PAPER HOLDER AND FEEDER FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.

Be 'it known that 1, ROBERT W. SHADE, a citizen of the United Statesof America, residing at Shippensburg, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lmprot ements in Paper Holders and Feeders for Type-Writing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact desciption of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in paper holders and feeders for type-writing machines; and the object is to provide a convenient,- simply-constructed, and certainlyacting' device or machine wherein a supply of blank sheets of paper will be held and kept, so that one of the-sheets will be presented and fed to the action of a type-writing machine when desired or required.

The invention consists in the novel construction of parts and their combination, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

I have fully and clearly illustrated the invent-ion in the accompanying drawin gs,-where- 1n- Figure l is a front view in elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line X X of Fig. 1 and showing the device in its relation to the platen and feed-roller of a type-writing machine. Fig. 3 is a detail front view, the front plate of the holder being removed. Fig. 4is a rear elevation showing the means for attaching the device to a type-writing machine. Fig. 5 is an end view.

A designates the paper-holding receptacle, made of any material suitable for the purpose and composed enerally of end pieces 1 1, duplicates in form and construction, a back plate or side 3, and a front plate or side 5. The end pieces 1 1 at theirlower end portions 2 2 are formed circular anddirected forward, so that the curved or rounded lower portion of the back plate may be secured to them and be held in its relation to the feed-roller. The back plate or side 3 of the receptacle is suitably secured to or between the end pieces 2 2 and has its lower end portion 4 curved forward and extending under and adjacent to the feed-roller, with the edge or end substantially in alinement with the vertical radii of the feed-roller and so that a suitable opening or space is formed through which the paper from the receptacle may be drawn and fed, as indicated in the drawings. The end pieces 1 and back plate or side 3 of the paper-holder box may be made of wood. The front plateor side 5 of the paper-receptacle is preferably made of sheet metal having its ends secured to the end pieces by nails or screws, as indicated, and its lower portion 6 directed outward in a curved contour over the feed-roller, as shown, and terminating in a series of teeth or tongues 7, extended downward and adapted to lie or rest with their ends slightly in advance of the bite between the feed-roller and platen of a type-writing machine, as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, so that a sheet of paper discharged from the holder will have its lower edge carried against the teeth and directed between the said feed-roller and platen to be regularly fed to the type-writing machine. In the paperholder are two or more guide and tension tongues 9 9 ,consisting of suitable metal strips fastened to the back plate of the holder and curved down in alinement with the curved bottom of the back plate and extending under and bearing against the under face of the feed-roller, so that but one sheetof the paper in the holder at a time can be presented for the action of the roller and carried out to the machine. In the circular parts of the end pieces of the holder are formed suitable ger-piece 11, secured to the end of one of the journals of the roller, which is extended for that purpose.

On the front plate of the paper-box is secured an envelop box or receptacle to hold envelops for convenient use. To the back plate or sideof the paper-box are suitably secured supports .12 12, formed with eyes or apertures at their upper ends, through which screws 13 are projected, and clamping-nuts 14 are provided to hold the supportsin position to the box or paper-holder. The lower ends of the supports are bent forward, as at 15, extending under the curved bottom of the box and then straight down, as at 16, the end portions being adapted to fit in the sockets of a type-writing-machine frame, wherein the socket-pieces of the paper-plate are ordinarily held in a well-known manner. It will be perceived that other constructions of supports may be substituted for those shown and described, so that the device may be operatively connected and attached to any type-writing machine.

The uses and operation of the device are asfollows: The device is set upon the typewriting machine, so arranged thereon that the paper-guide fingers of the front plate will guide and direct a sheet of paper into. the bite of the feed-roller of the machine. A package of blank paper sheets is then depositedin the receptacle, when the lower edges of the blank sheets will rest on the curved tension-tongues in-the bottom of the box and the edge portion of the front sheet resting against the feed-roller and be subject to, be carried out when the feed-roller is rotated by the bite-between the tension-tongues and the roller until the sheet is moved into contact with the fingers on the front plate, which on .further movement of the sheet direct it, be-

tween the rollers of the type-writing machine subject to the usual manipulation and action of the machine. The sheets are thus fed in succession until the supply is exhausted.

The device is particularly usefuland convenient in officeswhere many-short lettersor messages are being copied on a machine and for the purpose especially of writing offtelegraph messages, as no time is lost; in placing the sheets of paper in the: machine, but as one is used another is ready for being written upon.

What I claim is- 1. A-paper. holder and feed device for typewriting machines, comprisingasuitable receptacle or box to hold the paper, a feed-roller journaled in the bottom of the box, tensiontongues in the bottom of the box and arranged to bear on the under face ofthe feedroller, and tongues or fingers on the lower edge of the frontside of the paper-holder for directing a sheet of paper to the feed-rollers of a type-Writingmachine.

2. A paper holder and feed device for atypewriting machine, comprising asuitable-receptacle or box tohold-v thepaper, .the end pieces of'the box at their-lower endsbei'ng rounded and'directedforward andv the bottom portion of the back plate of the box beingcurved and directed forward, tension-tongues-secured: in the bottom of the box and under the feedroller, a feed-roller journalfed in the rounded ends of the box and extending the length of the box, and guide-fingers projecting; from the front lower edge ofthe receptacle.

3. The paper holder and feed device for a type-writing machine as herein, described, consisting of a-rectangular paper-box having acurved bottom, tension-tonguessecured in the bottom of the box, a feed-roller journaled in the bottom of the box, a metal front plate to the box formed with a curved' lower portion overlying the feed-roller. andhavin g teeth or guide-tongues on the lower edge ofthe said curvedportiomand suitable supports to connect the box to a type writing machine.
