JOHN G. IIOLAUGHLIN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO UI TDEBWOOD TYPEVJRITER COMPANY, OF YORK, N.
Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
TYPE-W'RITING MACI-IINE.
To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN C. Molmucn- LIN, a cltizen of the United, States, residing in Jerse: City, in the county of' Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain a new and useful Improvements 11.1 Type Writing Machines, of-wlnch the following is freely, bydirecting the bottom end of the lower ends-of the guides.
' sheet over the floors of the gages,to which end, 1 provide the shelfwith an elevation or ridge OfSll Cll' height as to support the bottom end of the sheet above and direct t over the In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspectiveshowing one form of the invention applied to the platenframe of an Underwood machine. Fig. 2 is a sectional view.
A platen 1 has an axle 2 ends 3 of a platen frame. Said-ends are connected by a papershelf t usually having a head 5 on which are mounted guides 6 having upstanding ledges 6 forming gages between. which the side edges of the worksheet 7 advance. Said guides 6 overlie the shelf and their. lower ends approach the" lower edge of the'shelf. Usually such guides are adjustable along theshelf 4:, and the floor portions of rated from the paper Fig. 2. p
The leading end of the sheet is dropped between the rear feed rolls 9 and the platen shelf t, as seen at' 1, and as the platen is turned, the" sheet isadvanced, it being held against skewing by the guides 6 until the bottom edge ofthe sheet leaves the lower ends of said guides. Thereafter, when the sheets are backed up for corrections or other purposes, the bot- Specification of Letters Iatent.

toni ends of the sheets 7 ride onto a ridge or rib 10 extending across the shelf 4 below the lower ends 'of said vguides 6. The ridge 10 elevates the bottom ends of the sheets above the lower ends or floors of the guides, and as the paper con'fzinue's to feed backwardly, directs the sheets upwardly over said lower ends. v
The upper edge 11 of the ridge adjacent 'tlie'lowerends of the guides 6 merges at a slight incline into that part of the'shelf overlapped by the guides, to enable the lea'ding ends of the sheets when placed inthe machine to glide easily thereover. The longitudinal part of the shelf between the-ridge 10 and the head 5 forms, in effect, a depression along which the guides are adjustable. Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1.- In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame including a paper shelf, a platen and a paper guide for the side edgeof a and extending, over the shelf, of means to guide the bottom end of the sheet, when fedbackwardly, over the lower end of the paper guide. 2.' In at'ypewriting machine, the combina-' tion with a platen'frame including a paper shelf, a platen, feed rolls, and a paper guide mounted on. and extending down upon the shelf, of 'a ridge between the lower end of the guide and the rear feed roll to direct the bottom end of the sheet, when fed backwardly, over the lower end of .the'paper guide.
tion with a platen, aplaten frame havinga sheet, said guide mounted on' 3. In a typewriting machine, the combina paper shelf. and a paper guide mounted on lf, of alridge pressed in and forming an integral part of thepaper shelf below the lower end of the paper guide, to support the bottom end of the sheet, when fed backwardly, and direct it over the lower 'end of the guide.
4i. In a typewrlting machine, the combination with a platen,.-a platen frame including a paper shelf, and a paper guide mountedon.
the shelf, the lower edge of the shelf being ofiset in line withthelower end of the'paper paper guide, the lower end 6f which lie: in I'guide to direct the bottom ends of the sheets the. depressionout of line withthe' bottom over the lower end ofv the guide, when said edge of the shelf;
. sheets are fed' backwardly. JOHN G. MoLAUGHLIN.
