Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, JOHN M. SMrri-I, citizen of the United States, residing at Poplarville, in the county of Pearl River and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in oar locks and particularly to an improvement in that class of oar lock shown in Patent 474,194, patented May 3rd, 1892.
The objects of the invention are to provide an oar lock for small boats which while permitting' the manipulation of the oar willv lock it in its place and prevent the loss of the oars if the boat is capsized or in a heavy sea.
For a full understanding' of my inv-ention reference is to be had to the following de scription and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is an end elevation of my im proved oar lock, Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal section, the shank of the oar being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 5 is a view of the oar, and Fig. (3 is a detailed view showing the lock and pin.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In these figures 2 designates a casting secured in position to the gunwale of a boat by means of clamps 3 or in any suitable manner. 4 designates uprights upon the casting 2 between which is pivoted a bearing block 5 having thereon an upwardly projecting pivot pin G.
Itotatably mounted upon the pivot pin G is the oar lock proper, consisting of upper and lower sections 7 and 8. The upper section 8 forms a cover which sets down over the lower section and closes the same and completes the lock. The cover is hinged at 7 to the section 7 and the cover is held closed upon the section 7 by means of the key 9.
The interior portions of the sections 7 and 8 of the lock are cylindrical and slightly tapering and adapted to receive the shank of the oar 10. The interior faces of the sections 7 and 8 are formed with internal annular grooves ll and the shank of the oar is formed with a plurality of rings or annular ribs 12 adapted when the sections 7 and 8 are closed together to t in the grooves 11. It will thus be seen that when the sections of the oar lock are closed upon each other and upon an oar, that the oar will be held from any longitudinal movement relative to the oar lock, but may be turned within the oar lock while the oar lockv as a whole, has of course, a pivotal bearing upon the pin 6, and the supports 5 have a pivotal bearing upon the pin 4. Thus the oar has perfect freedom of motion in all necessary directions, but at the same time cannot be removed from the lock until the cover section 8 of the lock has been opened.
In practice the part 2 is attached to boat by means of the clamps 3. The cover section 8 of the row locks are opened and the oar placed with the ribs l2 in the grooves 11. After the oars are in place, the covers are closed and secured by the use of the key 9, the oars are then ready for use. The oars when in use cannot chafe or wear in the locks because they are prevented from any longitudinalmotion, any wear coming upon the rings 12 which may be made of leather or other like material and replaced whenever desired. The lock has no lost motion either in pulling or backing, and while the oar is permitted to have every necessary movement, yet itis retained in place from any chance of accidental displacement.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
An oar lock comprising a base plate havj ing upwardly projecting spaced ears, a support pivoted between said ears and having a flat upper face and a pivot pin projecting upwardly therefrom, an oar lock section having a tapering semicircular upper face and a flat lower face, the section being formed with an opening for the reception of the pivot pin and being adapted to rotate therearound, the semicircular inner face of the section being provided with transverse grooves having the sides perpendicular to the face of the section, said grooves being spaced from each other and from the end faces of the oar lock section, a covering sec tion hinged to the first named section and having a tapering semicircular inner face formed with grooves in alinement with the grooves in the rst named section and havand said rings heilig entirely housed Within the sections when the sections lare closed.
