WRITING MATERIAL.

Be it known that I, MARIE F. C. STOCK- MANN, a citizen of Germany, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Writing Materials, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wr ting materials for the blind, and the mam object of my invention is to provide a writing material by means of which people deprived of sight may communicate between themselves or with people not deprived of sight, by writing the ordinary and usual script characters, etc. By using my improved writing material any one possessed of the ordinary knowledge of writing may be able to communicate with the blind by writing and using only the usual script characters.
My improvements have been described in a prior application of mine, filed January 12, 1909, Serial No. 471,862.
In its preferred form my improved writing material consists of a solid basic material, a drying material, water, an adhesive material, and a coloring material, so that a rather thick colored fluid material of contrasting color with the paper is produced, which, when deposited upon paper by a suitable pen will quickly dry and leave the characters raised upon the surface of the paper so that they are readily perceptible to the touch and the blind may easily read them.
More specifically, the preferred composition of my improved writing material is as follows: One part sugar, one part flour, one part water, one part mucilage and one part black ink. The flour acts as a basic material and the amount of sugar may be varied in order to vary the drying qualities of the material to different extents. The ink is added merely to color the material so that it will be of contrasting color and the writing may be easily read by those not blind. The mucilage is added in order to make the material suitably adhesive. It is found that sugar renders the material somewhat adhesive but not sufficiently so. Furthermore, the addition of mucilage prevents the material from cracking when dry and allows the paper upon which the writing is made to be folded or rolled.

The blind may easily read such writing, since the letters are very materially raised and very perceptible to the touch and the forms thereof may be readily made out by passing the fingers lightly over the same.
Writing with my improved material may be read quickly as well by the blind as by those still possessed of sight, who will read it in the ordinary manner. My improvements are therefore specially suitable to those who become blind in later life and who have not specific knowledge of the methods for writing for the blind which have hereto fore been commonly used. Such writing which has heretofore been used for the blind is not readable by those who are possessed of sight and read only in the ordinary man ner. It will also be evident that my improvements may be used for the purposes described in connection with other markings besides letters. For instance, my improved writing material is also applicable to the making of pictures, geometrical figures or other drawings to be used by the blind, or other persons in communicating with them.
My improved writing material is very stable and I have found by experience that it will keep for a year or more without deteriorating in any way. It will readily flow when a suitable pen is used and dries within a few minutes, so that it is specially advantageous for letter writing. As far as I am aware, I am the first to provide a writing material which, when deposited upon paper in the usual manner, Wlll leave the characters sufliciently raised so that they may be easily read by the blind.
Although I have described my improved material in great detail, nevertheless, I do not desire to be limited to the specific components and amounts thereof, since many variations therein may be made well within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully and clearly descrlbed my improvements, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s 1. A writing material, having in combination one part sugar, one part flour, one part water, one part mucilage and one part black ink.
