GQGORNWALL." LOCK FOR PUMP HANDLES. APPLICATION FILED 001:. 29, '1910.
2 3 Patented Mar. 7, 1911.
IINIIEE %'IA'IE% PATENT OFFIQE.
CHARLES CORNWALL, OF SALEM, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE DEMING COMPANY, OF SALEM, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
LOOK FOR PUMP-HANDLES.
Application filed October 29,
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES CORNWALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks for Pump-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to looks and latches, but more particularly stated, to a special form of lock for securing together two relatively fixed and movable members, being designed more especially for looking a rotary pump handle against rotation. The invention, however, is equally well suited for similarly securing pump handles which are vertically actuated, and also for use in other connections where it is desired to interlock fixed and movable elements both rotary and reciprocating.
As a further object my invention contemplates the production of a lock for the purposes mentioned and similar uses, which is peculiarly simple and inexpensive to manufacture, durable in construction, and efficient in its operation.
The invention will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims following.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this application and whereon like numerals refer to like parts in the several figures: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention as applied to a rotary pump; 2 is an end view of parts shown by Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 Fig. 1.
Reference being had to the drawings and numerals thereon, 1 indicates a pumpin this instance a rotary pump2 a pump stock. and 3 the pump handle. The said stock 2 is provided with a side boss 1 having a plane face 5, and the crank or handle 3 is perforated as at 6 by a rectangular opening, as best shown by Fig. 2. To the said boss 4 Specification of Letters Patent.
1910. Serial No. 589,730.
is pivotally connected a bolt member 7 slotted longitudinally as at 8 and having a flat bearing surface, same being retained in psition, as best shown in Fig. 3, by a fiat headed pivot-pin 9 which in turn is secured in place by a small key-pin 10 passing through the boss 4 and resting in a groove 11 formed in the periphery of said pivotpin; while at its opposite or outer end this bolt member 7 is perforated as at 12 to receive the shackle 13 of an ordinary padlock 14.
This being my invention in its preferred form of construction and arrangement, its use and operation are quite evident and need not be herein particularly dwelt upon. It may be noted, however, that the locking member 7 when not in use naturally gravitates into a vertical position upon its supporting pin 9 at the side of stock 2, where it hangs without a possibility of accidental interference with the pump handle, whether of the rotary or oscillatory type. When, however, the invention is to be used as the means of looking a pump handle against unauthorized use. the bolt member 7 is first retracted to the limit of slot 8, then projected into and through slot 6 in handle 8, whereupon the locking operation is completed by introduction of the shackle 13 of an ordinary padlock 1 1. as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a pump the combination with a pump stock and pump handle, of a locking bolt vertically and horizontally slidable upon the pump stock and adapted to be projected transversely across the path of the pump handle, and means for retaining said bolt in its projected posit-ion, substantially as described.
2. In a pump the combination with a pump stock and apertured pump handle, of a locking bolt slidably mounted upon the pump stock adapted to be projected transversely through the aperture in said pump handle, and a lock at the outer end of said locking bolt for securing it to said handle, outer end of said bolt when projected as substantially as described. aforesaid, substantially as described. 10
3. In a pump the combination with a In testimony whereof I affix my signature,

adapted to be vertically elevated and hori- Vfitnesses: zontally projected into the path of said E. J. PEEK, pump handle, and means for locking the W. G. BUTLER.
