SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,476, dated December 6, 1887.
Application filed July 26, 1887. Serial No. 245,354. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS OROURKE JAMESON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jib-Hanks, of which'the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in j ib-l1anks, and has for its object to provide a means for quickly and readily attaching and detaching the jibs to their stays, and wherein the hank will be simple in construct-ion, conveniently applied, and reliable in use, and wherein, further, the hank may be advantageously applied to other portions of the riggmg.
' The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as Will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a representation of a portion of a jib and jibstay connected by my improved hank. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the-same enlarged, taken through line 00 m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the hank with the cap covering the locking device removed.
In carrying out my invention I will describe the same as applied to a jib and jib-stay, but do not limit myself to that application.
A represents a sail denominated a jib, and B the stay therefor. To the luff ofthe sail, just within the leech-rope (J, a series of eyelets, D, are inserted in the ordinary manner.
E represents the hanks, which are made in two semi-annular parts, hinged to, each other at one end in such a manner that the hinged part of the hank may have a smooth inner surface to slide along the stay B. Upon the free ends ofthe hank-sections disks F F are formed in such position as to be parallel with'each other, when the said free ends are closed upon the sail, and the disks F and F are designed to be made of such a size as to cover the eyelets D in the sail A. Upon one ofthe disks, F, a pin, G, is attached or made integral centrally the inner face, which, when the hank is closed, passes through the sail'eye into and contiguous faces of the disks to the eyelets to complete the circle and prevent any chafing of the leech. The disk F is provided with a central recess, d, and within said recess a semicircular dog, at, is held by a shank, d attached thereto, passing out from the disk at the outer end, and provided with an enlarged head or knob, e, as shown in Fig. 8, whereby the inward movement of the dog is limited. To retain the dog in a given position in the recess,a spring, 6', is passed through the shank and made to hear at each end against the walls of the recess (1.
In operation, the hank having been passed around the stay, the pin is entered the aperture of the disk F, and as the grooved portion of the pin enters the recess d, the point of the pin, which is tapering, having previousl y lifted the spring actuated dog, the said dog will drop into the said pin-groove and constitute a lock. To remove the hank the knob e is grasped, and the dog thereby withdrawn from the groove in the pin. The hanks may then be opened outward upon the hinge and detached from the sail.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hank constructed, substantially as herein shown and described, in two semi-annular parts, hinged to each other at one end, having opposing disks integral with their other ends, one disk provided with an integral grooved pin adapted to pass through the opposing disk, which disk is providedwith acentral interior recess, and a spring-actuated dog adapted to enter the groove of said pin, substantially as shown and described.
2. A hank consisting of two semi-annular parts, hinged to each other at one end, provided with opposing disks F F, the disk F having attached thereto an inwardly-projecting pin, G, having a shoulder, 11, and annular groove b, and tapering extremity, the disk F being provided with a transverse aperture,

3. The combination,with a sail and the stay for said sail, of the hank E, formed in two semiannular parts, hinged to each other at one end, having opposing disks F F integral with their IO outer ends, the disk F being provided with an integral grooved pin, G, adapted to pass through the opposing disk F, which disk is provided with a central interior recess, (1, and a spring-actuated dog, d, adapted to enter the groove in said pin, substantially as shown and 15 described.
