Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 19 11 Application filed September 28, 1909. Serial 110. 519,942.
To all wl'wm'itmay concern: I 4
Be it known-that I, DWIGHT W. WADswon'rn,a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of' Van Enron and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in S ark-Plugs, of which the following is a speci cation. I
This invention relates to improvements in spark plugs for internal combustion engines, t e ob ect of the invention being to effect improvements whereby the spark plug is provided with a lurallty of spark aps so that a number of e ectric sparks will ge produced at each closing of the electriccircuit and ignition of the explosive gases in the engine made certain as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :--Figure 1 is an elevation of a spark v lug showing one' form of this invention. ig. -2' is an end View showing the exposed end of the'plug.
Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the insulating core showing the inner conductor and also showing one of the spark aps. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing a 'mod ified construction of the insulating core. Fig. 5 is an end elevation, of the same.
-The insulating core 1 in which the inner conductor 2 is disposed is here-shown as fitted in the usual metal shell 3 and is detach-- ably secured therein by the usual screw sleeve 4. In accordance with my invention that portion of the inner conductor which is located at the exposed or inner end of the insulating core is made of a plurality of sections, four of such sections being shown at 5 in Fig. 2 and three being shownat 6 in Fi 5. In the form of the invention shown in igs. 1, 2, and 3, said sections are embedded in the insulator core 1 and the latter has a head 7 at its exposed end which head is provided with recesses 8 which ex ose the ends of said embedded sections of t e inner conductor, said sections being separated from each other so as to form a plurality of spark gaps or air gaps9 between them. One .of the sections or electrodes 5 is s aced from and presented to an outer electro e 10 which is secured on the shell 3 so that another spark or air gap is formed between said section and said outer electrode 10..
It will be understood that each-time an electric circuit is completedv through the conductor; the separated sections thereof which constitute a series of separated electrodes will cause a plurality of s arks to be produced and hence ignition o gases or mixture in the engine cylinder will be insured. v
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the se arated sections or electrodes 6 of the con uctor 'proje'ctfrom the exposed end of the insulatm core.
of the appended claim.
What is claimed is A spark plug comprisin a metal shell, a core of insulating materia secured within the metal shell and having a head at-its innor en'd provided in .its sides with a series .of recesses formin spaced portions, a conductor secured wit in the insulated core, an electrode connected with said metal shell, and a series of conductor sections supported in the s aced portions of the head at the inner en of the insulated coreand having their ends exposed and in close relationship, whereby a plurality of spark gaps are formed.
A In testimon whereof I aflix my signature .in presence 0 two witnesses.
