Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1911.
Application filed June 29, 1910. Serial No. 569,588.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Or'ro HAssELMANN, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Wiesbaden, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surgical Instruments for Cutting Bandages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved surgical instrument by which bandages can be cut open after their use in a handy and easy way.
The accompanying drawing shows the improved instrument.
Figure 1 is a side view of the same, Fig. 2 a top view thereof, the cutter being omitted, Fig. 3 shows the screw for fixing the cutter, which is shown separated in Fig. 4:. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the cutter.
The instrument comprises a lever 1 which is slightly bent near its front end. Between said bend 2 and its front extremity, said lever carries an elongated slot 3, in which a cutter 4 can be fixed by means of a screw 5 in such a way that it projects from the underside of the lever and lies with its cutting edge toward the front extremity of the lever. Said front extremity is flattened, as shown in Fig. 2, and provided with an up turned gripping portion 6, as shown in Fig. 1.
For using the instrument the cutter is shifted beneath a bandage and an upward pressure is exerted on the rear end of the lever, the front extremity of the lever then firmly gripping the bandage, whereby the knife can cut the same, the lever being then shifted with its knife along the out just made, for further cutting in the way described.
The knife lcan be also reversed or turned in the lever so that its cutting edge projects to the rear, to suit any requirements.
A surgical instrument for cutting bandages after their use, comprising a lever having a flattened front end and a slight bend near the same, a detachable knife projecting from the underside of said lever and located between said bend and front end, and an upturned gripping portion at the front extremity of said lever, for the purpose set forth.
