HENRY H. GORDON, OF HUNTINGTON, NEW YORK.
TAILOR/S MEASURING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1911.
Application filed March 7, 1910. Serial No. 547,692.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY II. Gonnoiv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, Long Island, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tailors. Measuring Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tailors measuring devices.
It has especially for its object to facilitate taking measurements, as in fitting and making garments and to carry out said object in a simple, inexpensive and effective manner.
The invention consists of certain instrumentalities or features substantially as here inafter fully disclosed and defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention: Figure 1 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a broken or fractional opposite side View of the invention. Fig. 1 is a view of a figure of a person with the device applied thereto, as for use.
In carrying out my invention, I provide an upright member 1 which may be of suitable light material as the judgment may suggest, which is designed to be appliedto the front portion of a shoulder. Fitted removably upon the member 1 is a horizontal member or arm 2, having one end formed or terminating in a preferably rectangular keeper or loop 3 to receive said upright member, said loop or keeper having projecting from one end thereof a spring-catch et adapted to engage either of two notches 5, 6 in one edge of the upright member 1 according to the particular adjustment or application of the latter thereto. The member or arm 2 is preferably of spring-steel or resilient metal being adapted to be applied along the shoulder blade in practice, and to the outer end of said steel-spring member 2 is suitably secured a tape-measure 7 where by measurement may be taken from the front of the shoulder to the center of the back. The loop or keeper 3 has extending therefrom and laterally of, and beyond the spring member or arm 2, a stem 8 preferably circular in cross-section although it may be rectangular in crosssection for strengthening or reii'iforcing purposes. The upright member 1 has its lower end pointed as at 9 to cause it to suitably engage or puncture the vest (for instance) at the waist-line to aid the retention of said member in effective position, the member 2 being then disposed or placed under an arm (for instance the left) as in taking a measurement. The measurement or measurements thus taken by the use of the tape-measure 7 with the aid of the other members as described, are as to width.
In producing the length measurement, an additional tape-measure 10 is suitably applied to the opposite side of the loop or keeper 3 the connection therebetween being effected, preferably, by means of a flanged eyelet or pivot- 11, as clearly shown by Figs. 2 and 3. In taking the requisite measurement, the tape-measure 10 is applied over the shoulder, giving the length or shoulder measurement.
In applying the device for taking measurement for the right shoulder, the slide or loop 3, with adjunctive parts, is removed from the upright member 1 and reversed and re-applicd to the latter, the spring catch 4 being then inverted and engaged with the notch 5 of the member 1 for the retention of the slide or loop and adjunctive parts in effective position.
I claim:-
1. A tailors measuring device, comprising an upright member having spaced-apart notches near its upper end, a loop-member having a spring catch for engaging in either of said notches, said loop member having a resilient member extending horizontally therefrom, a tape-measure applied to said resilient member, and an additional tapemeasure applied to the opposite side of said loop member.
2. A tailors measuring device, comprising an upright member having a lower pointed end and having spaced-apart notches near its upper end, a loop member having a spring catch for engaging in either of said notches, said loop member having a resilient member extending horizontally therefrom, and a tape-measure applied to said resilient member.
3. A tailors measuring device, comprising an upright member having a lower pointed end, a loop member applied to said upright effective position upon said upright member and having a horizontal resilient member. s 10 member, also a nonresilient member pro- In testimony whereof I aflix my signajecting from. said loop member and having ture, in presence of tWo Witnesses.
said resilient member secured thereto, and a HENRY H. GORDON. tape-measure applied to said resilient mem- Vitnesses:
her at one end thereof, said loop member THOMAS YOUNG,
having means for effecting its retention in SELDEN S. GORDON.
