BOOK-HOLDER.
Application filed February 17, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL N. Srxnenn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Durham, in the county of Durham and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Book-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to book holding attachments for telephones and is more particularly designed to hold directories and the like, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a holder which can be readily connected to the telephone without the use of clamps or other separate devices.
.z-inother object is to provide a holder of this character designed to support an advertising card or the like.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim. 4
In the accompanying drawings the preferred forms of the invention have been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a wall telephone having the holder attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the holder, portions thereof being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section through the holder, said section being on an enlarged scale. Fig. l is a view similar to Fig. 1 and showing a modified form of holder upon the telephone, Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the holder shown in Fig. 4,
Referring to the figures by characters of reference A. designates the back board of the wall telephone, the same being secured to the wall in the usual manner, as by means of screws (4 extending through the upper corner portions thereof.
One form of directory holder designed to be used in connection with the telephone, consists of a box preferably formed of metal and open at its top, said box being indicated at 1 and the back 2 thereof being extended upwardly above the open top and being provided with an aperture 3 for the reception of a supporting hook or nail which can be used for holding the device at points removed from the telephone. Cleats 4 are formed along the side and bottom edges of the front of the box and form a pocket 5 into which a card may be placed, the said card bearing suitable advertising matter.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. "3, 1911.
Serial No. 544,423.
The upper ends of the side cleats are preferably connected by a cross strip 6 back of which the card can be inserted into engagement with the cleats.
Upper and lower guide sleeves or strips 7 are secured transversely upon the back of the box and mounted within the upper one of these sleeves is a slide 8 having stop projections 9 extending downward from its ends so as to prevent the slide from being withdrawn from its guide sleeve. A diagonally extending slot 10 is formed in each end portion of this strip 8 and extends upwardly and inwardly from the stop projection 9 adjacent thereto.
A strip 11 is slidably mounted within the lower guide sleeve 7 and is provided at its ends with upstanding projections 12 whereby withdrawal of the strip from the sleeve is prevented.
lVhcn it is desired to attach the holder to a telephone, the strip 8 is extended beyond one side of the box and is inserted between the wall and the board A so as to bring the slotted portion of the strip into engagement with the screw (1.. It will be seen therefore that the strip can he slipped onto this screw and will thus hold the box close to the side of the board A. The lower strip 11 can then be forced back of the board A and will, obviously cooperate with the strip 8 so as to hold the box against displacement. "With a box thus located close to and at one side of the telephone, the directory can be placed therein and will always be convenient of access. Moreover if the holder is given to the subscriber for advertising purposes, an advertising card or the like may be located within the pocket 5.
By forming the strips 8 and 11 in the manner described it becomes possible to attach the holder to either side of the telephone.
Instead of using slidable strips for the purpose of engaging the telephone and supporting the box, said box may be provided upon its back with downwardly extending hooks 13 while additional hooks 14k may be arranged at the sides of the back close to the bottom thereof. These hooks are all so proportioned that, by placing the box above the board A, the same can be forced downward so as to bring the hooks 14 into engagement with the side edges of the board while the hooks 13 are brought into engagement with the top edge thereof. The box will then be held as shown in Fig. 4. It is of course to be understood that a single hook 13 may be employed instead of two hooks. In both of the devices shown a pocket is formed in the front face for the reception of an advertising card or the like, but it is to be understood that if preferred such a pocket may be dispensed with, and, if desired, advertising matter may be printed or otherwise displayed upon the front face of the box.
Various changes can of course be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the sp rit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is The combination with the back board of a telephone, of a book receptacle open at the top, a guide secured to and extending transversely of the back of the receptacle, attaching means extending from the back board, a support engaging strip slidably mounted within and projecting beyond the ends of the guide, said strip having integral means at the ends thereof and cooperating with the guide for limiting the movement of the strip, there being inclined slots within the end portions of the strip for the reception of said attaching means, said strip being shiftable beyond either side of the receptacle and cooperating with the attaching means to hold the receptacle against one side of the back board.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
