Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 25, 1910. Serial No. 557,533.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUsT L. HART- TBAUERJ a citizen of the United States, residing at StQLouis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Metallic Sash, of which the following is such-a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a metallic sash 4 and particularly to a sash adapted to be used in connection with metallic rallway cars. It
' may, however, be used in any structure in which it is desirable to use a sash wholly or partly of metal. X
The object of my invention is to provide a metallic sash which will be simple and strong in construction and which will securely hold the glass and at the same time allow the glass to be readily removed and re placed by a new one.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate some forms of sash made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the preferred form of my sash; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. l but showings slight modification; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a still further modification and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the retaining strip.

drepresents the frame of the sash. This frame 5 is composed of two side- pieces 6 and 7 respectively. These side- pieces 6 and 7 are preferably formed of separate sheets or metal, as shown in the drawings.
8 is a channel-shaped strip of metal which is pla'ced'between the sheets 6 and 7 at their lower or outer edge. This channel-shaped member 8 forms a strut to space the sheets'6 and 7 and at the same time closes the edge of the sash. The member 8 is tightly secured in position by means of rivets 9 or in any other suitable way. The side-piece 6 is provided at its upper or inner edge with a horizontally extending flange 10. This flange 10 is provided with a head 11 having a vertical wall 12. This vertical wall 12 together with the flange 10 forms a seat for the glass 13. In place of having the glass'13 contact directly with the seat I prefer to cover its edge with a U-shaped strip of rubber 14 so as to protect the glass andform a water-tight 10 a my 16. This' way 16 is adapted to repeive the curved spring strip 17 of a retainmg member. The retaining member in addition to the curved spring strip 17 has a clamping strip 18 which is joined to the springs 17 at an acute'angle and has a turned-over edge 19 adapted to cooperate with the seat to hold the glass 13. The flange-10 of the side-piece 6 has a curved extension 20 which acts as locking means for the spring strip ITof the retaining member. It will be evident that the glass 13 may be secured in position by forcing the curved (spring strip in the way 16. While the 1 curved extension 20 of the flangelO serves to securely lockthe retaining member against accidental displacement it allows the memher to be readily removed by means ofa suitable tool. The inner part of the flange 10 is spaced by means of struts 21 secured in position. by means of screws 22 or in any other suitable manner. In order to allow the retaining member to conform to any slight irregularities in the glass 13 the curved spring strip 17. of said member is divided at ip italile intervals by notches 23, as shown in In Fig. 2 I have shown a slight modification in which the curved extension 20 of the flange 10 is omitted and the flange 15 is also omitted from the side-piece 7. In this construction a channel-bar 24 is used to separate the sheets 6 and 7 at their inner edges and the way 16 for the spring strip 17 of the retaining member is formed between this channel-bar 24 and the flange 10 of the sheet 6. The upper edge of the sheet 7 is allowed to project slightly beyond the channel-bar 24 as shown at 25 and this projecting portion forms a locking shoulder for the retain ing strip.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a stillfurther modification in which the flange 10 is provided with a downwardly projecting por tion 26 forming a vertical wall adapted to coiiperate with a retaining member 27 of different form from the retaining member in the previously described structure. In this structure the side sheet 7 is provided with a short inwardly projecting flange 28 preferably substantially flush with the flange 10 of the-side sheet 6. This flange 28 coiiperates with a groove 29 in the retaining member 27. This retaining member 27 is insertcdfin position vertically in place of horizontally. A thin strip of metal is preferably placed between the retaining member 27 and the flange 26 and glass 13.
The manner of using the structureshown in Figs. 2 and 3 will be apparent with the description given in connection with Fig. 1. While these forms embody some of the features of my invention, I prefer to use the form shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
I Having fully described my invention, what'I claim as-new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a metallic sash, the combination with a frame provided at its inner edge with a seat for the glass, of a strut arranged adjacent to said seat and spac ng the sides of said frame, and a. retaining member yieldingly engaging with said frame and cooperating with said seat to hold the glass.
2. In ametallic sash, the combination with a frame formed of two separate side pieces,.one of said side pieces being pro vided at its inner edge with a seat for the glass, a strut at theinner edge of said frame spaciiig the side pieces, a second strut at the outer edge of the frame forspacing the side pieces and closing the outer edge, and a retaining member yieldingly engaging with said frame and cooperating with said seat to hold the glass.
3. In a metallic sash, the combination with a frame provided at its inner ed gewitli a seat for the glass, said frame being providedovitli away extending beneath said seat, of a retaining member comprising a spring, strip and a clamping strip, said strips being rigidly connected at one edge, the free edge of'said spring strip entering said way beneath said seat, and the free edge of said clamping strip cooperating with said seat to hold the glass.
e. In a metallic sash, the combination with a gframe provided at its inner edge with a seat for the glass, said frame being provided. with a way extending beneath said seat, of aretaining member comprising a spring strip and a clamping strip, said strips being rigidly connected at one edge, the free edge'of said spring strip entering said way beneath. said seat, and the free edge of said clamping strip cooperating with said seat to hold the glass, said frame being provided with locking means for said retainingmember.
5. In a metallic sash, the combination with a frame provided at-its inner edge with a seat for the glass, said frame being provided with a way extending beneath said seat, of a retaining member comprising a curved spring strip and a clamping strip arranged at an angle to said spring strip, said strips being rigidly connected at one edge,
. the free edge of said curved spring strip entering said way beneath the seat, and the free edge of said clamping strip cooperating with said seat to hold the glass. J
6. In a metallic sash, the combination witha frame provided at its inner edgewith a seat for the glass formed integral with one side of the frame, of a flange formed integral with the other side of the frame and arranged adjacent to said seat and forming therewith a way extending substantially at right angles to the plane of the sash, and a retaining member comprising a spring strip adapted to enter said way and a clamping strip cooperating with said seat to hold the glass.
7. In a metallic sash, the combination with a frame provided at its inner edge with a seat for the glass formed integral with one side of the frame, of a flange formed integral with the other side of said frame and arranged adjacent to said seat and forming therewith a way, and a retaining member comprismg a spring strip adapted to enter said way and a clamping strip coiiperating with said seat to hold the glass, the base of said seat having a curved extension forming locking means for the retaining member.
8. In a metallic sash, the combination with a frame provided at its inneredge with a seat for the glass, said frame being provided with a way extending beneath said seat, of 1 a retaining .member comprising. a curved spring strip adapted to enter said way and a clamping strip arranged at an acute angle a seat for the glass, said frame being provided with a way extending beneath --said seat, of a retaining member comprising a spring strip adapted to enter said way and a clamping strip arranged at an acute angle to said spring strip and cooperating with said seat to hold the glass, said spring strip bein divided to allow it to compensate for the irregularities of the glass.
