounding structure of holes into which they have been inserted.
An important object of this invention is to provide a tool of novel design for expanding metal ferrules into fixed pomtion in structures, such as 1. into engagement with the surrounding portions a Various other objects, advantages and meritorious features of the invention will appear more fully from the following specification, appended claims and accompanying drawing, wherein:

- Referring to the drawing in detail, the primary supporting part of the tool is formed vby an elongated or tubular member I0. 'Ihe exterior surface of this body is preferably knurled to facilitate handling of the tool during Athe operation of the tool. Extending axially through the body .Il in spaced relationship to the inner wall thereof is a rod I2. The opposite ends of this rod project beyond the ends of the tubular body I l. An
element or nut Il preferably of hexangular I as shown in Fig. 5 is slidably tted in a corresponding shaped wall 'section Il of the body I l. The element Il is ilxed to the rod I2 and slidably supports the same upon the axis of the body Il in spaced relation to the inner walls thereof. The angular engagement of this element with the inner wall section II of the body Il slidably keys the rod to the body-so that the rod is only capable of a lengthwise movement.
'Ihe end section Il o f the rod adjacent the' element Il is externally threaded as shown. A nut is threaded to this section and carries oppositely disposed arms forming a crank handle 22 for the tool. When the handle is rotated in one direction, such as in the direction of the arrow in Figs. l and 4, the inner edge of the nut 2l bears against the end of the body Il and as a consequence the result of the threaded engagement of the nut 2l on the rod I2 the latter is caused to be moved longitudinally toward the right in Figs. l and 2. 'Ihis longitudinal movement, unless otherwise restricted by the expansive. action on a ferrule described later, is limited by the abutment of the hexangular nut I4 against shoulder Il of thebody Il.
The opposite projecting end of the rod I2 is gradually enlarged in diameter to form the active means for expanding the ferrule. 'Ihis enlargement is preferably accomplished by threading a cone-shaped element 22 upon the end of the rod I2' with the cone increasing to a greater diameter as the outer end of the rod is approached. The maximum diameter ofthe cone 23 is less than the inner diameter of the type of i'errule to be expanded so that the latter may be slipped over the enlarged end of the rod.
Carried upon the end of the body I0 adjacent the enlarged end of the rod I2 is a circular member'or cap 24. This member is capable oi adjustment longitudinally of, the body by reason of its threaded engagement to the end of the body as shown. A lock jaw nut 2C is also threaded on the body to lock the cap in any adjusted position. Other locking means, however, may be provided such as a lock screwextending radiallyl through the member into engagement with the body. Member 24 is of a size substantially equal to the type of ferrule to be expanded. Its outer end is preferably beveled or chamfered at 22 to form an annular seat against which the flanged end of a ferrule may be seated as shown in Fig. 2.

' The tool described hereinabovel is particularly adapted for expanding a door handle ferrule in place on a motor vehicle. The door handle projects through the door panel from one side to the other and the ferrule forms a support 'for the handle as well as to improve its appearance. A ferrule encircles the door handle at the point which it enters the door panel. In Fig. 3 a crosssectional view through a door panel M is shown prior to the insertion of a ferrule. The aperture in the door panel preferably contains a iiexible washer composed preferably of rubber or some similar material.
To operate the tool the ferrule may be inserted into the door handle aperture of the washer and the operating end of the tool inserted therethrough or if desired the washer may be slipped upon the tool as shown in Fig. 2. In either event thejawsofthesleeveshouldbeintheirnormal.

1. A ferrule expanding tool comprising, in combination, a tubular body, a sleeve fixed at one end within the body against rotation and extending away from said iixed end axially through the body spaced therefrom and having its opposite end projecting beyond the end of the body and provided therebeyond with an outwardly projectthe body.
2. A ferrule expanding tool comprising, in combination, a tubular body, a sleeve iixed at one end within the body against rotation and extending away from said ilxed end axially through the body spaced therefrom and having its opposite end projecting beyond the end of the body' and provided 'therebeyond with an outwardly projecting. ferrule seating faoe bevelled on the side facing the end of the body, said sleeve being slitted lengthwise toward said opposite nxed end, a cap having an annular ferrule seating outer end face threaded upon the end of the body to project therebeyond toward the ferrule seating face on the end of the sleeve but spaced therefrom, said cap being threadedly adjustable lengthwise upon the body toward and away from the ferrule seating face of the sleeve, a rod extending axially through the sleeve and body projecting beyond the ends thereof, means supporting the rod within the body against rotation but for slidable movement lengthwise thereto, that end of the rod projecting beyond the split end of the sleeve being tapered and of a diameter greater than the internal diameter of the split end of the sleeve to expand the split end of the sleeve as the tapered end of the rod is drawn thereinto, means coupled-with the opposite end of therod to move the rod lengthwise through the body, and
means limiting the movement of the rod through the body in the direction which expands the split end of the sleeve thereby limiting the expansion imparted to the sleeve by the rod.
3. A ferrule expanding tool comprising, in combination, a tubular body, a sleeve xed at one end withinthe body against rotation and extending away from said ilxed end axially through the body spaced therefrom and having its opposite end projecting beyond the end of the body and provided therebeyond with an outwardly projecting ferrule seating face bevelled on the side facing the end of body, said sleeve being slitted lengthwise toward said opposite fixed end, a cap having an annular ferrule seating outer end i'aoe threaded upon the end of the body to project therebeyond toward the ferrule seating face on the end of the sleeve but spaced therefrom, said cap being threadedly adjustable lengthwise upon the body toward and away from the ferrule seating face of the sleeve, a rod extending axially through the sleeve and body projecting beyond the ends thereof, said rod having a nut-fixed thereon, which nut is mounted within the body between the ixed end of the sleeve and the end diameter of the split end of the sleeve to expand such split end of the sleeve as the cone is drawn thereinto, said body having a part adapted to engage said nut on the rod to limit the slidable movement of the rod in the direction to ex- 5 pand the split end of the sleeve.
