Be it known that I, HENRY BnAnsoi-I,l a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful `Bed and Loung'ing Table, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a table adaptable for use by a person while reclining in a bed or on a lounge. The table .is also adaptable for other purposes, as for instance, a musicrack, a sketching table and the like.

An object of the invention is to provide improved, simple means whereby a person reclining in a bed may be supplied with a table that will stand firmly on the .irregular surface of the bedding, `and may also be adjusted to such height as he may desire for various purposes, as for holding a book or paper for reading, or for use as a writing desk, or as a table for writing or for playing games.

A further object is to provide a simple four legged table that can be readily adjusted to stand on irregular ground.

The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective rear view of a bed table embodying this invention. The table top is tilted to expose the parts thereunder. Fig. 2 is an end view of the table standing on an uneven surface. Dotted lines indicate another adjustment of the same. Fig. 3 is a side View of one of the legbrackets detached. Fig. l is a fragmentary section on line indicated by m4, Fig. 2.

1 is a member in the form of a plate constituting a table top. The same may be of any suitable material, as a board, for instance, and of any desired dimensions.

2, 3, 4, 5, designate separate and independently-movable legs arranged in pairs and adjustably connected with the ends of the table top, which in the instance shown, is a board. For the purpose of making such connections, there are secured at the opposite ends thereof, brackets 6, 7, that are duplicates of each other, each being provided with screw-holes 8 for screws 9, by which the brackets are secured to the table top. Each bracket may be provided with two circular seats 10 and 11, in the form of annular beads on the sides of a centrally perforated lug 12, that projects downwardly from the plate 1 when the bracket is secured thereto, and the legs may each be provided with an annular seat 13 to iit upon either of the seats 10 or 11. Each lug is between a pair of legs.

that .is to say a lug is between lthe legs of each pair and each lug is provided with a web 111 centrally perforated at 15 to receive a clamp-rod 16 that passes through perforations 17 in the heads of the legs centrally o1 the annular seats 10, 11, and also through a tubular spacer in the form of a pipe 18 that engages spring' washers 19 which are between the pairs ot legs and engage the inside faces of the inner legs 3 and 5. rIhe rod 16 is provided at one end with a head 2O and at the other end with a thumb-nut 21 to engage spring-washers 22 that engage the outside faces of the outer legs 2, t, so that by loosening the thumb-nut the legs, which are all radially pivoted on the rod 16, may be adjusted and by tightening the nut they may be fixed in the adjusted position. The clamping means for both pairs of legs is thus practically unitary, beingl readily adjustable by one hand so that the other hand is free for the purpose of placing the legs of the .table top plate or member in thc required position. i

In practice the brackets may be formed of aluminum or any other suitable material and the whole appliance may be made light so as to be easily handled by an invalid or convalescent person.

In practical use. a person lying in bed may readily adjust the legs by simply loosening the thumb-nut and then placing the legs where required on the bed clothing to hold the tubular spacer 18 horizontal. Then the nut may be tightened, thus fixing the legs in the desired position. The table will thus be held friction tight but may be adjusted to tilted or level position by applying suiiicientpressure; or in case the thumb-nut has been tightened too much for this, such nut may be slightly loosened and the proper tilt given to the table top and thereupon may again be tightened, thus liXing the table top and legs simultaneously.

The manner of adjusting the device to uneven ground is practically the same as that just described.

The washer 22 may be fitted on a square shank 24 of the clamp rod 16 and may be fixed to the leg 2 by suitable means as a screw 25 so as to prevent the bolt from turning when the thumb-nut is turned.

I claim:

The combination with a plate, of two brackets extending across one side of the plate at the opposite ends thereof and each provided with a centrally perforated lug, each having annular seats on opposite sides thereof, four legs, two for each lug, the legs having annular seats thereon to t the seats. of the lugs and each lug being between two legs and the legs free to revolve on said lugs; a spacer between the innermost legs, spring washers between the ends ofthe spacer and 'the face of th'e innermost legs, friction washers on the outer sides of the outermost legs, a rod having a head on one end and extending through the washers, the legs, the lugs and the spacers, and a thumbscrew on the other end of the rod to hold the parts together.
