CHARLES J. ASOLI, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN.
PANE-FASTENER.
My invention pertains to new and useful improvements m means for securingpanes of glass or the like in conventional types of window or other sashes.
The primary object of the present invention is to improve upon the present forms of securing means now in use, such as is illustrated in my Patent No. 1,217,356, granted Feb. 27, 1917. In carrying out this pro-y vision is made for a combined covering and retaining strip for the glass receiving groove of the lower sash rail, thereby not only holding the glass in position but also protecting said lower rail against the usual rotting action set up by water settling in Said groove.
Vith these general objects in view the invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and claimed and shown in the drawing wherein- Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse sectional view through a window sash and frame, the former being in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the frame with the sash in open position, the same being shown in elevation.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein similar referencel characters designate like parts in both of the views, 1 indicates a window frame of conventional design in which a window sash 2 is hinged along one vertical edge as shown at 3. The sash 2 consists of a frame of usual shape, the opening of which is normally covered by a pane of glass 4 the inner edges of the top, bottom, and side rails of the Sash being rabbeted as is customary, the rabbet in the bottom rail 5 providing a Shoulder 6. Y
The top and side portions of the pane 4 are Secured in the rabbets of the adjacent parts of the sash by means of beading 7, whereas the bottom portion thereof is retained by m improved metallic protecting member 8. his member is of a length sufcient to extend between the side rail of the Application led August 8, 1919.y Serial No. 316,150.
sash and is provided with a channel 9 receiving the edge portion of the pane 4, the
f inner iange 10 thereof beingseated against said shoulder 6. The outer flange 11 is of double thickness and has sufficient spring to compensate for the movement of the pane 4 due to'expansion and contraction, etc.
The retaining member is preferably formed of relatively light gage sheet metal which can be readily stamped into shape. The inner iiange 10 of the channel of the member has a protective strip 12-extended laterally from its free edge to overlie the portionA of the lower sash rail inwardly of said shoulder 6. Inasmuch as this portion of the rail is slightly downwardly and inwardly inclined as shown in Fig. 1, the protective strip assumes a similar inclination.
The top surfacel of the lower sash rail 5 outwardly of the shoulder 6 being lower than that part of the rail covered by the strip 12, the outer protective Strip 13 eX- tends laterally from the flange 11 substantially in the plane of the base of the channel 9, and is slightly downwardly inclined to provide a water shed. As clearly shown in Fig. 1 the strip 13 is readily formed as a continuation of the flange 11 by bending the portion of the member 8 adjacent the channel 9 upon itself, thereby forming the double thickness flange 11V as above men tioned.
Possibility of water creeping beneath the protective strip is obviated vby a hook-like tongue 14 which is formed on the free edge of said strip 13 and depends therefrom. One portion of the tongue is extended inwardly and substantially parallel to the Strip 13, and is seated in a groove cut in the outer side of the lower sash rail 5. The outer corner of the lower rail is thereby fully protected against any possibility of moisture reaching the same.
In assembling the pane of glass 4 in a sash having one of my improved retaining members 8 on its lower rail, the lower edge of said pane is'seated in the channel 9 of the member and then the side and top edge portions of the pane are brought into en-v gagement with the shoulders formed on the other rails. After the strips of beading 7 have been secured in place the pane will be securely held in the sash. It will be noted that said shoulders on the top and side rails of the sash 2 are faced inwardly, whereas Specification of Letters Patent. l Patented July 26,1921. I
the shoulderv 6 lfaces outwardly. Thus the first mentioned shoulders prevent water from leaking around theedges of the pane,V
whereas the retaining member 8 sheds any water which may tend to accumulate-,ioni'the lower sash rail 5. However, if it is considered necessary orv advisable, thecombined retaining and protective member 8 may be placed around all of the edges ofthe paneand disposed in engagement with the side and top rails of the sash.
From the fore oing description takenin.
.. cident to replacin panes in the ordinary window-frames. seen, is obtained' by having the shoulders at the sides and Vtop ofv the: frame, against which the pane seats, faced :inward1y5 the his advantage, it will be retaining beading Stripev 7 being positioned interiorly of the frame. r I claim: v-
The combination of a frame having certain ofjits rails rabbeted to form shoulders facing in one direction and another of its railerabbeted to form a shoulderV facing in the opposite direction, said last named rail having a: covering strip of sheet metal cornprising a channel portion seated in said rabbet, the metall at onewed'gc of the4 channel being-extended to cover the shoulder formed by'sa'id` rabbet, the metalf at the otheredge of' the chan-nel being bent upon itself to form a wall o'f'double thickness for that side of the channel; andfbein'g'-bentoutwardly-atthebaseV of the, wall', and a; lipon the outer edge ofi saidl strip eXtending-i-nto'the side of saidV rail. Y In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto; Set my hand at Milwaukee-5 in the countyjofMilwaukee Vand State of Wis-r consin. y
