JOHN R. HUNTER,

SAFETY-STIRRUP.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOHN R. HUNTER, a citizen of the llnitcd States of America, residing at Kennett, in the county of Shasta and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Stirrups of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawil'ig.
This invention relates to safety stirrups, and the principal object of the same is to provide a novel type of foot-receiving portion which may be readily released from the supporting body so that the foot of the rider will. be entirely freed.
In carrying out the objects of the inven tion generally stated above it will be understood, of tours I that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preterreal and practical embodimentof which shown in the accompanying drawings. wherein:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved stirrup. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail view of the foot-receiving portion when in a disengaged position. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of. the base plate of the stirrup. Fig. i is a detail perspective view of the supporting body of the stirrup. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the body showing the manner of detachably fastening the side members thereto. Fig. (3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line G-6, Fig. 1. Figv 7 is a similar view taken on the line T--T Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a. fragmentary inverted detail perspective view of one of the base members of the sides of the stirrup.
Referring to said a ccompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that the improved stirrup comprises a supporting body 1 the upper surface of which provided with a headed pin or bolt 2 to which the loop 3 that connects with the stirrup strap t is swiveled. Said body is hollow and provided with a central partition 5 that divides the interior into two compartments 6-7. The compartments are open at both ends, and each is provided with an inclined bottom 8 that extends from one end of the compartment and terminates in a shoulder S) that is adjacent the other end of the compartmcnt. The inclined bottoms and shoulders of the two compartments extend in 0p- Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed June 4, 1910.

posite directions and provide latch keepers for the side members of the stirrup as will be explained.
The side members 10 of the stirrup at their upper ends are provided with an abntment plate 11 from which. a latch. 12 projects laterally. Said latches are provided with a substantially V-shaped notch 13 on their under surfaces and are adapted to enter the compartments U-T and have their notches engaged. over the shoulders 9, as shown in Fig. 5. The lower end of each side member is provided with aninwardly projecting foot-rest section 1% which is provided with oppositely disposed pendent side ears 16 and at its free end is provided at each side with pendent lugs 17 having rounded ends 18.
A. base plate 19 has pivot. openings 20 formed transversely through its ends and at its intermediate portion is provided with a pair of side recesses 21. Said plate has its ends titted between the ears 16 of the footrest sections 1% of the side members, and is hinged thereto by the pivot bolts The side lugs 17 at the free ends of the sections 14 enter the recesses 21 and the rounded ends 18 of said lugs, snap beneath the bot-- tom edge of said recesses.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the latches of the side members enter the supporting body from opposite portions and are rigidly held therein by the weight of the riders foot upon the foot-rest sections. It will also be. seen that when the weight of the foot is removed from the foot-rest sections, the side members may be readily disengaged by pushing outward thereon which away from the support so that they will be entirely freed therefrom. It will be apparent therefore, that with the stirrup in the normal position and the foot of the rider upon the foot-rest, the stirrup will perform its usual functions, but in the event of the rider being thrown. the side members will be readily released from the support by contact of the foot therewith so that the entire foot-receiving portion. of the stirrup will be released from the support.
lVhat I claim as my invention is 1. A. stirrup comprising a. body provided with compartments, said compartments pro vided with shonlders, sidc members provided with latches for detachable engagement with said shoulders, said members provided with foot-rest sections, and a base plate pivotally connecting said sections.
2. A stirrup comprising a supporting body provided with latch-receiving compartments, side members provided with inwardly projecting latches adapted for detachable engagementwith said compartments, a foot-rest section projecting inwardly from each side member, and a base plate having its ends pivotally connected to said sections and its intermediate portion detachably engaged with the ends of said sect-ions.
3. A stirrup comprising a body, side members having their upper ends detachably engaged with opposite portions thereof, an inwardly projecting "toot-rest section carried by each side member said sections provided with side lugs at their free ends and hinge ears adjacent their intermediate port-ion, and a base plate having its ends hinged to said ears and its intermediate portion provided with slde recesses for the reception 5 of said lugs.
4-. A stirrup comprising a body provided with latch receiving means, side members provided with latches for engaging said latch-receiving means, a foot rest section carried by each side member, and a base plate having its ends hinged to the intermediate portions of said sections, and its intermediate portion detachably engaged by the free ends of said sections.
