TOY DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 16, 1910.
Patented Apr. 18, 1911.
Serial No. 572,360.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES N. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at lashing-ton, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to toy devices, and has for its principal object to provide an ad vertising, or display novelty, which will afford amusement when manipulated.
Briefly, my invention consists in a form, or figure, of cardboard or like material, which normally'assumes a standing, or erect position, and when depressed, causes the advertising or display matter to be presented before the eye of the observer.
In a preferred embodiment, my invention consists in the form and arrangement of parts which will hereinafter be fully described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, where I have shown one application of my invention, Figure I is a view in perspective, of my invention, showing the parts in normal position; Fig. II is a view in end elevation, with the parts in the same position; Fig. III is a view in front elevation showing the figure depressed, and the display matter exposed, and Fig. IV is a view in end elevation, with the parts in the same position as Fig. III.
Referring to the drawings, I employ a single blank of cardboard, or other suitable material, which may be folded to form the several parts, cooperating as shown. Itwill be apparent that instead of using a single piece of material, I might make the several elements of separate parts, and hinge them together in any suitable manner.
A is a base, at the front of which is a figure B, of any desirable form, and shown here as representing a cow. At the back of base A is a rear portion 0, having the member D extending from its upper end down ward, to form a support for the figure B. The supporting member D is provided on its front face with advertising or display matter as desirable, which is brought into view in the manner presently to be described.
The base A is provided with slots a, and rear portion C is provided with correspondparts,
behind and supporting figure B, which however lies at such an angle as to prevent the support D from going forward any farther.
To operate the device, it is held, preferably, in one hand with the thumb under the base, and the fingers resting against the front figure. Upon bringing the thumb and fingers together, thus applying pressure to the front figure, the same is depressed toward the base, thereby forcing support D rearwardly, and exposing it to View, as shown clearly in Figs. III and. IV. As soon as pressure is removed from the parts, they immediately assume the normal position, under action of the flexible band. It will be obvious that any kind of display, or advertising matter may be presented, and the figure B and support D may constitute portions of a figure which is complete, when both are fully exposed.
I may, in some instances, employ a suitable whistle, or sounding device, positioned on the base A, and adapted to be operated upon depression of figure B into contact therewith.
It will be apparent that various other changes and modifications may be had in my invention, without departing from the essential feature thereof, and the appended claims are intended to cover any such embodiments as come within the general idea herein involved.
lVhat I desire to secure by Letters-Patent, and claim, is:
1. A toy device of the character described, including a base, a rear portion hinged thereto, a front portion, or figure hinged to the base, a support for said front portion hinged to the upper end of the aforesaid rear portion, and means for holding said support normally parallel and adjacent to the front portion.
2. A toy device of the character described, including a base, a rear portion hinged thereto, a front portion, or figure hinged to the base, a support for said front portion hinged to the upper end of the aforesaid rear portion, and a flexible band in engagement with said base and said rear portion.
3. A toy device of the character described, including, in a single piece, a base, a rear portion hinged thereto, a front portion, or figure hinged to the base, a support for said front portion hinged to the upper end'of the aforesaid rear portion, and means for holding said support normally parallel and adjacent to the front portion.
4. A toy device of the character described, including, in a single piece, a base, a rear portion hinged thereto, a front portion, or figure hinged to the base, a support for said front portion hinged to the upper end of the aforesaid rear portion, and a flexible band in engagement With said base and said rear portion.
5. A toy device of the character described, including a base, a rear portion hinged thereto, a front portion or figure hinged to the base, and a support for said front portion hinged to the upper end of the aforesaid rear portion, said support being held in yieldable engagement With the front portion.
6. A toy device of the character described, including a base, a front portion or figure, a rear portion hinged to the base, and a yieldably held support for the front portion carried by said rear portion. 7
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
