HAT-PIN FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES Hman, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Uhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Iat-Pin Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hat-pin fastener, the primary object of said invention being to effectually retain the hat-pin in position against loss or displacement.

A further obj ect is to so construct the device and arrange the various parts of the same as to be neat and attractive when placed in position on a hat.

lWith these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combina` tion and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that the changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing` from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view showing the various parts assembled and attached to a hat, Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the parts removed, Fig. 3 a view showing the devices separated from each other, Fig. t av slightly modified form of the device, and Fig. 5 a detail view of the securing devices employed in the modified form.

In the drawings: 10 designates a plate provided with a plurality of perforations arranged adjacent its edge portion, said plate having extending therefrom at an angle, the hollow tubular portion 11. As shown in the drawings, the plate 10 is se-V cured 'to the band of the hat, the portion 11 extending toward the center of the same.

The member 12 consists of a substantially cone shaped device, the apex of which is arranged slightly oif-center, the portion of said cone adjacent the said apex being provided with the slits 12 which form a resilient gripping means. The member 12 is provided with an annular groove 13 which is arranged at a point below the termination of the slits 12. In assembling the device the apex of the member 12 is inserted within the portion 11, said portion 11 being provided with a flange 11 which is adapted Specification of Letters Patent.

to spring into the groove 13 thereby holding the members together. This structure is arranged upon the left hand side of the hat. The plate 14 which is adapted to be secured to the opposite side of the hat, is provided with perforations adjacent its edge portion and a conical extension 15, the apex of which is split in the same manner as the member 12. 'Ihe plate 14 is also provided with an annular groove 16, by means of which the cylindrical member 17 is secured to the plate 141-, said member 17 being provided at its open end portion with a spring flange 18 adapted to enter said groove, thereby holding the said member 17 at the same angle to the plate 111 as the mem` ber 15. The end portion of the member 17 being provided with an opening arranged adjacent its edge portion and in alinement with the apex of the member 15.

It will be seen that when a pin is inserted through the member 15, the point of the same will be deflected by the walls of the conical member 15 and carried through the opening 18 into the member 17. The pin is then forced into the enlarged end ofthe member 12 which is arranged on the Opposite side of the hat. The pin then passes through, and between the spring fingers caused by the slots 12 and enters the tubular portion 11 of the plate 10, thence passing out through the crown of the hat.

It will be seen from the foregoing that the pin will be securely held against movement either lateral or longitudinal, not only by the spring fingers formed on the members 12 and 111 but by the alinement of the openings in the said members. It will also be noted that the device will not only eifectually retain the hat pin against movement, but such an arrangement will prevent a multiplicity of pin holes which tend to disfigure the hat and materially injure the same.

It will be noticed that all the parts may be very cheaply constructed and economically manufactured as well as easily placed in position within the hat.

What is claimed is:

l. A device of the class described, comprising a plurality of plates arranged at opposite sides of a hat, one of said plates being provided with a cylindrical open ended member arranged at an angle With the same, said member terminating in a flange, a conical member provided near its end portion with an annular groove adapted to be engaged by lsaid flange, thereby securely holding said conical member Within said cylindrical extension, the plate arranged at the opposite side of the hat being provided With a conical extension, the end portion of which is slotted and has formed thereon an annular groove, a cylindrical member adapted to be inserted upon the end port-ion of said conical member, said cylindrical member being provided with an annular iange adapted to rest Within the annular groove thereby holding the tWo members together.

2. A device of the class described consist- -ing of a plurality of securing devices arranged at opposite sides of a hat, one of said devices consisting of a plate provided With a hollow offset portion arranged at an angle With the plate, a cone shaped member resiliently engaged by the edge portion of the offset portion, the apex of said cone shaped member being slotted to form a resilient gripping means, the other member consisting of a plate provided with a conical extension, the apex of Which is slotted and a member provided Withan opening adapted to resiliently engage said conical member.
