To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROSWELL A. NIooRn, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment- Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

My invention relates to an improvement in garment-supporters, the object being to produce a simple, compact and convenient supporter constructed with particular refer ence to providing for covering its entire back with webbing so as to make the buckles rustless.

With these ends in View my invention consists in a garment-supporter having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In carrying out my invention as herein shown, the inner jaw 2 of the supporter is formed near its lower end with a transverse webbing-opening 3 through which the end a of the webbing is passed from front to rear, the webbing then being carried down over the front face of the lower end of the said jaw to form, as it were, a pad 5 coacting with arubber pad 6 secured to the inner face of the lower end of the outer jaw 7 which is formed about midway of its length with a transverse semi-circular bend 8 receiving the pressure arm 9 of an operating-lever 10 having trunnions 11 entering holes 12 formed in two ears 13 turned forward at a right angle from the opposite edges of the inner jaw 2 with which the outer jaw 7 is formed integral, the two aws being oined at their upper end by a band 14 forming a spring tending to normally separate the jaws except as they are crowded together by the action of the said lever 10.

' 'Towa'rd its upper end the rear jaw 2 is clasped by a pair of horizontal fingers 15 turned inward from the lower end of a suspension-plate l6 virtually forming an extension of the upper ends of the two jaws, the said plate having a webbing-opening 17 entered along its lower edge by teeth 18 and also having a pair of fingers 19 located below the said opening 17 and about midway of its length and adapted to be turned in ward over its front face.

The fixed end 1 of the webbing having been passed downward over the front face of the lower end of the inner jaw 2 of the supporter, is then passed rearward and up over the back of the fixed jaw 2 and back of the suspension-plate 1G and drawn taut to form the length of webbin 20 which protects the metal exposed at the back of the supporter against the moisture of the body and prevents the metal from rusting. The length 20 of the webbing also prevents any contact of the metal with the bare skin. The webbing is then passed from rear to front through the opening 17 in the upper end of the suspension-plate 16 and looped over the fingers 19 thereof as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the said fingers being closed down upon the webbing to hold it firmly in place. In this way a loop 21 is formed in front of the plate 16. The webbing is then passed from front to rear through the opening 17 and then up back of the horizontal bar 22 forming the upper edge'of the opening 17 and constituting the extreme upper end of the plate 16, the covering of the back of the bar 22 completing the covering of all of the metal exposed at the back of the supporter. After the webbing 20 has been passed from rear to front through the opening 17, it is stretched sufiiciently to cause it to lie flat upon or hug the back of the inner jaw 2 after which it is pressed down upon the teeth 18 which hold it taut preparatory to its being clasped and held by the fingers 19.

By constructing the suspension plate 16 as described, I am enabled to provide for covering the entire back of the garmentsupporter with webbing.

I claim:

In a garment-supporter, the combination with an inner jaw formed at its lower end with a webbing-opening adapting it to have its back covered with webbing, of an outer jaw, an operating-lever pivotally mounted ing a loop formed in the Webbing passed 10 through the said opening.
