To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .l'lARRY J. SCHAUM- 'tnrrini, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flask- Guides; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to flask guides and has for its object to provide a flask guide and pin which will positively prevent any shifting or rocking of the cope of a flask while it is being withdrawn from the drag.
"With this object in view my invention consists in the novel construction of the two parts of the device namely, the guide section and the pin section, as will be hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a flask showing the improved flask guide and pin applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the guide section on the cope of the flask. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the pin section on the drag of the flask. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the pin and guide sections. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the guide section.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures in which 1 indicates a flask comprising the cope 2 and the drag 3, and 4 indicates the guide and pin device, which comprises the guide section 5 which is secured to the cope by means of screws 6, and the pin section 7 which is secured on the drag by means of screws 8. The guide section 5 comprises (as shown) a plate 9 through which the screws 6 pass, and a projecting flange or plate 10 extending outwardly from the cope at right angles thereto which provides a surface by which the cope is handled or raised off the pin section 7. As will appear from Fig. 6, the projecting plate or flange 10 is provided with a substantially semicircular recess 11 and a rectangular wall 12 within which the adjustable guide 13 lies,

said guide 13 comprising the flat plate portion 14 and the vertical pin engaging portion 15. The fiat plate portion 14 is provided with a tapered slot 16 through which a vertical bolt 17 passes to secure the guide rigidly on the flange or plate 10. The vertical pin engaging portion 15, as shown in Fig. 5, extends a considerable distance above and below the plate 14 so as to provide an adequately long bearing on the pin 26, and the bearing surface of the vertical guide 15 is provided with a large V -shaped recess 19, the sides 20 and 21 of which form substantially an angle of 90 degrees. ()n each side ofthislarge central recess 19 are two smaller V-shaped recesses 22 and :3, the sides 24. of which form an acute angle as shown.
Referring now to the pin section 7 it will be seen that it comprises a fastening plate 24:, from which two lugs extend, and formed on the plate 24 is the pin 26, said pin being provided with a central V shaped tongue or projection 27, the sides 28 of which form an angle of substantially 90 degrees in such manner that it fits snugly within the central recess 19 of the guide 15 as shown in Fig. 4:, and on each side of the central tongue or projection 27 are two small tongues or projections 29, the sides of which form an acute angle to snugly register within the two small recesses 22 and 23 in the guide 15 as shown in Fig. 4. By reason of this construction of tongue 28 and guide 15. six engaging surfaces are provided on both the tongue and guide, and on account of the difference in the angles of said surfaces, all rocking tendency is entirely eliminated when the parts are in po sition shown in Fig. 4E, and to such an extent that the slide (to move at all on the pin) must absolutely follow the pin.
In order to secure an exact fit between the guide and the pin the plate 14 of the guide can be moved in or out, or swing laterally (as shown in Fig. 6) and held rigidly in proper position by the bolt 17 and set screw 30. By this construction an absolute adjustment can be effected.
Having thus fully described the several parts of my invention its operation is perfect-ly evident to those skilled in the art.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A flask-guide and pin comprising a guide section adapted to be secured to the cope of a flask, a pin section adapted to be secured to the drag of a flask, a projecting plate or flange on the guide section, a guide acljustably carried on said plate or flange, the guiding surface of said guide being provided with a large central V-shaped recess, and two smaller V-shaped recesses, the angle formed by the sides of each of said smaller recesses being more acute than that of the larger recess, a pin on said pin section, the guide engaging surface thereof being provided with a large central V-shaped tongue or extension and two smaller V-shaped tongues or extensions, the angle formed by the sides of each smaller V-shaped tongue or projection being more acute than that of the larger tongue or projection, said tongues or projections entering the said recesses in the said guide, substantially as described.
2. A flask guide and pin comprising a guide section and a pin section, a guide adjustably carried on said guide section, the guiding surface of said guide being provided with a plurality of recesses having sides formed on different angles relatively to the guide, a pin on said pin section, the outer surface of said pin being provided with a plurality of tongues or extensions to enter and register with the recesses in the said guide, substantially as described.
3. A device of the character described comprising a guide and a pin, said guide having its guiding surface provided with a plurality of recesses, the said pin having its outer surface provided with a plurality of tongues or projections to enter and register with the said recesses in the said guide.
4. A device of the character described comprising a guide and apin, said guide having its guiding surface provided with a plurality of recesses, the said pin having its outer surface provided with a plurality of tongues or projections to enter and register with the said recesses in the said guide, and means for adjusting the said guide.
5. A device of the character described,
comprising a guide-section for attachment to the cope of a flask, a pin section for attachment to the drag thereof, and means effecting connection between said guide-section and said pin-section, said guide-section being provided with a plurality of V-shaped recesses, the angles of the sides of the lateral recesses being more acute than that of the central recesss, said pin-section being provided with a plurality of V-shaped tongues or extensions, the angles of the sides of the lateral tongues being more acute than that of the central tongue, said tongues being received by said recesses.
6. A device of the character described,
comprising a guide-section for attachment to the cope of a flask, a pin-section for attachment to the drag thereof, and adjustable means of connectionbetween said guide-section and said pin-section, said guide-section being provided with a plurality of \l-shaped recesses, the angles of the sides of the lateral recesses being more acute than that of the central recess, said pin-section being provided with a plurality of \l-shaped tongues or extensions, the angles of the sides of the lateral tongues being more acute than that of the central. tongue, said tongues being received by said recesses.
