Be it known that I, JUDITHA BLACKBURN,
a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skirt-Patterns, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in skirt patterns in which guides, adjustable to the desired size, shape and length of gore, constitute the pattern by which to cut the cloth; and the objects of my invention are: First, to provide a pattern from which skirts of all kinds and all size gores may be cut; second, to itffOl'tl. facilities for adjusting the pattern to waist, hip and length measure; third, to afford facilities for adjusting the pattern for either straight or form-fitting garments, with or without 'tlounced bottoms; fourth, to dispense with a multitudinous array of paper patterns such as is now necessary in cutting skirts of diiferent lengths and different numbers of gores; fifth, to provide a pattern so simple in construction and easy to handle that it may be operated without an undue amount of mathematical calculation. I attain these objects by the mecha nism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top view of the instrument, with parts collapsed; Fig. 2 is a top view of the instrument, with sections extended; Fig. 3 is top view of part of instrument, with sections of the ere shaping side adjusted for use; Fig. lis a longitudinal section of a part of the instrument; and Fig. 5 is a top view of the skirt bottom side of the instrument, showing the possible use of a third slide therein.

J, K and L constitute the skirt-bottom side of the pattern, fastened together by thumbscrews 9 and 10, working in slots 7', 7c and Z.

The skirt-top side lift, the hip-form guide N, the straight side C and the sections of skirt-bottom side J, K and L, are provided with gages showing inches, quarter-inches and half-inches; measurements are all taken from the straight side as place of beginning.
The thumbscrew and slot feature of this instrument provides for adjustment of all parts to any desired length, width or shape of skirt gore.
The pattern is to be made of stable material, such as whalebone, strap-iron, celluloid or brass.
In using this pattern:
1st, adjust the two parts of straight side of pattern so that the top end of section B rests at such number of inches indicated on section C as is desired for length of skirt. (In Fig. 2 of drawing the length of adjustment is inches.)
2nd, adjust upper section G of shaping side of pattern so that the outer edge thereof rests at such number of inches on skirt top side M as shall prove to be the quotient of desired waist measure of skirt divided by desired number of gores. (In Fig. 3 of drawing the top adjustment is to 22-1- inch waist measure, 5-gored skirt.)
3rd, adjust hip guide N upon upper section G of the straight side the same number of inches from top side M as that from belt to point of hip on your model, securing hipguide N parallel with top side M.
4th, adjust outer edge of section F of the,
shaping side of pattern so that it rests at such number of inches on hip-guide N as shall prove to be the quotient of desired hip measure of garment divided by desired number of gores. (In Fig. 3 of drawing the hip adjustment is to 56-inch hip measure, 5- gored skirt.)
5th, adjust shaping side A, H, D, E, F
and G to curves or straight lines as desired.
6th, adjust sections J, K and L of bottom side of pattern so that the total number of,
inches shown on said sections will equal the quotient of desired bottom measure of skirt divided by the number of gores; or, secure said bottom section where lower section A of shaping side may happen to intersect bottom section J after the desired curves have been given to the shaping side of pattern.
The junction of sections H and D at thumbscrew 2 may be curved in on side gores to fit skirt closer under the abdomen and section A may be straight or curved out (as in Fig. 3) to give straight or flounced bottom to the skirt.
I usually cut out two straight gores for front of skirt, with shaping side of pattern perfectly straight (as in Fig. 1), adjusting upper section G as stated above, but adjusting sections F and A to much smaller measurements than given above, afterward subtracting the number of inches thus provided for from total skirt measurements desired and using the remainders for dividends to be divided by number of gores desired less 2 in order to get proper working quotients.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A skirt pattern comprising side bars for the sides of the gore, a top bar adjustably connected at one end to the upper end of one side bar and its other end pivotally connected to the upper end of the other side bar, a bottom bar adjustably connected at one end to the bottom end of one side bar and its other end pivotally connected to the lower end of the other side bar, and an intermediate bar pivotally connected at one end to one side bar and adjustably connected at the other end to the other side bar, each of said side bars being formed of a plurality of sections adjustable longitudinally and angularly with respect to each other, there being a plurality of sections in one of said side bars between the intermediate bar and the top bar each of said sections being adjustable longitudinally and angularly with respect to each other for delineating a curved hip port-ion of the gore.
