Description

3.1. M. 00x.. SPIRIT LEVEL. APPLICATION FILEDJUNE19. 1916- Patented July 17, 1917.
SEBERON J'. 1W. COX, F BRISTOW, OKLAHOMA.
SPIRIT-LEVEL.
Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spirit-Levels; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to spirit levels and has special reference to a spirit level of improved character arranged to act both as a level and clineometer, the. device being arranged to indicate all angles from zero at the horizontal, to ninety degrees at the perpendicular.
One principal object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified construction for devices of this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide means of improved character whereby the level bulb will be held in,
position to be exposed from both sides of the level, the bulb being of greater arcuate length than three-quarters of a ,circle and being graduated throughout.
A third important object of the inventlon is to provide means for holding the bulb in position which can be released to permit adjustment of the bulb so that the zero point is at the correct position.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent'the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accom anying. drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views; and
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a level constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22- of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the bulb or tube removed from the level.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the stock, with all of the parts removed.
In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there has been disclosed a stock of the ordinary rectangular form, the body of this stock being indicated at 10. This stock is provided with oppositely dis- Speciflcation of Letters latent.
Patented July it, rail '3.
Application filed m. 1a, 1910. Serial No. 104,587.
13 have lengths greater than 135 degrees,
and the tube is closed by the usual plug 15 and cement 16.
The tube has its sides beyond the faces of the web 12 and on each side of this web there is provided a cover plate 17 having an. arcuate opening 18 therein opposite the tube. The edges of this opening press lightly against the tube as seen in Fig. 2, and, if desired, may be beveled to fit such tube and prevent too great pressure. These two cover plates 17 are held together by means of a bolt 19 provided with a butterfly nut 20 which is seated wholly in one of the recesses 11. The usual washers 21 are provided between the head of the bolt and adjacent plate and the butterfly nut 20 and the adjacent plate 17. One of the plates 17 is preferably secured fixedly to the stock 10 by means of suitable screws 22.
Tn assembling the device, is put into position. The bubble tube 14 is then placed in the recess and the other plate 17 put in position. The bolt is then passed extending slightly through the central openings of said plates the fixed plate I the bubble is exactly at zero when the stock is placed on a horizontal surface. Then when the plates are tightened together the tube can not readily move and any surface upon which the stock is placed will have its 4 angular variation from the horizontal indicated by the graduation on the tube opposite the center of the bubble. It is to be observed that this graduation may be readily observed because of the fact that light passes freely from one side to the other of the tube through the openings 18 so that the graduations on the tube can be seen by means of the transmitted light.
It will be obvious that in case the tube becomes displaced or broken it may be re placed in position by loosening the nut 20,
7 is claimed as new, is
and if broken may be replaced by a new a tube by simply removing one of plates 17.
There'has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purposespecified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be' made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof; It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is Wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what the cover A level comprising a stock having arf arcuate opening therethrough and having circular recesses concentric to the opemng,
and provided with rabbets at their inner ends whereby to form a web centrally of the thickness of the stock, an arcuate level tube mounted in the .opemng and having a cir-.
cular length greater than 135, a pair of plates seated in'said rabbets each provided with an arcuate slot wherein one side of the tube is-seated, a bolt extending through the plates centrally thereof, and anut on the bolt to lock the stock together, the tu thereon.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
