Specification of Letters Patent.
Be it known that I, THEODOR H. MUELLER,
'a subjectof theEmperor of Germany, residm at Dalton, in the county of Berkshire and. tateof- Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ignition Systems, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ignition systems for internal combustion eugines, the object of the invention being to combine with a ma neto electric machine of the high potentia type a stationary induction coil the primary winding of the coil being included in circuit with a make and break device of any suitable construction;

The generator shown in outline herein is claimed in Letters Patent of the United States issued to me on December 21, 1909 numbered 943,697, on an application filed February 25, 1907 for Magneto electric machines and is merely illustrative of the ,formof generator employed by me.

A further object of the invention consists in connecting, in parallel arrangement with the coil of the primary winding, a battery, and a second make and break device being included in the connections of the pr1mary winding of the coil whereby when the magneto is not being operated from the motor the vaporous charge in the engine cylinders may be ignitedifrom'the second make and ;'break or push button device, and the engine started. The usual condenser is arranged across the terminals of the make and break devices. v
Referring to the drawings forming part of this application,the figure in this case clearly illustrates my invention.

The movable part of the make and break device is designated by g and is connected to the primary windings by means of the wire 1'.
A condenser s is connected by means of the wire t to the wire n at the point it which is one side of the make and break device 7), and the other terminal of the condenser is connected by means of a wire 1), to the elastic strip 10. The condenser s is emplo ed as usual to absorb the spark at the terminals 0 and q and also to increase the inductive effect in the secondary winding 9 of the induction coil 6.
It should be understood that durin the operation of the magneto the core 0? the induction coil 6 is energized by means of the extension members'of the pole-pieces, thus generating an electromotive force in the primary windin and, at break of the circuit, by means 0 the make and break device 77, a current is produced in the secondary windin g which appears at the plug 2' in the form 0 a spark.

When it is desired to'ignite the vaporous charge and start themotor, from the seat of an automobile for example, by means of the movable push button or contact member 4, the operator then forces the tongue '10 away from the switch member 7 thus breaking the contact between the switch 7 and tongue 10 at 7 The reduced portion 4 of the movable member 4 passes through theopeningv 11 in the tongue 10 and engages the fixed contact member 5,,and at thesame time the surface around the opening 11 is engaged'by the shouldered portion 4 of the movable contact member 4 and moves the tongue 10.away from the swi'tchmemher 7 and breaks the circuit leading to the wire o, as mentioned above. The current then flows from the battery g by the wire 3 to the contact 4; and from this contact-to the contact 5, wire 12, wire a, primary winding f, and wire 'w back to the other pole of the battery 3 When the contacts 4 and 5 are opened, a spark will appear at the plug 2' thus starting the motor and operating the make and break devices p. The operator the wire 25 being connected to the other ter I 'minal of the condenser s by means of the wires t, n, and 12. If it is desired to cut 1 current will be the rotation of the cam 7 of the make and break device p will close the circuit through the primary winding f of, the coil 6 and produce the spark current in the secondary winding which will flow'to the plug 2' by means of the wire it.
When the engine is not running, and the terminals g and, o are open, if the operator wishes to start 'the engine he simply closes the terminals 4 and 5 to permit the current to flow from the battery yoto' theprimary winding-by means of the wires 12,7 and 10. When the terminals 4 and 5 are separated, the induced current in the secondary winding will cause the spark to be produced at the plug 2', the condenser at the same time discharging, in order to increase the inductive eflect of the secondarywinding 4 and 5.
It will therefore beseen that I'have pro: duced a very simple and inexpensive means forigniting the'vaporous, charge of an in-' and extinguishing the spark at the'terminals coil isenergized by the generator which is shown in outline only in the present case.
