WILLIAM PARSON. 07F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 98,942,
van
dated January 18,1870.
IMPROVED EXTENSION-TABLE.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent: and making puft of the Bamm I, WinLIAM FAnsoN, of theI city of Philadelphia, and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Connecting the Leaves of Extension-Tables, of which the l'ollowingis a specification.
Ihe nature ot my invention consists in the connection of the auxiliary leaves ot' the table, by means of slotted metallic plates and headed pins, the plates being lastened in one edge 0f thc leaves, and t-he pins in the other edge. lI'he slots in the plate have an cnlargemeut at one end, through wh eh the heads of the respective pins pass, until they come inside ofthe plates as the leaves are successively brought together.
V The leaves are then pushed forward, until their ends come into line with the ends of the tops ofthe tables, as hereinafter described.
'Io enable others skilled iu the art to which my improvement appertains, to make and use my invention, l will now give a detailed descriptiouthereot'.
In the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification-#- Figure 1 is a plain view of the top of the table, with the leaves inv connection, one of the leaves being in position to be connected.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the auxiliary leaf B.
Figures 3 and `4: are a face and edge view ot' one of the plates C, full size.
Figure 5 is a peipective view of one of the screws D, full size.
Like letters in all the figures indicate the same parts.
A A representthe tops of the end tables, between which any number ot' auxiliary leaves, B B', are connected.
In one edge of the leaves B B', there are plates C,
which aresunk flush with the saine, and confined in place by means of screws a, as seen in tig. 2.
1n the connecting edgeot' the top A there are screws D 1),.w'hich have heads, b, that are slipped through the slots c, at the enlargement c', when the leafB is Then the leaf is pushed forward until it comes into the position represented by full lines, the shoulder d of the heads b bearing against vthe inside face of the plates, the diameter of the stem of the screws heilig a trifie less than the width ot' the slot c, so as not to prevent the easy movement of the leaf'.
There is a recess, e, back of the plates C, for the passage of the head ot' the. screws, as seen in figs. l.
and 2. Ihe next leaf is then hrought'into the position represented by t'ull lines, and connected in like manuel'. y
` lf it is the last leaf to be connected, "as represented in' the drawings, the top A is pushed into the position represented by dotted lilies, and then the leat' is pushed forward, in range with the continued dotted end line, and the rest of combined table-top; and thus the leaves and tops are held firmly together.
One of the screws, D, is shown in-detail in tig. 5.
If desired, plain pins, having heads l), may take the place of the screws D,
I arrange the plates C and screws D in such a manner that there may he no obstruction in bringing the tops A and A together, for connection in the usual way, when the auxiliary leaves B B' are not used. I first connect the plates and screws with the connecting edges of the tops `A and A', so thatl when the ends ot' the top are in line, the heads b of the screws may slip through the enlargement c of the. slots c ot' the plates, and then arrange the plates and screws with the auxiliary leaves, to correspond with this arrangement, the pins and plates being all on a line with each other.
What I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-u rIhe plates C, and pins or screws D, in combination with `the edges of the tops A and A', and the aux iliary leaves B B', whereby the leaves'are held in place, substantially in the manner hereinbelore described.
In testimony that the above is my invention, I have hereunto set my hand, and affixed my seal, this 24111 day ot' December, 1869. I v
