NICHOLAS W. VJ'HITE, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
PUNGHINGr-BAG APPARATUS.
Application led August 27, 1909.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, NrcHoLAs W. l/VHITE, of Syracuse, in the county of Qnondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Punching-Bag Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the production of a punching bag apparatus; and it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
ln describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is an inverted plan of the ceiling of my punching bag apparatus. Fig. 2 is a section of part of the ceiling, the punching bag, suspended from the ceiling, being also shown. F 3 is a fragmentary view illustrating the track from which the bag is suspended.
rlhe ceiling l of this apparatus is formed with a tortuous track, and the punching bag 2 is suspended from the ceiling by means movable along the track when the bag is struck. As here shown, the ceiling is formed with a tortuous slot 3 opening through upper and lower faces of the ceiling l, and the bag1 2 is suspended by a part 4 movable along the upwardly facing tracks 5 on opposite sides of the slot and connected to the bag by a cord G extending through the slot, the part 4 being here shown as a ball of greater diameter than the slot. Preferably, the tracks 5 are interrupted at predetermined points in order that the part 4 will drop to the floor when it reaches said points, and as here shown, these interruptions are passages 7 of greater width than the slot 3 and the part 4 in order that the part 4 will pass therethrough when it arrives at one of the passages 7. The ceiling l may be constructed and secured in position in any suitable manner and is here shown as secured to beams 8, and as spaced apart therefrom by parts 9.
ln operation when the bag 2 is struck, in addition to swinging and rebounding from the ceiling in the ordinary manner, it will travel relatively to the ceiling and consequently the operator cannot judge in what Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 191i.
Serial No. 514,863.
direction the bag will rebound, and will be compelled to follow the bag in order to strike it, thus quickening the eye and exercising the legs and lower portion of the body as well as the arms and shoulders. When the part 4 arrives at one of the passages 7 the bag will drop to the floor, these passages 7 being usuallv located along the slot in places where it is dflicult to corner the bag.
vWhat l claim is l. A punching bag apparatus comprising a ceiling, provided with a track facing upwardly, a punching bag, means for suspending the bag and a part slidable on and supported on the upper face of the track, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A punching bag apparatus comprising a ceiling provided with a tortuous track, a punching bag, and means for suspending the bag from the ceiling including a part coacting with the track, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A punching bag apparatus comprising a ceiling having a tortuous slot, and tracks on opposite sides of the slot, a punching bag, and means for suspending the bag from the ceiling through the slot comprising a part movable along the slot and engaging the tracks on opposite sides thereof and a cord connecting said part and the punching bag, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. A punching bag apparatus comprising a ceiling having a tortuous track, the track being interrupted at predetermined points, a punching bag, and means for suspending the punching bag from the ceiling including a part movable along and supported by the track and a cord connecting said part and the punching bag, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. A punching bag apparatus comprising a ceiling having a tortuous slot, tracks on opposite sides of the slot, and passages located at predetermined points along the slot, the passages being of greater diameter than the width of the slot and interrupting said tracks, a punching bag, and means for suspending the punching bag from the ceiling testing witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York7 10 this 21st day of June, 1909.
NICHOLAS IV. WHITE.
including a part movable along the tracks, said part being of greater diameter than the siot'and of less diameter than Said passages and a oord connecting said part and the punching bag, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. Vitnesses:
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto S. DAVIS, signed my name in the presence of two at- F. Gr. BoDELL.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
