Description
M. A. DAVl SPIRIT LEVEL Feb. 13, 1951 Filed April 15, 1950 I. Gm
f w m VENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 13, 1951 UNITED TiSTAiTfES iPATENT SOFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to tools and more particularly spirit levels.
One of the objects of this invention resides in the provision of a spirit level adapted to indicate all angles of a circle.
Another object of this invention resides in the particular construction of the opposed sections of the spirit level casing.
Another object of this invention resides in the particular construction of the liquid tube of the spirit level unit.
A further object of this invention resides in the combination of the liquid tube and casing.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter more particularly set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim and, although this disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to resort to such departures therefrom as come within the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application;
Fig. 1 is a side view of the spirit level.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken approximately on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an inner end view of one section of the casing with the liquid tube disposed therein.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the other section of the casing.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the liquid tube.
In the present illustration of this invention the numeral 5 designates, in general, a mechanics spirit level which consists of a base 6 formed of suitable material and provided with an enlarged opening 1 having an annular rib 8 formed on its periphery inwardly of the opposite sides of the base.
Secured within the aforesaid opening 1 is a substantially disc shaped spirit level unit 9 formed of transparent plastic or other suitable material into companion sections ID and II having flanges l2 and i3 retained against opposite sides of said rib by a screw l4 preferably connecting the sections together at their centers.
Although the spirit level unit is herein shown as being set inwardly of the sides of the base, it may be disposed therein with its opposite sides coinciding with those of the base.
Formed in the inner surfaces of the aforesaid sections adjacent their peripheries l5 and iii are ends of liquid within the tube relative to zero marks Z scribed onopposite sides of the base outwardly of the aforesaid enlarged opening therein.
Formed on the inner surface of the companion sections inwardly of the annular grooves therein are circumferentially arranged graduations 22 and 23 with which other graduations 24 and 25 formed in the grooves l7 and I 8 radially align. The circle occupied by the graduations 22 is further divided by major graduations 25.
Circumferentially arranged on opposite sides of the aforesaid zero marks outwardly of the enlarged opening therein and spirit level unit are other degree marks 21 which, while herein shown as disposed at forty five and ninety degrees about a circle, may be otherwise disposed.
With the liquid tube disposed between the transparent sections and having opposite ends of the liquid therein disposed in alignment with the zero marks on the base while resting on a horizontal plane, longitudinal tilting of the base will move the graduated sections around the liquid to obtain or determine various angles of work operated on and through the provision of the transparent elements forming the spirit level unit, the graduations are easily read therethrough from either side of the same.
With this invention fully described, it is :manifest that a spirit level is provided whereby accurate calculation of angles can be determined and through the particular construction and arrangement of the spirit level unit, assemblage and adjustment of the same in the base can be accomplished by unskilled labor with use of a single tool.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A spirit level of the character set forth, the combination of a base having an enlarged hole therein, an annular rib formed on the wall of said hole, companion transparent discs having opposed annular grooves formed in their inner surfaces adjacent their peripheries, said grooves being of substantially semi-circular configuration 3 in cross section and communicating with opposed recesses extending radially therefrom, annular flanges formed on the peripheries of said discs and bearing against opposite sides of the aforesaid annular rib, a transparent ring shaped liquid tube seated in the opposed grooves, a radially extending lug formed on the outer periphery of the ring shaped tube and seated in the aforesaid recesses, a screw securing the disc shaped sections together and flanges thereof against the annular rib in the hole of the base, graduations formed on the inner surfaces of the disc shaped sections adjacent the aforesaid grooves therein and aligning with other graduations in the grooves, and graduations disposed on opposite surfaces of the base adjacent the hole therein.
