Description

SVEN G. BOLIN, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
METAL DOOR.
Moises.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patent-ed July 285, 1914.
Application filed February G, 1913. Serial No. 7%,466
lle it known that l. SVEN (l. lloran', a subject of Sweden,l residing al Kansas Cit):` in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal lloors: and l do declare the following to be a full. clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the aeconnianying drawings, and to the letters and iig'ures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
iily invention relates to metal doors, and
has for its principal object to provide a ,door of that type comprising' a removable companying' drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of a metal door constructed according to my invention, a portion being removed to illustrate the inner structure. Filo'. Il is a vertical sectional View of a portion of the door. taken on the line ll-ll, Fig. Fig. lll is a detail view of the beading key. .lV a sectional view of one of the vertical side members before the key is in place. ig. Vis a similar view showing the key in position. Fig. Vl is a detail View showing1 the method of finishing the bottom of the door.
Referring more in detail to the parts: l designates the stiles, 2 the end rails, and 3 the center rail of a metal door embodying my improvements, each of the stiles and rails being provided with ornamental edges or molding 4 in order to enhance the appearance of the door and provide thickness for the accommodation of the key parts hereinafter dese 1ibeil.
5 designates a panel which is located between the end and center rails "l, il, and, as it is usually made of the same material as the body of the door, neednot` he adapted for removal, although it may be attached to the rails and stiles by the keys used for mountingY the upper panel, if so desired. ln order. however, to make the eonstruction of all of the Stiles and rails uniform, l prefer to equip each ith the interlocking; beading` cmistructed according` to my invenl tion. in making' Stiles and rails of this type. each part has mating beads, each of which comprises an inturned panel face 7 having' a back turned shoulder S and a lip il parallel with the panel face, the inturned parts being' bent back to form a diverging mouth within the stile` or rail, as illustrated most clearly in Fig. IV.
ln installing^ the lower panel the panel ma;Y be projepted between the inturned parts of the lips of some of the rails and Stiles before the other parts are applied, as it is not necessary to provide for removing said lower panel. lVith the panel in place akey l0 is moved over the shoulders and lips of the inturned panel faces of the molding to draw same together and lirmly against the panel, the key preferably comprising a rail ll which is adapted to seat on the shoulders tl and form a base against which the edge of the panel may abut., thearms 12, which ovmlie. he ends of the lips 9 and tongues 13 which project over the shoulders and hold the key to tlie'panel parts. Y
lp order to provide for the installation :tithe upper panel. after the ails and stiles have been completely assembled, and for re placement of said panel after the door has been fn use, l provic the upper Y slot the material at the edges i if is turned down to form shelf l n i porting an inlay cap 16 which may be screwed to the shelf after the panel nas been positioned, in order to completely Close the rail. lVith this construction, keys may be applied to the middle and side rails before the panel is inserted. lWith the bottoni and side keys in place, the panel may be proychanneled member 22 which is welded or otherwise secured to the Sides thereof and provided with inturned edges 23 for receivying a finishing strip 24:.
In order to deaden the metallic sound, prevalent in doors of this type, I prefer to place strips of cork composition 25, or other similar substance, between the sides of the stiles and cross rails.
It is apparent that with this construction thedoor may be completely assembled, except for the upper panel, and that. the panel may be set after the door has been erected in a building, thereby enabling such panels to be painted with the name of an occupant of an oliice before it is installed in a door and it is also possible to replace a glass panel without removing the beading or separating the stiles from the rails.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is z- 1. In a metal door, a rail having edge portions turned backwardly into the interior of the rail to form spaced panel faces, each provided with a laterally turned shoulder and A inturned lip, a key having a rail portion seated against said shoulders between the lips, and having edge arms and tongues overlying the shoulders and lips, whereby the panel face portions of the rail are held in spaced relation and the key held to the inturned portions of the door rail.
2. In a metal door, a rail comprising panel beads, having inturned edges forming panel faces and having laterally turned shoulders and inturned lips at the inner edges of the panel faces, a panel having an edge portion located between said faces,l and a key slidably mounted on the shoulders and lips to clamp the panel faces of the door rail against said panel and form a seat therefor.
3. In a metal door, a rail comprising .spaced beading members having mating bearing faces yieldingly tensioned oppositely and each provided with a laterally directed shoulder and offset lip, of a key having a base adapted to seat on said shoulder between the lips, and arms for inclosing the shouldered parts and holding same in locking position and against said seat. substantially as set forth.
4. In a metal door, a stile and rail construction comprising a single piece of sheet metal of substantially U-shaped cross section, having free ends beaded and turned inwardly to form a longitudinal slot, and creased to provide laterally directed shoulders and inturned lips, and a sliding key having a bead for holding said lips and shoulders in alinement and having arms for holding said lips and shoulders to said bead.
5. A metal door comprising stiles and rails, one of which is provided with a slot and with spaced beading members, another of said parts with an opening arranged at right angles to the slot, a panel adapted for projection through the slot and between the beading members to its position in said door, and a key adapted for projection through said opening and over the spaced beading members to clamp the latter against the panel, for the purpose set forth.
6. A metal door comprising stiles and rails, one of which is provided with a slot and with spaced beading members and another of said parts with an opening arranged at right angles to a slot, a panel adapted. for projection through the slot and between the beading members to its position in said door, a key adapted for projection through said opening and over the spaced beading members to clamp the latter against the panel, and caps adapted for closing the slot and key openings.
.7. A metal door comprising stiles and rails, one of which is provided with a slot and with spaced beading members, another of said parts with an opening arranged at right angles to the slot, a panel adapted for projection through the slot and between the beading members to its position in said door, a key adapted for projection through said opening and over the spaced beading members to clamp the latter against the panel,
flanges surrounding said slot and key openings, and caps'adaptedl for seating on said iianges and for attachment to the door parts to cover said openings.
In testimony' whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
