To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER J. LA BELLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined sash lock and lift, the object being to provide a structure operable to release the sash in movement thereof to its open position.
In the drawings, forming a portion ofi this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views r-Figure 1 is a front eleva-` tion of my improved sash lock, and lift showing the same in its applied position on a window sash and casing, part-s being shown in section to clearly illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the movable locking members moved to their released positions.
Upon reference to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive of the drawings, it will be observed that my improved sash lock and lift consists of a casing 1 which may be of any suitable well known and desired design. As shown, the said casing is provided with flanges 2 which are secured to the window sash A by fastening devices 3. The casing is provided with an opening 4: which is disposed in line with an opening 5 in a keeper-plate 6 which is secured to the casing B, as illustrated. The casing is provided with companion pivot posts 7 on which are pivotally mounted locking dogs 8 each being provided with an arm 9 which extends upwardly and outwardly substantially at an obtuse angle to the pivot of the dog, a foot 10 and a nose 11. The feet are formed to provide hooked portions 12 which are operable to engage the member 13 of the keeper-plate. The arms 9 of the said locking dogs extend outwardly in opposite directions and through passages 14 of the head 15 of an actuating member 16 which is movable vertically in the easing. The member extends through the upper portion of the casing and is formed to provide a finger-receiving element 17 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. A spring 18 is coiled about the shank of the actuating member 16, and as illustrated, one end bears against the said head 1,5 and its opposite end bears against the top of the casing so that the spring exerts its tension against the head to cause the same to normally assume the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. This construction is such that through the just described engagement of the head 15 of the actuating member with the locking dogs, the said dogs will be normally held engaged with the keeper-plate to hold the sash against movement. The casing is formed to provide stops 19 for a purpose to be hereinafter explained. The members 21 are secured to the head 15. To further insure the engagement of the dogs with the keeper-plate I provide leaf springs 22 whose free ends bear against the nose portions 11 of the locking dogs, as shown. The stops 19 bear against the springs to insure a proper tension against the dogs. The members 21 are provided with guide lugs 11 which operate to engage the side walls of the casing 1 to insure an accurate sliding movement of the actuating member.
In operation of the herein described lift and lock, assuming it to be the desire of the operator to move the sash to an open position pressure is applied on the actuating member to move it against the tension of the spring 18 and also against the tension of the springs 22. In this movement of the actuating member the arm portions 9 of the locking dogs will be engaged by the walls of the slots 14 in the head 15 to rock such dogs and to move them out of locking engagement with the keeper-plate. The construction described is such that the actuating member is constructed not only as a means for releasing the dogs from the keeper-plate but as a. grip to enable the operator to conveniently manipulate the sash.

A sash lock comprising a pivoted dog mounted on the sash, a keeper located in the path of movement of the dog, the said dog having an arm which extends upwardly and outwardly substantially at an obtuse angle to said dog, and a sliding actuating member having an aperture receiving the arm In testimony whereof I ax my signature of the dog, said arm being slidable betveen in presence of two Witnesses.
