4UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FINDLEY ROBERT PAINE, OF ALBANY, NEW` YORK, ASSIGNOR 10 STANDARD OIL COMPANY OF NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
INDICATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 4, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FINDLEY ROBERT PAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indicating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to indicating devices, and the object of my invention is to provide a casting adapted to be used in connection with a receptacle containing a liquid, whereby the height of the liquid in the receptacle may be indicated when there is a minimum amount therein. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a longi tudinal section.
A receptacle, A, is adapted to receive a liquid, oil for lubricating purposes for eX- ample, and into the side of the receptacle, at the bottom thereof, I secure the threaded nipple, B, which is formed on the casting C.
The casting C is provided with a chamber into which a glass tube, D, may be placed, resting upon shoulders, ci, at the bottom of the chamber containing the tube, although I preferably place an elastic cushion, E, on the shoulders CZ, upon which the glass tube, D, rests, and on the top of the tube I place a like elastic cushion, F, against which the stopper, G, which is secured into the end of the chamber above the tube engages.
Beneath the chamber` into which the tube, D, is placed and connected therewith by the port, H, is the chamber, J, which connects with nipple, B, and therefore with the receptacle A. The chamber, J, beneath the tube is formed in reference to the bottom of the receptacle, so that it shall extend lower than the bottom of the receptacle A, and so that the tube, D, shall come down as far as the bottom of the receptacle A, and the opening, K, in the casting C, will extend down to a point very slightly above the bottom of the receptacle, A, whereby the con* tents of the receptacle, A will be indicated in the tube, D, when there is in the receptacle a sufficient quantity to more than cover the bottom of the receptacle.
In order to permit the contents of the receptacle, A, to readily enter the tube, D, I place an opening L in the stopper, G, to permit of the escape of air from the tube D.
For the purpose of enabling me to remove the contents from the casting, C, I prefer ably provide an opening M closed by a bolt, N, at the bottom of the casting beneath the tube D.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a receptacle adaptn ed to contain a liquid, with a casting provided with two chambers therein, one above the other; a glass tube in the upper of said chambers; an elastic cushion upon which said tube rests; a nipple formed on said casting and connecting with the lower of said chambers in said casting, said nipple adapted to engage with said receptacle at the bottom; and a stopper in the upper end of said casting.
2. The combination of a receptacle adapted to hold a liquid, with a casting provided with two chambers, one above the other; a stopper in the upperend of said casting; a glass tube in said upper chamber of said casting; and a nipple formed on the side of said casting slightly above the bottom thereof, adapted to be inserted in said receptacle at the bottom thereof; said nipple connecting with the lower chamber in said casting which lower chamber is below the bottom of the said receptacle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FINDLEY ROBERT PAINE.
