Description

March 3, 1936. G. w. HACKNEY MULTIPARALLEL POINT STRIPING PENCIL Filed Sept. l2, 1954 A, NVENTOR.
Patented Mar. 3, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My present invention pertains to pencils and it contemplates the provision of a simple and inexpensive device comprising multi-leads of various colors whereby with one stroke of the pencil a number of vari-colored impressions may be made on a sheet of paper or the like.
The invention further contemplates a multicolored lead pencil that is primarily adapted for placing the well known striped border on an envelope to indicate air mail service.
Other objects and characteristic advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawing accompanying this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating my novel device and the preferred embodiment, of holding the multi-colored lead thereof.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken in the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Figure 3.
Figure 3 is an edge elevation of the device.
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the lead clamping element.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a transverse section taken on the line 6 6 of Figure 2.
Figures 7 and 8 are views similar to Figure 6 taken on the lines 1 1 and 8 3 respectively of Figure 2.
Figure 9 is a modified form of construction in which the lead is arranged in a pencil after the manner of the well known wooden pencil.
Figure 10 is a sectional View taken in the plane indicated by the line lll-Ill of Figure 9.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawing of Figures 1 to 8 inclusive, and particularly reference will now be made to said figures.
The invention pertains primarily to a pencil having multi-leads of a similar color or various colors as is desirable, and, for the purpose of illustration only, I show the manner in the preferred embodiment as well as in the modified form as to how these leads are held.
The casing I is preferably rectangular and of metal or the like and hollow throughout. Arranged within the hollow casing l is a lead clamping member designated as a whole by 2 having the legs 3 that are wedge shaped on their outer walls and at their lower ends. The clamping member 2 is also provided on its lower ends with wedge shaped portions 5 that coact with the wedge shaped portions 4 of the casing member.
At its upper end the clamping member 2 is rigidly secured to a threaded stud 6 that engages the threads 8 of a thumb nut l.
(Cl. 1Z0-14) Interposed between a series of multi-colored leads Iii, Il and i2 are spacers 9 and these leads are preferably flat.
In the practical operation of the device, the preferred embodiment which we are now considering, the operator uses the device after the manner of a pencil and by doing so various co-lored lines may be drawn. As the tightening of the nut l pulls the lead clamping member 2 into the casing l causing the lower points of the clamp to press upon the leads preventing their movement, so when it is desired to lengthen the leads it is done by first loosening the clamping nut which allows the inner member to slide out of the casing, when the leads are pulled out to the desired length by hand and then clamped into place by tightening the nut which reverses the operation and pulls the leads back part way into the casing, at the same time forcing the points of the clamping member together, which holds the leads rmly.
What I claim is:
1. A multi colored marking pencil comprising a tubular outer casing, wedge-shaped portions formed interiorly on the lower end of the casing, lead clamping means comprising a flanged member adapted to be interposed withinthe outer tubular casing; said inner clamping member being wedge-shaped on its lower outer face whereby the hanged member will be contracted when the wedge-shaped portion thereof contacts the wedge-shaped portion of the outer casing, a screw having a head and adapted to be secured on the upper end of the inner casing, a thumb-nut adapted to engage the thread of the screw to move the inner member upwardly with respect to the outer casing, multi-colored leads engaged by the inner member and spacers arranged between the leads.
2. As an article of manufacture, the combination of a outer tubular casing having a wedgeshaped inner flange at its lower end, a clamp-ing member within and adapted to be moved upwardly with respect to the rst casing and being slightly beveled on its outer face at the lower end thereof whereby the inner clamping member will be contracted at its lower end when the Wedge-shaped portions of the outer casing grip the beveled end of the inner member, means for moving the inner member upwardly in the outer casing, leads of varied colors adapted to be clamped within the inner member and spacers adapted to be interposed between the various leads substantially as and for the purpose specined.
