UMBRELLA-SUPPORTER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN G. Mrronenn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Umbrella-Supporter, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a. device for the purpose of enabling a person to carry an opened umbrella over himself, or to carry such umbrella in its closed form without either of such acts being performed by such person.

My invention relates to a detachable device for the purpose of supporting and carrying an opened umbrella in which a vertically supported socket with longitudinally therein is used in conjunction with a supporting catch and latching device to rcmovably hold such umbrella in its upright and vertically inclined posit-ion while in use; also a clasp to carry such umbrella when closed.

I attain these objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1. shows the device in use. Fig. is a detail front view of the supporting plate and socket in its removable position in said plate, which socket is partly broken away, showing the holding springs therein, and their relative arrangement. This view also shows the closed end of the socket. Fig. 3. is the top plan view of Fig. 2. showing the mouth of the socket and the arrangement of the holding springs. Fig. 4. is a detail front view of the latching device and the spring or clasp, together with their removable supporting plate. This view also shows in dotted outline the said latching device in an unlatched and open position. Fig. 5. shows in cross-section the latching and catching device, looking upward, in their combined and united relation, mounted on their removable supporting plate. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the latch of the retaining device. Fig. 7. is a perspective view of the catch of the retaining device. Fig. 8. shows in crosssection the holding clasp spring, looking downward, mounted on its removable supporting plate.

Similar numbers refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

Holding plate 1 has fixed upon it, plate 3, whose sides or edges are turned upwardly and inwardly toward itself, thus forming grooves 4 and 5, which receive and removably hold the corresponding edges 6 and 7 of the removable plate 8, upon which plate is fixed the socket 9. Socket 9 has a flattened bottom consisting of plate 10, and has fixed to its inner wall at 11, curved springs 12, which curved springs lie downwardly from their point of union 11 with said socket, and away from, but within the space within the inner wall of said socket, and are adapted to clutch or clasp the end of the object intended to be held thereby. A second holding plate 13, having ears 14: at or near each corner thereof, is adapted to be held in the position desired by the use of the openings 15 therein. Said holding plate 13 has its sides or edges, between the said cars 1411, turned forwardly and inwardly toward itself, thus forming grooves 16 and 17 to receive and removably hold the corresponding edges 18 and 19 of the removable plate 20, upon which plate, and near the top thereof, is fixed the tongued catch represented in Fig. 7., and the holding spring clasp 21, and upon which removable plate 20, and transversely and in conjunction with said tongued catch is pivotally mounted the grooved latch represented in Fig. 6., as is hereinafter described. Said tongued catch, Fig. 7., is fixed to the removable plate 20 b a rivet 22, and consists of a three-sided, right-angularly and tongue arranged piece of metal, the lower corner of which tongue 23 extends materially beyond its corresponding corner 24, thereby forming an angularly shaped tongue or rest 25 to receive and reiInovably hold the grooved latch shown in ig. G. v

The grooved latch, Fig. (5., may be described as follows: It consists of the base part 26; a perpendicular part 27, bent rightangularly therewith; and the horizontal part 28-, bent right-angularly with the said perpendicular part 27 and parallel with the base part 26; part 28 having upon its lower edge a downwardly and forwardly bent thumblift 29; and its angular and outer edge 30 bent rearwardly and laterally, forming a hook and groove 31, adapted to receive and removably hold the tongue or rest 25 of said catch; a brace piece 32, being connected in the position desired by the use of the with, and a part of, and bent right-angularly with said perpendicular part 27, and which part is fixed to parts 26 and 28 in any suitable manner so as to firmly hold the same together. The said grooved latch is pivotally mounted to the removable plate 20 by a rivet 33 passing through the opening 34:. To the lower part and outward face of the removable plate 20 is fixed the holding spring clasp 21 by any suitable means.

The operation and manner of employing my invent-ion thus described is as follows: The operator first fastens holding plate 1 by any suitable means to his garment, or to any other proper medium, near the waist line and forwardly of the operator. In like manner he fastens holding plate 13 above this point. In grooves 4 and 5 he inserts the corresponding removable plate 8 upon which is securely fixed the socket 9 and the curved springs 12 as described. In grooves 16 and 17 he next inserts the corresponding removable plate 20 upon which is securely fixed the grooved latch (Fig. 7.), the tongued catch (Fig. 6.), and the holding spring clasp 21, as described. The grooved latch (Fig. 7.) is thrown backwardly as shown in dotted outline, Fig. 4., and the butt end of the handle of the umbrella is inserted within the socket 9 and between the springs 12. The part of the umbrella handle somewhat above the butt thereof is placed against the removi able plate 20, and between the catch (Fig. 7.), and the opened grooved latch as shown in dotted outline in Fig. I. Then the grooved latch is closed in front of the said handle until it is received and reinovably held by the tongued catch, thereby holding the umbrella in an upright position.

Should it be desired to carry the umbrella closed, it may be removed from the above described position in an obvious manner and suspended in front of the operator by forcing the handle thereof within the holding spring clasp 21.

In case it should be desired that an umbrella be not carried, all parts of the de vice may be instantly removed except holding plates 1 and 13, thereby obviating any material interference by reason of the said supporter.

Having thus described my invention and the manner of operating the same, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In an umbrella supporter, a grooved holding plate 13; a removable plate 20 fitted and removably held within the grooves of 1 scenes said grooved holding plate; a latch pivotally connected to said removable plate,'consisting of a base part, a perpendicular part, and a horizontal part, said horizontal part having an angularly shaped extremity; a rearwardly and laterally bent hook forming a groove within the bend of said extremity; a thumb-lift forwardly bent from said horizontal part; the brace 32; a catch fixed to said removable plate, oppositely to said latch, and consisting of a base part, a perpendicular part, and a horizontal part; an angularly shapedextremity 25 to said horizontal part, which said groove of the latch engages with the said angular-1y shaped extremity 25 of the catch; and a holding spring clasp 21 fixed to said removable plate, all substantially as shown, for the purpose specified.

2. In an umbrella supporter, a grooved holding plate 13; a removpble plate 20 fitted and removably held within the grooves of said grooved holding plate; a latch pivot,- ally connected to saidremovable plate, consisting of a base part, and aperpendicular part in right angular relation therewith, together with a horizontal part in right angular relation with said perpendicular part and in parallel relation with the said base part, and having an angularly shaped extremity; a rearwardly and laterally bent hook forming a groove within the bend of said extremity; a thumb-lift forwardly bent from said horizontal part; the brace 32; a catch fixed to said removable plate, oppositely to said latch, andconsisting of a base part, and a perpendicular part in right angular relation therewith, together with a horizontal part in right angular relation with said perpendicular part and in parallel relation with the said base part; an angularly shaped extremity 25 to said horizontal part, which said groove of the latch engages with the said angularly shaped ex tremity 25 of the catch; and a holding spring clasp 21 fixed to said removable plate, all substantially as shown, for the purpose specified.
