To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES -WILKIE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and. State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inhalers, of which the following is a specification, refercnce being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates generally to inhalers, particularly of the menthol type, and consists primarily in a combination device of this character that may be used either as an inhaler or as a menthol pencil, as may be desired.
The invention consists primarily in the construction of a combined inhaler and pen cil, in the peculiar construction of the in haler and the novel arrangement and com bination of parts, and in various details of construction as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a vertical central section through an inhaler embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the device in an operative position; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the containing section of the inhaler, partly broken away to illustrate its interior formation; Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of one of the caps or closures; and Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of the medicament.
I11 construction, my improved inhaler is composed preferably of four members or parts: a container proper A, caps B and C, adapted to be sleeved upon the container and to form in connection therewith the external casing of the inhaler, and the medicament D, preferably a block of menthol.
The container referred to is of tubular formation, having one end open, as indicated at D, and one or more air outlet openings or ports E formed in its opposite end.
F represents an annular rib or collar upon the retainer near its open end, against which the cap sections are adapted to abut when the appliance is closed.
F is an annular shoulder formed upon the interior of the container substantially midway between its ends, which forms a seat for a partition, as G. An opening H is formed within the peripheral portion of the partition, and extends entirely therethrough, and preferably at a point opposite the opening described and forwardly of the partition is a lateral air inlet port I for the container. Also, within the wall of the container body near the annular flange F is formed a longitudinal recess or depression, as J, forming in connection with an inturned lug or pro jection J upon the cap section C the stop means for limiting sliding movement of the cap.
D designates the medicament, preferably a menthol block, adapted to be seated upon the partition G and of a length to project beyond the open end of the container, so as to permit of its use as a pencil. The block described is formed preferably with two oppositely disposed longitudinal grooves aand Z), which when the block is in position within the container are arranged opposite the opening H and the inlet port I.
The cap B is adapted to seat against the rib or collar F, and when so seated to close the air inlet port I within the container and to contact at its end with the closed end portion of the container, as indicated in Fig. 1. This cap has a central aperture L formed in its closed end, constituting an air outlet port, and this port when the cap is seated as described is adapted to be closed by a projecting portion M upon the container body.
In use, when it is desired to employ the device as a pencil, merely the cap 0 is removed, leaving exposed the menthol block, which may be used in the ordinary manner. For use as an inhaler, the cap C is replaced and the complementary cap or closure member B drawn out longitudinally to expose the air inlet port I, the sliding movement being limited by the stop mechanism described. On inhaling, the air enters the port I, passes downwardly around the lower end and upwardly upon the opposite'side of the menthol block through the partition, and out through the ports E and air outlet port -I. By passing the air currents entirely around the block as set forth, they are charged to a maximum degree with the medicament. To seal the inhaler, it is merely required to slide the cap B inwardly to the limit of its movement, when both the outlet port L and the air inlet port will be closed.
W'h at I claim as my invention is,
1. In a combined menthol pencil and inhaler, the combination with a container open at one end, having an outlet opening at its opposite end, and an intermediate lateral air inlet, of a transverse partition within the container arranged inwardly beyond the inlet opening and having an opening extending therethrough, a menthol block Within the containerprovided with a port or passage leading from the inlet opening around the block to the opening in the partition, and closures for the container ends.
2. In a combined menthol pencil and in,
the container, and an iinperforate removable cap for the open end of the container.
