N. Y. ASS IGNOE TO-THE ENGLANDER SPRING- BED COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
, SIDE GUARD FOR SPRING-MATTRESSES.
To all whom tt may concern: .laBe it known that 1, AUGUST J. KREUZ- 1111MB, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York,
borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Guards for Spring- Mattresses, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to metallic mattresses, and more particularly to an improved side guard therefor, the object of the invention being to provide a. side guard formed of cables or longitudinally extending wires so located that thestufied mattress will be prevented over the edge of the fron spreading or rolling mattress bottom,-whereby the mattress' will be maintained in'its' proper shape and a neat and tidy appear ance thereof presented at all times.
In thedrawingsaccompanying and form- .Zin-g part of this specification, Figure 1 is a wperspective view of one eshiowing this improved metallic mattress in position thereon; Fig. 2 l's'a perspective view end of a bedstead,
' 201E oneportion of such 'nattress, showing a .'somewhat difierentfortn of connecting the cables, atthe. 'ends thereof;
and Figs. 3, 4:
and 5 .are,;perspectiveyiews illustratmg dif: fterent means'iof connect ng and bracing the -cables together. 1
-:Si1'nllaI characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures of the drawings.
' .The ,spring, or -1Il8tflll10 mattress frame usually comprises a'pair of side bars 2 and 3 7 each having at each .end thereof a bracket 4,
the brackets at one. end of'the frame supporting a cross bar or transverse member 5 provided with upstanding projections 6,, one
adjacent to each end of such bar. The mattress-bottom 7 which may be made of any suitable, form but shown in the present in stance as made up of longitudinal and transversely extending wires or links 8 and 9 respectively, is stretched between the transshown connected with such transverse bars byhelicalsprings'lt).
Each side guard in the present instance verse bars and in the present instance is comprises a plurality oi cables or wires 11 extending'lengthwise of thebed'bottom at the side edge thereof and stretched between the upstanding projections ofthe transverse bars, being connected thereto either directly shown in Figs.
between the cables.

by means of. coiled or'helical springs 12as shown in Figs. 1, 3and 4, each cable being connected to a coiled spring which is in turn attached to an upstanding. projection- For tying the several cables together varione means may be used.- In the form shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5 the cables are ti d to gether at intervals by. wires 13 .which' are also connected or tied to the bed bottom as shown in Fig. 2, or, as may be preferred,
fabric, one-' yti'r'e being-preferably located ad-I Iii-the form shown in Figs. 3 and at the cables are connected by diagonally located connecting wires or members'l3', while in Fig. .3 thes'ediagonally located wires are supplemented by the form cit-connection 1, 2 and 5. These wires not only tie the cables together and enable them to 'act as a; unitary structure, but they also reinforce the side guards and materially strengthen the same, and'also prevent the stufied mattress from protruding through I claim as my invention:
1. A spring mattress comprising a bottom stretched under tension, projections car ried by the bottom, one adjacent. to each corner thereof, and side guards, one at each side of the bottom, and stretched under tension between said projections and comprisof lengthwise extending members spaced apart throughout their lengths and connected at intervals throughout their lengths whereby such side guard members will move in unison.
Aspring mattress comprising. a bottom stretched under tension, projections carried by the bottom, one adjacent to each .corner thereof, and side guards, one at'eaclr side of the bottom, and stretched under tension between said projections and comprising aplurality of lengthwise extending members spaced apart throughout their lengths and connected at intervalsthrough out their lengths whereby such side guard members will movekin unison, each side guard being also connected l at: intervals throughout its jlen'gth wit the bottom whereby an opening-' the, mattress between the lower edge of the side guard, and the bottom is avoided.
3. A.spring. mattress comprising a bottom stretched under tension, projections carransverse outerwire of the for" the protrusion of thereof, means connecting the cables with 'r'ied'by the bottom, one adjacent to each corner tl1'ereof,"'and side. guards, oneat each side of the bottom, and stretched under t ension between said projections and compris ing a plurality of lengthwise extending members spaced apart throughout their lengths andconnected at intervals through- "out their lengths whereby such side guard members will move in unison, each side guard being also connected at intervals throughout its length with the bottom whereby an opening for, the protrusion of i the mattress between the. lower edge of the side guard andthe bottom is avoided, and helical springs, one "or more for each length same under constant lengthwise tension and .for automatically taking up the slack thereof.
4. A spring'mattress comprising v a bottom stretched.under.tension, projections carried thereby, one adjacent to each corner thereof, side guards, one at each side of the bottom; and comprising a series of cables extending lengthwise of the bottom and spaced apart throughout the lengths of such cables, vhelical springs for the cables and connecting'the ends thereof with the projections, one or more for each cable, for imparting constant lengthwise tension to the cables and automatically-taking up the slack one another at frequent intervals throughout theirlengths whereby they will move in unison with one another, each such side guard also having connection with the bottom at frequent intervals throughout its wise extending'mern'ber, for maintaining the" length whereby'an opening fort-he pr'otru-.
