Be itknown that 1, MICHAEL PEROIVAL BRAZILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fresno, in the State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in match receptacles, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a slide and means for forcing the matches toward the slide so that the matches may be ejected.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this class with resilient means for forcing matches to one side of a receptacle. Said receptacle is further provided with a slide which is adapted to engage with the match in the receptacle and the receptacle being further provided with a cap or closure having a single opening whereby a single match may be ejected and ignited, if desired, upon the movement of the slide.

"With the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated the preferred embodimentof the improvement and in which Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a match box constructed in accordance with the present invention, the closure of the same being in its downward position. Fig. 2 is a similar sectional view, the closure being shown in its raised position. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the box. Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view upon the line 4-4: of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows.

The improved match receptacle 1 may be of any desired form and dimension, but as illustrated in the figures of the drawings, the same comprises a substantially rectangular member preferably constructed of metal. The receptacle 1 is provided with a closed bottom and open top and pivotally connected as at 2. At one of the ends of the said receptacle is a cap or closure 3. This closure 3 projects a suitable distance above the top of the box and may be secured thereon through the medium of a spring hinge or other desired attaching device. of is provided with an opening 4. This opening 4 may, if desired, have its wall serrated so that when a match from within the receptacle 1 is being ejected in a manner hereinafter described, the serrations will contact with the sulfur head of the match and ignite the same. The opening 4 is normally closed through the medium of a suitable sliding door 5. This door is preferably constructed of spring material and has a projecting headed stem 6 which is adapted to slide through a slot 7 provided in the top of the closure 3.

The front face of the receptacle 1 or that adjacent the opening 4. provided upon the closure 3 is beveled or inclined from its sides toward its center so as to provide a sub stantially centrally arranged passage way 8. The inner wall of the closure 3, adjacent its pivotal connection 2 with the receptacle 1, is provided with a downwardly projecting flattened member 9 and the same is pivotally connected with a sliding bar 10. This bar 10 is provided with spaced, substantially U-shaped ears 11 and the said ears are adapted to support the transversely arranged spring members 12. Each of these spring members 12 is pivotally connected with the wall of the receptacle opposite that of the passage way 8, and the same are provided with suitable resilient members which are adapted to exert pressure against the said members 12 so as to normally force the same downwardly to a substantially horizontal position. The sliding bar 10 has its sides cut away as at 18 and the metal thus provided is bent to form the U-shaped ears 11. The said cut away portions also provide for the raising of the bar 10 without interfering with the hinged connections of the members 12 to the rear wall of the receptacle.

The outer face of the receptacle 1 is provided for a suitable distance with a vertically arranged slit or cut away portion 1a and slidably mounted within this cut away port-ion is an ejector 15. Saidejector 15 is provided with an inwardly projecting stem 17 having an engaging or toothed face 16.

WVhen it is desired to fill the receptacle with matches, the closure 3 is raised to the position illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The sliding bar 10 by its oifset 11 raises the spring members 12 to a substantially vertical position when the matches may be inserted.

When the top or cap member 3 is closed upon the receptacle 1, the spring members 12 will be free to act upon the matches and will have a tendency to force the same within the passage way. The toothed portion 16 of the ejector l5 readily engages the match within the said passage way, but can not contact with the remaining matches within the receptacle. \Vhen a match is to be removed, the ejector is forced upwardly within the slot 14: so as to bring a match directly below the opening l. Through the opening 4, the sulfur head of the match contacting with the serrated walls readily ignites so that a lighted match may be delivered. when desired. It is, of course, to be understood that when the match is projected the door or closure 5 is held rear- Wardly so as to provide a ready passage.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided a simple, cheap and effective device for the purpose intended and while I have illustrated and described the further modifications of tne=invention, changes within the scope of the following claims may be resorted to when desired.

lVhat I claim is l. A receptacle, a hinged closure for the receptacle, said receptacle having one of its inner faces provided with a substantially U-shaped passage Way, a pair of spring members hingedly connected to the opposite side of the receptacle and adapted to exert pressure toward the passage way, a sliding bar having offset portions engaging the outer faces of the spring members, and a connection between the sliding bar and the closure, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a device for the purpose set forth, a receptacle, said receptacle having one of its sides provided with a substantially U- shaped passage way, a closure for the receptacle, said closure having its top provided with an opening arranged in alinement with the passage way, spring members hingedly connected within the receptacle, a sliding bar having offsets contacting with the outer faces of the spring members and a connection between the bar and the closure.

3. In a device for the purpose set forth, a receptacle, said receptacle being provided upon one of its inner faces with a substan- 5 tially U-shaped passage way, an ejector member slidably mounted within the passage way, spring members within the receptacle and extending longitudinally thereof, said members being each hingedly connected with the receptacle, a bar provided with ofi'set fingers adapted to normally engage the outward faces of the spring member, a closure for the receptacle, a connection between the sliding bar and the closure, said closure having an opening alining with the passage way of the receptacle, said opening having its wall serrated, and a door for the opening.
