To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of TeXas, have invented a new and useful Level, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide novel means for holding the vials of a level adjustably in the stock of the level.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a perspective of the plate whereby the vials are carried; and Fig. 4 is a fragmental plan, parts being broken away.
The stock of the level is denoted by the numeral 1, the stock being provided, adjacent its ends, with openings 3. Apertures 4 extend transversely through the stock, and communicate with the openings 3. In one edge 6 of the stock there is a groove 5 communicating with the apertures 4. There is a slit 9 in the stock 1, substantially parallel to the side faces 7 and 8 of the stock, this slit 9 merging into the apertures 4, and into the groove 5.
The invent-ion further includes a'plate 10, ordinarily seen to best advantage in Fig. 3. The plate 10 is fashioned along two of its end edges into rolls 11 and 13, one of the rectangularly disposed edges of the plate being fashioned into a similar roll 12. The vials 15 of the level are disposed in the rolls, 11, 12 and 13, and are maintained in place therein by means of cement 16 or the like. There are openings 14 in the rolls, disclosing the vials 15. The plate 10 is adapted to be slid into the slit 9, the roll 12 registering in the groove 5 and the rolls 11 and 13 registering in the apertures 4. In order to steady the plate 1() in the slit 9, a resilient member 10a is introduced between the plate 10 and the stock 1 of the level. As will be clearly seen in Fig. 1, when the plate 10 is in place in the stock 1, certain of the level vials 15 will be disposed in the openings 3.
There is an opening 18 through the stock 1, this opening being in alinement with an opening 25 in the plate 10. There is a depression 21 in the face 7, about the opening 18, the face 8 beingprovided with a similarly positioned opening or depression 22. A Washer '23 is placeduin the depression 21,

The rolls 12, 13 and 11 are spaced from the stock 1, and by loosening the screw 19, the plate 10 may be rotated slightly, so as to change the positions of the vials 15, an adjustment of the vials being thus secured.
Obviously, the rolls 11, l2 and 13 constitute holders for the level vials 15; and the screw 19 and the nut 2O constitute a securing device for holding' the plate 10 and the vials 15 adjustably in the stock.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a spirit level, a stock having a slit merging along two of its edges into transverse apertures in the stock, and along a third edge merging into a supercial groove in the stock; a plate located in the slit and having tubular vial-holders along certain of its edges, to register in the apertures and in the groove; and means for securing the plate in the slit.
2. In a spirit level, a stock having transverse apertures therethrough, and a groove in one of its edge faces, between the apertures, there being a transverse slit in the stock, merging into the apertures and into the groove, and disposed substantially parallel to one of the side faces of the stock; a plate dispo-sed in the slit; vials secured to three edges of the plate and located respectively in the apertures and in the groove; and means for holding the plate and the vials adjustably in the stoel 3. In a spirit level, a stock having transverse apertures therethrough, and a groove in one of its edge faces, between the apertures, there being a transverse slit in the stock, merging into the apertures and into the groove; a plate disposed in the slit and having three of its edges terminated in rolls located respectively in the apertures and in the groove; vials in the rolls; means for anchoring the vials in the rolls; and a securing device extended' through the stock and the plate, to hold the plate and the vials adjustably in the stock.
4. In a spirit level, a stock having transversely arranged cylindrical bores and a groove and provided with a transverse slit merging into said bores and the groove, a sheet metal plate having a plurality of rolls to receive spirit glasses and removably lo cated in the slit and the bores and means whereby the plate may be anchored in place or allowed to move for adjustment.
5. In a spirit level, a. stock, a sheet metal member having three of its side portions terminating in rolls with spirit glasses therein said member with its glasses being removably embedded in the stock, and means for securing the member in its adjusted position, and plastic material for anchoring the spirit glasses in the rolls.
6. In a spirit level, a stock having t-ransversely arranged bores and a groove in one ol' its edge faces arranged between the bores, said stock having a transversely arranged slit parallel with the broad faces of the stock and merging into the bores and the groove, a sheet metal member having three of its edge portions provided with spirit glasses and embedded in said bores, the slit and the groove, and means extending through the stock for securing the member in its adjusted position.
7. In a spirit level, a stock having transversely arranged bores and a groove in one of its edge faces arranged between the bores, said stock having a transversely arranged slit parallel with the broad faces of the stock and merging into the bores and the groove, a sheet metal member having three of its edge portions terminating in rolls, spirit glasses received by said rolls, means for anchoring the glasses in the rolls, said sheet metal member and its rolls being removably embedded in the bores, the groove and the slit, and means extendingthrough the stock and the member, for securing the member in its adjusted position.
